Doorman detracts from a good time...who needs it? 3/4/2011

I'll tell you where the negative comes from: the bouncer/doorman. Intentionally drops the door on people coming and going, and still as rude and nasty as ever..a totally unnecessary attitude for a neighborhood place like this. Tonight they had to call the NYPD to remove an aging patron who had a bit much to drink...Mr. Big Shot doorman couldn't handle the gentleman on his own. (The patron had calmed down by the time the cops arrived.) Mr. Big Shot doorman is incapable of talking to people like a human being, and once he's dumped the atmosphere here will improve 100%. Last time I was in Ty's this same doorman was horiffically abusive to a guy on crutches because he didn't buy a drink fast enough and was waiting for his friend. Fortunately, the friend showed up and diffused that unnecessary conflict. Memo to Ty's: DUMP THIS UNPLEASANT GOATEED FOOL. more

Ty's Rocks 1/25/2010

They treated us Boston trannys like we were royalty! The bouncer, a former opera singer, is a big, sober sweetheart. Pros: Friendliest daddy bar in town. more

Don't get the negitive 11/9/2009

I don't know where all these negative points of view are coming from. When I make it there on occasion I still am treated well by the staff. I always end up having a decent conversation with someone and the drink prices are not outrageous to me. Still Kickin Still a Good Time.... Pros: Still a Good Time more

Ty's ""attitude free""? LOL. 7/21/2008

Have never experienced so much attitude in my life as from the clueless, rude doorman, and the crowd inside is sketchy. Lots of sloppy drunks and broken down messes. FAIL. more

RARE FIND - Attitude free bar in NYC 7/14/2008

If you're an out-of-towner this place is a great starting point . Pros: Nice staff , Friendly Crowd , No Attitude Cons: No bag check more

Forget about it... 7/7/2008

Wow, this place used to be so friendly, but I have had nothin but terible experiences here recently. The crowd and the staff were nasty to me and my friends, their prices are ridiculous ($5.75 for a beer? I love carrying change around at a bar!). Ugh, and it used to be so fun there. Oh well. more

What happened to this place? 6/17/2008

Ty's used to be a lot of fun, but the place has really gone down hill. It used to be a relaxed, attitude-free place, and now the place acts as if it's Studio 54 circa 1982. Since when was there an exclusive, bouncer-controlled ""door policy"" at a small hole-in-the-wall? I can't exactly put my finger on why the crowd has been so unpleasant lately, but me and my friends have really tried to give the place the benefit of the doubt and our patience has run out. And we were the last remaining people we knew under 50 who still gave Ty's a shot! Pros: Location Cons: Everything else more

TY's is a great for BEARS !! 6/1/2008

I was there last year for the pride march, and will be there again 06/29/2008 The guys there are 40+ so if your looking for younger guys this is not the bar for you. The beer is a little high for this place. Pros: Hot Bears Cons: Beer was $6.00 and yes Bathroom is small. more

Way to go Bear! 4/22/2008

We've been in there a few times and have witnessed random rude behavior from some of the staff/Mgt to certain ""types"" of customers. Good for you for publicly calling them out, maybe this will be a wakeup call for them. more

Horrible time. 11/26/2007

Ended up going to Ty's. Crowd was to out of touch for my taste. No1 was really talking to anyone, drinks were over priced for a place like this not to mention the bathroom was smaller than a broom closet. I would never ever under any circumstances go back to this bar for any reason. Pros: I didn't find a single Pro. Cons: Pretty much 99.9% of the people there. more

Terrific Old-Fashioned Bar 5/30/2007

Ty's just keeps rolling along. Year after year, this ideally located spot on Christopher Street -- just west of 7th Avenue -- remains true to itself: A Gay bar without any need to change with the times. No trendy updating of decor, etc., here, just a friendly bar. The age range is wide and the crowd is equally diverse. Bartenders are warm and welcoming. Check it out! Pros: Diverse crowd, warmly welcoming, a real bar more

LONG LIVE TY'S 3/14/2007

These days, very little in New York lasts more than a couple of years but Ty's goes on and on. It's a very different Christopher Street from the gay boulevard that existed when the bar opened, yet it's still fun to sit in the big windows and watch the passing crowd. The bartenders are great and friendly, especially the very popular energetic dynamo known as Gary. Go three times and by the fourth, he'll greet you by name. The patrons are friendly and varied and lots of tourists pour in all year long. You'd be welcome here if you're twenty two or seventy two. It is both friendly and cruisy. May it stay in place forever! Pros: GREAT BARTENDERS FRIENDLY CROWD OF REGULARS AND VISITORS Cons: WHEN CROWDED IT CAN BE CLAUSTROPHOBIC more

Friendly Crowd & Bar Staff 2/10/2007

I have been going to this place for over 20 years. The crowd is varied - average age is 30's to 40's. The great thing about Ty's is that while I personally know many of the patrons & staff, you will usually meet people just passing thru or visiting NYC. I have chosen to bring in the last few New Year's there because of the friendly, welcoming, & lively atmosphere. The drink prices are very reasonable & the bar staff is always friendly & serves your drinks with a smile. This bar can be cruisy or it can be a place to meet up with friends - it's your choice. What it lacks is the attitude & pretentiousness of the Chelsea bars - no attitude here. Just real men having a good time. While I personally never consider any bar my regular hangout - this bar comes as close as it gets. Pros: Friendly staff & patrons, no attitude, cruisy or hang with friends - your choice Cons: Too much disco flavored music - needs more rock more

NOT YOUR PRETTY BOY BAR 9/21/2005

In fact, this place is a place for men. Men who are comfortable with themselves and their body images. While it skews an older crowd, these guys are friendly, approachable, and aren't trying to impress. If you're tired of the S&M (Stand & Model) bars of Chelsea, travel below 14th Street and stop by Christopher Street's answer to Cheers. Pros: Popular NOT trendy, Cheap Beer, Great bartenders Cons: Small, Crowds easily more

Bear Friendly 8/16/2002

Whenerver I travel to NY, Ty's is the bar I immediately head for. Yes, I'm a bear -- but the clientele is more diverse than bears. I friendly bar - it feels like a neighborhood bar - even though my neoghborhood a over 200 miles away. Pros: comfortable, frienldy, low-key Cons: smallish more
