Best live Brazilian band in New York City 2/11/2011

Went there on a Tuesday night and was pleasantly surprised to catch the group Brasil Live with the most amazing Brazilian singers I've ever seen. This Brazilian band is made up of the best pros in NY and they play all the cool Brazilian music hits by my favorite artists. Seu Jorge, Ivete, Sangalo, Tim Maia, Jorge Benjor... you name it, they have on their repertoire. The energy is so high up there, people can't help it but to stand up, dance and party all night. The Village Underground is located right across the street from the Blue Note on West 3rd street so it's right in the middle of Village and super easy to get to. I was staying at the Hostelling International uptown Manhattan and it was a quick subway ride home. I highly recommend going there on a Tuesday night for an amazing night of Brazilian music fun. more

I Love This Place 4/29/2010

I used to be a regular at the owners old place Cafe Wha, but I love this new place much better. The music is the same fantastic quality, but the place is nicer and more comfortable, it's not as expensive, and the drinks are way better. Also many of my old favorite Cafe Wha musicians like Mike Davis, Elan, and Cheryl Pepsi Riley come down to perform with the band. I've brought a ton of friends here, and we've never had a bad time. Pros: Great Great Great Music Cons: Can't Think of Any!!! more

Awesome 3/7/2010

Inexpensive, unassuming, great time! Cons: Great Time more

An Inexpensively Good Time 1/25/2010

I've been going to the VU pretty much every Friday night for the past year and a half and I never cease to have a good time whether I come alone or with friends. I dance, drink, eat and I adore the band and love the music the DJ plays during the band's breaks. Even on the nights I can't make it out, I still watch the show online. Anyone looking to have a good time should definitely consider coming here. Pros: Live music, fun atmosphere Cons: Small dance floor more

AMAZING MY FAVORITE!!! 10/24/2009

I have been living in NYC for bit now and I have to say I love to go out and explore the scene. I came across Village Underground by accident, now I go there all the time. The martinis are amazing and very fairly priced. THE SERVICE IS AMAZING, i've had different waiters and they were all nice, which is a rare thing in NYC. The DJ is awesome, I have been there for my birthday and a bunch of other times with friends and I keep going back. You can get a table without a reservation if you get there early I they don't make you by bottles. Which lets face it....at times it's a good thing. In the end you end up with a fair tab and NOTHING BUT A GREAT TIME!!! Highly recommended! Pros: Amazing service, great DJ, friendly people Cons: Can't think of any more

My New Favorite Place 7/19/2009

I come here to dance sometimes on Saturdays, but my favorite time to go is during the week. The band is unbelievably good, and they're funny and friendly too. Pros: Great music, friendly staff, moderate prices. Cons: upstairs bathrooms need a reno. more

Favorite Club! 5/7/2009

I have been to many clubs and this is BY FAR my favorite! The music is great, decor is cool, mixed crown, yummy martinis, good food, nice staff...the list goes on and on! The black and white movies complete the experience and make it so cool! Love it so much! Pros: decor, ambiance, martini menu, music, food, service Cons: dance floor VERY crowded more

great music 11/16/2008

Have been going to this place for a while and I have to say I LOVE IT!!!! It just has everything I love. I have to say I love the fact that I can reserve a table. Gypse the party host is so easy to deal with. She isn't snooty like so many other places. I could go on and on...And really that fact that I don't have to buy a bottle to reserve is the best!! Can't wait to go back!!! Pros: yummy drinks more

best night EVER!!!! 6/13/2008

I love the Village Underground!!! The hostess Gypsee is so sweet and so quick to help. NY is filled with so many places you never know what place is good but this place is GREAT!!! From the door men to the bar MEN!!! I sent Gypsee an email and she got back to me (NO LIE) within 5 min!! by email!! and we had everything set up right away. They really take care of you at this place. My drinks were great and I didn't have to wait an hour for them either!!! I will def. be back!!!THANK YOU GYPSEE!!! Pros: great service Cons: NA more

THAT'S HOT!!! 6/13/2008

Best night of my life!!!! Danced my a$$ off!! The DJ was pumpin!!!! We got a table reservation with no hassle at all and had it all night. The guys at the door didn't have that typical attitude you get from NYC bouncers. They have a great martini menu too. So much to choose from... oh i almost forgot the best part. They have an upstairs too so if you have those friends that don't like the club scene there is a room upstairs with comfy couches to just chill one and talk. so everyone is happy :) more

BEWARE of PICKPOCKETERS!!!! 6/7/2008

In this smokey, dimly-lit, crowded, music-thumping atmosphere, beware of pickpocketers !!!! I lost about $400 worth in cash, metro card, and my cell phone, which were taken from my purse as I was dancing in the SUPER CROWDED dance floor. I've lived in city for over 5 years now, been to numerous crowded clubs, and this is the first time something like this has happened. The manager said they would take a look at their "surveillance cameras" to see if there was anything "suspicious" amidst the sea of dancers and all the smoke and colored lights. They had their security "check" the area with a flashlight for any of my missing items but surprise, surprise...turned up with nothing. The only other help or compensation I received from the manager was an "I'm so sorry!" and a "you can call back tomorrow to see if anything turns up." I definitely recommend going to a different venue if you are up for a night of dancing!! I certainly will not be going to the shady Village Underground again and will spread the word!! Cons: a very shady establishment more

Great music and dancing 4/29/2008

I had my 25th birthday party here a couple months ago, and had a great time. I had actually commissioned my boyfriend with the task of making bottle service reservations in the city, but he waited too long and a week before the celebration, I still didn't have a venue settled. We ended up contacting Village Underground since I knew some friends who had had parties there before, and while there was some initial confusion re: bottle service list vs. guest list, we squared things away with Gypsee, the FBPC event planner, and things went off without a hitch. Gypsee seated my party as soon as we got there, our waitress took good care of us the entire evening, all of my friends got in without any issues, and the music was great for dancing (hip-hop/pop) the whole night. Predictably, bottle service was pricey, especially with the mandatory 20% gratuity, but that's par for the course in Manhattan. All in all, if you're willing to do bottle service and have "good dancing atmosphere" as a prereq for a party, I'd definitely recommend Village Underground. Pros: great music, great dancing atmosphere, no-drama bottle service reservations Cons: can get extremely crowded and cramped on the dance floor more

BEST PARTY PLANNER AND BOUNCERS IN NYC 3/23/2008

I had my graduation party here a few months back and would not hesitate to choose this venue for my next party. Gypsee, the party planner was absolutely phenomenal. Their prices are par with other Manhattan venues (would be too good to be true otherwise) but I cannot stress the service enough. We had one waitress working with us the entire night and she seemed to read my mind. Every time a mixer was running low or whenever I looked up, she was at the ready. We requested certain tables since we took a tour before the event and it was ready for us as promised by the manager. We had 3 tables, a guestlist of 70 and bought 7 bottles. My no-cover guestlist was supposed to be over by midnight as instructed by the manager, but about 15 of my friends came in after midnight for free anyway! We ended up giving a 25% tip (eep!) as well as a separate tip for our waitress. The DJ was great, there was never a dull moment. I still get compliments about the party! Pros: Service, drinks, atmosphere, party packages, Shaun the bouncer, Gypsee the party planner! Cons: None more

23rd Birthday Party 3/6/2008

I celebrated my 23rd birthday here in December with around 25 people. It was fantastic. At 10pm-ish, no one was there by 11pm to 12am, the place was absolutely packed. The music was the best part - all current hip hop hits - very good DJ. My friends and I had reserved a table and we spent the night dancing on the sofas and dancefloor. Gypsy Lee is a fantastic host & party-organizer and made this party happen, seamlessly, even though I had reserved for a table less than a week in advance. Pros: Music, Service more

BEST PLACE FOR A WONDERFUL TIME AND TO MEET PEOPLE 11/11/2007

(WOW ) - the girls and I went to the FBPC well The Underground this Sat. that passed and we had so much fun and stayed until closing time. Shaun a.k.a. (SUPERMAN) & his partner were such cool guys and had their eyes on us all night to make sure we had a lovely time and no one bothered us. The location was great, the club like scene was cool, little tight but all in all it was PERFECT. We were invited to the after party at MSG but we perferred to be here instead. I give THE UNDERGROUND a 5 STARS and more (wink wink) luv you guys. We will be back real soon. Pros: Wonder place to meet people Cons: Closed Quarter more

John Mayer Played for 90 Minutes!!! 9/15/2007

I went on one of the live music nights last Thursday. The band was greaaat!!!! Second set John Mayer sat in for about an hour and a half. What could be better than that? Pros: Awesome band Cons: none that night. more

Great Time 6/8/2007

Went in on a Thursday night for the first time. Great great band playing a mix of R&B, Reggae, and Latin. Cool percussion and a girl from Christina Aguilera's band who was really hot. Quite a place, and the upstairs lounge was really comfy. Pros: Great music Cons: Crowded, line for bathroom. more

Go only once so you can say that you did. 5/21/2007

Village Underground is not what I thought it would be. I enjoyed the talent from the not-so-regulars and out of towners. Didn't like the regulars, especially the female host for that night I attended. They were a bunch of church folk gone secular and were very rude to the newbies. No musicianship at all. A couple from Japan came to perform and the guitar player was awesome and even sung in japanese. It was great but he wasn't appreciated. Also, there is so much talking through a performance that you can't focus on what's in front of you. There are lots more places in NYC that anyone willing to break out or just sing for the fun of it can go to. The negative vibe was extremely high. Won't go back. I give two out of five stars because the wings were awesome and our waitress was fabulous. Pros: Service Cons: Atmosphere, hosts more

Like old times 3/6/2007

I came on a Thursday. I was so happy to see Jason, Elan, Vinny, Noam, and Ron ( and even Jesus sitting in) - all those guys I remembered from the Cafe Wha. I like the room a little better because there's more room for dancing, although I still love Brian and Byron. Great sound system but the Wha has better food! Cons: crowded, food limited more

Fun Club! 2/12/2007

I had my birthday party at Village Undergound which I arranged through Jennifer. She is a fantastic individual to deal with. The bouncer at the door was extremely nice and let me and my friends in without a problem. From the moment we arrived until we left (around 3:30am) the music was off the hook! My friends and I were dancing all night long! The drinks were good too-strong enough to get your money's worth! I would definitely recommend people having their party here. It's a good time with no hassles. Pros: Great service, hassle free at the door, fair prices Cons: Crowded dance floor more

Editorial
  • The Scene
It's just off the insane, touristy fray of Bleecker Street and 6th Avenue, but don't be discouraged by location--or the drab entryway. Descend the dark stairwell and enter a haven for people who just want to let loose in a no-holds-barred, no-pretensions kind of place. Hundreds of miniature, reflective glass domes cast a warm light on the crowd of bankers, hipsters and stylish out-of-towners. A lounge with banquette seating sits a step above the main bar.

    The Draw
The lack of VIP area and the accompanying surly bouncers is refreshing. The piped-in music varies from hip-hop classics to '80s mainstays, all of it eminently danceable. While the steel-framed banquettes were specifically designed for dancing, many get used for semi-clandestine coupling, no doubt encouraged by undetectably potent drink specials.
