THIS PLACE IS SO GOOD

Worst

This place used to be good when they weren't trying to be like Rosa Mexicano or Maya. Pros: margaritas ok but expensive. Cons: Expensive.

Decent but not worth going out of your way for it 6/5/2010

Didn't like it too much, was overpriced for what it was. Pros: good service, food was okay Cons: Nothing special, overpriced more

Order the Taco Taco Tacos 10/11/2009

I always order the same thing, Guacamole, Tacos - Taco Taco style and a Michelada. The guacamole is made fresh, table side and they make it as spicy as you want it. Taco Taco style is delicious pork marinated in deliciousness. The taco platter also comes with rice and beans and it is all absolutely great, not greasy like another popular mexican restaurant in the neighborhood. The micheladas are good as well, not the traditional ones that you get in Mexico, but good none the less and they also make them extra spicy if you want it. The service has always been superb. Everyone is always friendly. I did stray once and order the scallop tacos, which was a special for the day. They were deep fried and incredibly greasy. Unfortunately, made my taco soggy and not good. So stick with the Taco Taco Tacos, you can't go wrong. Pros: Taco Taco Tacos, Guacamole, Micheladas more

UNPROFESSIONAL MANAGER NAMED NICEL 2/7/2009

Food was DECENT but very oily. The service was slow, but that's not even the worst part about it. Long story short, my friend and I just ate there and we asked the waitress before we ordered if we can split the bill with our credit card. She told us it would be ok, so when the bill came and they refused to let us split it ($25 minimum) the manager (Nicel is her name) came over and screamed at us in front of the whole restaurant when we were trying to argue that that's not what the waitress told us. She also grabbed my credit card out of my hand and told me too bad she's charging the bill to my card. I had to threaten calling the police beause I wasn't authorizing that charge on my card!. SO..... UNPROFESSIONAL SERVICE Pros: Interesting menu, food is ok Cons: slow service, unprofessional managers (just hope if you go there nothing happens that you need a manager's help) more

Terrible service, not-bad food 11/2/2008

Shockingly slow, almost non-existent service. Did anyone care that our dinner was over an hour in coming? If it ever arrived, we didn't know, because we left.... never got glasses of water... utensils.... a re-do on the margarita (why was it served w/o salt? how come it was kind of watery, which I see someone else mentioned?). I had the Oaxaca tamale as a starter. Pretty good, except that I had to eat it w/o the margarita, which was a total bummer. The place is packed because the prices are not bad and the food is pretty good. Be forewarned: your order goes to the bottom of the heap if you don't get the tableside guac they like to push. I'm sure it's great, but we left feeling really screwed because we didn't order it. Next to us, a party of four was served way before us having come in about 20 minutes after us... An older couple kept asking, Can we get some service here? Please? Their crime: they turned down the guacamole. Pros: Good - maybe great - food Cons: Service is so terrible your food may not arrive at all. more

A bit more upscale Mexican, slow service, fun atmosphere 5/19/2008

Fresh Guacamole is great, would not suggest the Chipotle Chicken. The service was a bit slow. Prices are pretty high for Mexican food, if you went up 10 blocks it would be a lot cheaper. Pros: Atmosphere Cons: Price more

Great Tacos on Upper Eastside 4/15/2007

Ok, if you ever find yourself in the upper easside...consider stepping into this joint. Tacos are priced a little above norm but it's the price u pay when in the UES. Beer and tacos go hand in hand.. enjoy1 more

We'd love to see this place get it right. 3/10/2007

We went in March 2007 after we saw this restaurant featured on Bobby Flay's show. (They were setting up to film for another show when we got there.) This restaurant needs to immediately fix its huge chips and ""salsa"" problem (Stale chips made who knows when served with a ""salsa"" which was nothing more than sweetened tomato sauce0. Come on people, its not that difficult to chop up tomatoes or tomatillos, onion, cilantro and jalapenos, & its not that time consuming to fry up a new batch of chips once an hour (No-one needs a huge box with more than a days worth of chips...they get stale that way!). Honestly, we'd LOVE to see this place turn it around as there are many elements that would turn this place into a superstar, IF they could JUST get their food right (and really, the food thing is easy to solve with reasonable cost and minimal effort). The restaurant is cozy and quaint: decorated with authentically Mexican ornaments (brightly colored walls and with posters of hot chilies). The margaritas are excellent (on the rocks, with or without salt - $8) and they serve them in wine glasses with a straw. The tableside guacamole is excellent and only $8. Unfortunately, that's where the excellence ends. I had the taco plate ($10 for 2 tacos with the usual rice and beans.) The pork in the tacos (carnitas) was dry, the beef (carne asada) was bland, tasted and looked boiled rather than grilled. My girlfriend liked the beef quesadillas? cheesiness and thought that tortilla holding it together had the perfect texture (hard to do), but alas, there was boiled-tasting beef inside, completely wrecking an otherwise perfect dish. About us: Were Mexican food nuts (we've lived in LA and Texas for 18 years, and spent a lot of time in Mexico (on the border, in Mexico City, Oaxaca, and Monterrey). We are in search of the best Mexican food in Manhattan... We'll keep looking. more

Best Fish Tacos in the city 1/8/2007

The food is outstanding. While this place is a hole in the wall, the ambiance isn't terrible. It is decidedly Mexican. The fish tacos are highly recommended if you like California style. The brunch is also very good. I would avoid the bathrooms as they aren't the cleanest. Pros: Great food, cheap, nice place to have a bunch of friends meet Cons: Ambience, bathrooms more

Avoid at all costs !!! 10/17/2006

I went to Taco Taco for lunch today--whatta rip-off ! The meal cost over $20.00 including tip on a weekday, which would be fine if you were at a fancy place, but it is a little ""hole in the wall"". I had enchiladas and a margarita, both were awful. The enchiladas had no flavor at all, were certainly PACKED with calories (cost: $9). It was a big plate, I'll say that. The margarita ($8) was the worst I have ever had. It was watery and strange. The food did not sit well either. Avoid this place at all costs. Pros: Very pleasant little room, charming Cons: terrible food and high cost more

Delish and Reliable 10/13/2005

What a reliable neighborhood Mexican restaurant! If you're dining in, the tiny lit room is endearingly cheesy but festive. The freshly made guacamole is fabulous. Portions are big (the sandwiches are super yummy) and the sangria is above average. Recently, my roomies and I began ordering take-out from Taco Taco and were VERY pleased with our delivery. Note: they only take cash! more

SOME OF THE BEST TASTING TACOS EVER!! 9/11/2005

I had been to TACO TACO before but didnt' get the Tacos. But this past sunday I did. I felt sorta silly ordering the ""Tacos de Americano"", but if you truly crave the taste of the best taco you've had get em. I mean most people have never had a really tasty taco other than (taco bell or a cafeteria). The taco meat is amazing!!! OH and they will always ask if you would like to start with some fresh table made guacamole. GET IT. the person will come right to your table and you watch him peel avacado and mash it , and squeeze fresh lime juice, with all the other ingredients, its something worth checking out. They got good Sangria and they do an assortment of frozen magaritas (different flavors) Pros: BEST TACO BEEF, GUACOMOLE FRESH MADE more

Finally mexican that is actually spicy. 5/17/2005

As a 10 year NYer who grew up in Mexico City I was elated to have found Taco Taco. Their food actually taste mexican and not tex-mex, salsa is spicy and they have a great real mexican dishes menu. For dinner I recommend Carne Tampiqueña (steak) And for brunch the Huaraches with meat and a couple eggs on top, a typical mexican hangover plate! With a Negra Modelo (hold the lime! mexicans don't drink every beer with lime, only Tecate, not even Corona) I can't imagine getting some drinks there cause the bathroom is down a very steep stairway!!! And for families they have high chairs and waiters were really nice to my kid. Overall nice experience. Pros: Good Food!!! Cons: Dowstairs Bathroom more

Cheap & Cheerful Authentic Mexican 4/20/2004

Taco Taco is the place to bring a friend or two for margaritas and cheap, fresh mexican ... it would be so easy to walk by this hole-in-the-wall, but you'd be missing out on some truly authentic, fresh Mex. It's called Taco Taco for a reason - try them! Also recommend the sopes, empanadas, black bean soup (very filling, watch out) and the tortas (perfect greasy hangover food). Brunch is fantastic, as well ... you're not coming here for atmosphere or great service - just delicious Mex on the cheap! Pros: inexpensive, fresh food, never crowded Cons: , slow service more

Festive 12/5/2003

Having recently moved to NYC from Texas, I am always on the hunt for good tex mex. Although this place looks as if they are in constant celebration of Cinqo de Mayo, the food is surprisingly good and fresh. Unfortunately they do not have chile con queso and their salsa bowls are teeny tiny but overall this is a decent place in the upper east. Pros: margs, inexpensive Cons: on the tacky side, no queso more
