This is one of the more mediocre restaurants you'll find on Rt. 7 north of Great Barrington's town center. Although some items on the menu are fine, it's very inconsistent, service is weak, and food often poorly prepared (ie, soggy tempura because it was not fried in hot enough oil). It seems to have a steady clientele, but for anyone who really enjoys Japanese food, this place just isn't going to cut the mustard. Too bad, a really good Japanese restaurant would be a good addition to this area.

The Bookstore is a comfortable place to browse and find a great selection of books. Like many independent bookstores, it has its strengths and weaknesses (I'd say the strengths include fiction, philosophy, local authors, and books about the Berkshires), but the selection is really wonderful. Best of all is the knowledgeable and dedicated staff, who will go out of their way to help you find what you need. If they don't have it, they'll order it.

There are endless debates about NY's best pizza (I personally give my vote to DiFara), but Grimaldi's is definitely in my top five. It's a very tasty pie, expertly made. They use top quality ingredients so this is a place where I like to order my pie topped with a few different things. My only complaint is that sometimes the center of the pie is a bit soggy - they aren't 100% consistent on this. Nevertheless, it's always a great tasting pie and I'll always go back. There's often a wait to get in, so go off hours if you don't like to stand in lines.

Maria's Mexican Bistro is just a block away from the Fifth Avenue restaurant scene in Park Slope, and it's a nice surprise to find. It's a small, charming restaurant that serves both traditional and more creative Mexican food. They have a big tequila meni as well as a full bar. Except for the tiny tables and cramped seating, this is a very enjoyable place. The food is reliably good, the prices moderate, and the service friendly. It seems like a date place - more couples than families when I've gone. Definitely one of the better choices for real Mexican food in Park Slope.

Dr. Azrak shares a crowded suite of offices with Dr. King, a popular orthodontist. Dr. Azrak and his staff take care of the general dentistry in the office. He's very good, but has an intense personality which may be off putting to his younger clientele. He has a couple of great ladies that assist with teeth cleanings - I'd go to this office for them along. Dr. Azrak is thorough, serious, and professional, but really young patients may also require a more child-friendly approach if they are to willingly go to the dentist.

Freebird seems to be much appreciated in the Red Hook neighborhood - a used bookstore with a mellow vibe where locals can browse and read in comfy chairs. They have a fairly good selection in varied categories, plus some first editions by local authors. Freebird also occasionally hosts special evenings for readings by local authors. Red Hook is being increasingly populated by artists and young, creative professionals, and the store seems to connect with their interests. If you love used book stores, it's definitely worth the trek.

Lulu's has been a mainstay on Park Slope's Fifth Avenue - a well stocked small toy store and salon for kids' haircuts. It was always a crowded, small store, but they've just moved a few blocks away to much more spacious digs on Fifth around Bergen. I have not yet visited this store but expect a really nice selection of toys and probably more space for haircuts. They tend to feature more educational toys, funkier and creative items, rather than the stuff they stock at ToysRUs. Nevertheless, it's not the kind of stuff that parents love but kids quickly forget about; they seem to be able to find toys that please everyone. A great place to pick up gifts for birthday parties too.

Whoever thought buttons could be so interesting? This incredibly stocked store is a treasure trove of every kind of button imaginable - lots of beautifully crafted buttons here, the best kind of its store for a seamstress looking to make a one of a kind garment. It's also a great place to find buttons in order to update the look on a jacket. If you don't know a lot about their products the help can be kind of snooty, which is off-putting. But ignore that and this is a great store, the kind that makes New York so special

Baked is a small bakery specializing in cakes on Red Hook's commercial strip. It may be out of the way for most Brooklynites, but it's worth the trip, especially since it is pretty easy to park in this neighborhood. They make fabulous cakes using the best high quality ingredients - expensive but totally worth it. You can custom order birthday or other cakes, or buy slices at the store. They have a small seating area, but their specialty is custom order cakes.

My teen daughter wanted to check this place out based on recommendations from friends. It is your typical Brooklyn teen store crammed with inexpensive jeans and sportswear. What I liked about the place were the decent prices and pretty good selection - while the clothes will appeal to young teens, the fashions do not all look like it's disco time. They have jeans under $20, tops under $10, and a lot of black parkas. Not necessarily my choice, but if your kid won't shop at Old Navy and the department stores are too expensive, this is one decent option. Also, friendly service.
