Not a place for private events 11/15/2003

I don't want to be a whiney person who complains about bouncers and door people, but yesterday's experience was more than an annoyance. One of my close friends had his birthday party there, and invited over 100 people. They promised him that all his guests who are on the guest list would get in for free. Did it happen? Not exactly. Every one of us had to pay the cover (including girls) after waiting in line for 30-40 mins, and they made my friend (b-day boy) wait in line! For obvious reasons, he got very upset (on his b-day!), and got into a fight with the manager... and you get the picture! My advice is... do not plan any private events there! Oh, and the place is actually not as cool as the picture! You feel like you are in a basement. Pros: Great music Cons: Poor management, Overcrowded, Basement-like space more

So much fun! 9/22/2003

This is the type of bar that you could go to every weekend and not get bored. It cateers to the crowd who likes to chill at a table with a bottle or the group that likes to dance. There is something for everyone. Pros: Great Selection, Good looking people, Great music Cons: Long Line more

Very Good Venue 11/19/2002

Not a bad place to see a show. Sure it got crowded but I still had a seat to relax and listen to the music. more

Rude Management!! 10/16/2002

5 of us went to see a show on a friday night. Doors were to open at 7:30pm. It was raining heavily and at 7:45 they opened the doors, gave us our tickets, stamped our hands, ripped our tickets once we got downstairs. We sat down and ordered drinks only to have 10 mins later the manager come screaming at our table about us being inside and doors weren't open yet. He was on a rampage, pointing at us and screaming. HELLO....we PAID to get in and you treat patrons this way?? Never will we go back again! RUDE beyond belief! Sound system didn't meet the hype and it is not such a great place to see a band. Pros: cleaner than wetlands Cons: Did I mention RUDE?, Very small more

Love it Love it Love it 9/16/2002

This is one of the few clubs in the city that I do not mind being packed into. I love the Open Mic nights that they have. I've never been in a room where everyone can sing and sing well. I have been twice and plan to go back again and again!!! Pros: Inexpensive, Great performers Cons: c more

good fun 7/23/2002

A good place to go with a bunch of friends for a typical village bar scene- better drinks than the other bleecker area bars. Gets a bit crowded on weekends, but what doesn't in the area? There's a loungy room to the side which is pretty nice, and the bouncer was friendly. Pros: drinks Cons: crowded more

Editorial
  • The Scene
It's just off the insane, touristy fray of Bleecker Street and 6th Avenue, but don't be discouraged by location--or the drab entryway. Descend the dark stairwell and enter a haven for people who just want to let loose in a no-holds-barred, no-pretensions kind of place. Hundreds of miniature, reflective glass domes cast a warm light on the crowd of bankers, hipsters and stylish out-of-towners. A lounge with banquette seating sits a step above the main bar.

    The Draw
The lack of VIP area and the accompanying surly bouncers is refreshing. The piped-in music varies from hip-hop classics to '80s mainstays, all of it eminently danceable. While the steel-framed banquettes were specifically designed for dancing, many get used for semi-clandestine coupling, no doubt encouraged by undetectably potent drink specials.
