Excellent Food & Margaritas 5/7/2009

I recently stumbled into this place with some friends and we were very impressed. The Margarita's were AMAZING and reasonably priced. Also, the food was very good, too. We all loved our dishes. The chips & salsa are a plus!! No complaints about this place - will be back soon. Pros: strong drinks, tasty good more

good service, good food...good good 10/15/2008

i went to tacocina after having a busy day at work....yes i am mexican and i know about mexican food...there are some tex-mex (nothing against those) dishes but there are other dishes directly from my dear mexico like the ceviche, fish in avocado sauce, or delicious fish tacos ( can you tell i like seafood?)and they have amazing calamari for my surprise cause its not a typical mexican or tex-mex dish....the service was good and very friendly, and the margaritas were superb...i dont like frozen that much so i decided to pay a little more and went directly to the good old on the rocks salt on the rim please !!!! all in all; i recomend this place and will be back becouse its a fun and tasty place to be. Pros: location, value, taste, service Cons: i wish they had live music more

Hot Hell's Kitchen Destination 8/16/2008

decent food, bad service, small portions and expensive 6/9/2008

Good location on 9th ave mixed in with several restaurants and even above average food...just way overpriced for what you get and i literally went home and made dinner as i was hungry. We went on a hot summer day and the A/C was uncomfortably cold, probably below 70 degrees, which we found tough to deal with in shorts. They need curtains or wall coverings or something to dampen the sound as the place was 33% full and very loud. To say service was average is being nice. the runner/busser was good but our server and the bartender were non-attentive and far more interested in TV and chatting with co-workers than serving. For sure i will not be back, way too many authentic places to go to or, for the prices of this joint i will go to Rosa Mexicana - which is fabulous. Pros: taste of food Cons: price, service, portion size more

good food, bad service 6/5/2008

This place is conveniently located, great atmosphere, looks and smells like great Mexican. The food is quite good and tasty, but the portions are small. Happy hours on thurs, fri, and sat are $5 drinks. The peach and raspberry margaritas were good--not too strong and not too sweet. But the service...that left quite a bit to be desired. Our waiter, although very outgoing, was very pushy, pressuring us to order drinks. Then, he takes our order and does not write it down. Of course, he had to come back twice to clarify it (and we were only two people ordering two entrees). And I had ordered no sour cream on my dish and a side of guacamole. So before the entrees come out, a big mortar comes out with a very scant light coating of guacamole with the seed still in it (not sure if this was on purpose???) with no extra chips or anything. So we wait for the entrees to come out 10 minutes later, and there was of course sour cream on my dish and my friend's tacos were steak instead of chicken. But we ate it without complaining. And when the bill comes, the waiter charged us $9.50 instead of $4 for the guacamole, stating that we ordered the appetizer. When I asked him about it, he immediately began to say very loudly ""You ordered that to start. You know that, right? You know that, right?"" When I indicated that I was not in agreement, he continued to argue just repeating ""you know that, right?"" So finally, I said sarcastically ""Yeah, right."" And then he was very content, smiled, and said ""Great."" I filled out a comment card and told the owner, and he did absolutely nothing. This is not a place ever returning for. Food is good, but not worth what just happened. I mean, $5.50 is pretty miniscule but being yelled at repeatedly is priceless. Pros: decent Mexican in the city, convenient location, good drinks specials Cons: horrible service, only for those who enjoy being yelled at by the waiting staff more

Best tamales 12/5/2007

We found Tacocina by chance last Tuesday and was a great find! After a horrible dat at work me and 2 girlfriends decided to go for a drink and found Tacocina. Their 2x1 special caught our attention!! Our bartender (Gysel) was so sweet and very entertaining (we had good laugh with her). She told us about their delicious tamales We werent sure since we have never had before. She was so entusiastic about it that we gave it a try and love it! Very good guacamole. We are definitely going back! Pros: Delicious food, bartender, ambience, 2x1 margaritas!! more

Love the restaurant and the take-out! 8/26/2007

Both the restaurant and the take-out are excellent! They are both located next to each other on 9th. The staff are very friendly, and the service in the restaurant is prompt. The decor is festive, and I really like the tables that are filled with rice, spices, and other things. They have a great 2for1 frozen magarita special too that is worth cheking out. Also, try the sangria. Pros: Food, decor more

tasty margaritas 1/9/2007

My friends and I wandered into this place for happy hour on a Thursday and it was nice. The decor and lighting are soft and make it a relaxing place to just hang out or go for a date. The staff was all friendly, with the exception of the bartender, who was a bit cold. He also put all of our drinks on one bill, which we all found strange an annoying since we were just sitting at the bar. The margaritas are 2 for 1, but you cannot share the deal with a friend, you yourself have to get 2. Still, there are so many flavors, I'm sure you'll want to try more than one. The place was empty at the beginning of happy hour, but by the end both the bar and restaurant were starting to fill up. Pros: margaritas, atmosphere Cons: bartender more

Restaurant + Express 3/13/2006

Tacocina is the trendy, but cheap Mexican fare that is available along the busy 9th Avenue in Hell's Kitchen. Next door is the Express delivery location, where the food is also really good. Service is a bit shotty at times, but its worth the hassle if the Mexican craving gets the best of you. Pros: Food, Prices, Service Cons: Long Wait, Crowded more

Two Choices -- One Restaurant 1/23/2003

I've eaten both here and the Tacocina Express a few doors down. The TaExpress offers some of the best dinner specials around as far as value for the money (But as they have no seats you need to take it home) I think both places share the same kitchen. Overall good food and big poritions make a great value. more

Upscale Mex 5/20/2002

TaCocina (not to be confused with sloppy steam-tray Mex takeout TaCocina Express two doors down) has a nice black-wood-and-adobe tile design to it--it supports the sophisticated take on Mexican favorites their kitchen serves. Portions are huge. The Mole sauce (a big litmus test for authenticity) is appropriately rich but not adventurous. Tamales are robust. The waitstaff seems overextended (based on 3 visits). Note the first basket of chips (and zippy salsa) is free, the rest will cost. Pros: ambience, strong menu Cons: long waits on service, portions too big more
