A Bar you can go to alone but you won't be lonely 3/30/2011

I went there recently after-work on a mid-week night. The bartenders were great, knowledgeble and non-assuming (as in No Attitude). I could not believe the recession low prices of the top-shelf drinks! Why should the Bartender/owner buy-back drinks ? Be sure to TIP the bartenders like you mean it /appreciate their service (No I am not a bartender and I don't know Subway employees...it is just the right thing to do at those low prices) . The juke box music was kicking A** and taking Names! everybody seemed to be in their own conversation , having fun and not boasting about where they work or went to college, thus I appreciate the older local patrons who frequent this place, they could care less about your resume, just kick back, relax and act responsibly. This is a hidden dive bar gem and I will definitely go back. more

a place that the new NYC forgot 10/8/2009

Nearly every time I end up here it turns in to an event of some sort. We run in to friends and go there, then more friends show up from out of no where. Which is kind of too bad because it's the type of place that would be good to just park yourself on a barstool and soak in the atmosphere. Sure, it's a dive, but there is something oddly grand about the place. Like it's a place that the new NYC forgot about. It's got a good juke box and the drinks are a great price. Forget it's uptown location,this is what oldschool bars used to be like! The bartenders are the best ! A best kept secret 9/29/2008

I proposed to my wife in this bar twenty years ago and I'm glad to see it hasn't changed, it still retains the same NY charm that it always had, from the plushness of the seating to it's intimate booths, this is THE place to bring that special date. This bar reminds me of Cheers, you know the place where everybody knows your name, and hey, if they don't when you walk in, you bet y'all will make friends before you leave, why you can even leave your phone number on the bathroom wall if you're not one of the Facebook generation!\r In summary, great atmosphere, ideal location, great drink selection (they have a top notch sommolier) warn friendly faces all around :)\r \r more

Needs Better Bartenders 8/25/2008

Used to be great but now seems to employ useless bar tenders who look like they should be employed as part of a rapper's entourage or outside a nightclub as opposed to being behind a dive bar. Buy-backs? Nope! Waiting for 15 minutes to get served in a half empty bar while the bar tender pops peanuts into his mouth and increases the girth of his already flabby belly? The Subway Inn, I found, to be one of the most Sophisticated and elitest boutique bars in all of Manhattan. Located in the center of New York's Midtown on Lexington Avenue across from Bloomingdales, the ambiance of this 5-star beverage aristocracy is sure to impress a fine date before a Broadway show, or perhaps an evening performance at Carneghie Hall, the Guggenheim Museum, or even a dessert just blocks away at Serendipity III. Still my favorite dive 6/1/2007

It's great to see that the Subway Inn is still there and hasn't changed. I lived in the neighborhood in the 60's and was a regular at the ""Subway"". Only the bartender has changed. John and Jack are no longer there. Owners, Charkie Ackerman and Jack Schweller don't seem to be there either. ""Oscar"" the parannah also was not seen in the fish tank behind the bar. 15 cent beer is also a thing of the past. Everything else is the same, thank heavans. If Charlie were still there, he would make you a sandwich about 3 AM. That would ensure that the four or five of us regulars would stick around til 4 AM-closing time. Great Dive Bar 12/13/2006

Took my first trip to New York last week. We did the normal fare, dinner, Rockerfeller Plaza, the whole nine yards, and looking for a few last drinks before returning for the train ride home, we stumbled across The Subway Inn. I absolutely loved this bar, it is the quintisential dive bar. The bathrooms are not the cleanest, and they are covered in graffiti, and the bar area is dingy and dark. But I will never forget The Subway Inn. I had a great time. It was a Saturday night around 9:00 and there were plenty of seats at the bar, the Golden Tee game was open, and the drinks were cheap, $3.50 for beer, and $4.00 for Jameson on the rocks. If you are looking for somewhere nice, this may not be the place. If you are looking for a bar that has two TV's both showing ""Full House"" on Nick at Night, this is the bar for you. Sorry to hear it was spruced up! 8/23/2005

I always thought this place was GREAT. I used to go to happy hour with a co-worker years ago. It was dark, dank and the drinks were reasonable. The one complaint I had was that we got yelled at by some waiter for turning off the light in the booth we were sitting in. He got all nasty saying ""this isn't your livingroom"" or something to that effect. EW. Other than that, it was never overcrowded and it was a great place to vege, drink and be merry...or not. more

Best Dive Bar in NY 7/22/2005

This is definitely the best dive bar in NY. Great selection on the Juke Box. Non-fancy drinks are the cheapest in NY. Irish bartenders just add to the overall atmosphere. Great place to start the night or end up at. Pros: cheap, music more

Not a dive anymore, alas..... 6/7/2005

This is not a dive anymore - at least pricewise. No local drunks could afford to drink here anymore. The citysearch review, which induced my friends and I to visit before a show at Au Bar, is very out of date. The schlocky knick knacks are still there, but the dust is gone. his place has been spuced up to a bland, former dive, with club prices for very small drinks. In short, don't bother. Cons: small drinks, expensive drinks, no dust! more

Yeah, it's a Dive Bar 11/21/2002

All you want is to dive into a bath as soon as you leave. Went on a lark with a friend, and I don't understand how/why the health department allows this place to remain open. It doesn't serve food, so I guess they figure all the alcohol sterilizes the bar, but it still worries me! It is literally falling down (check the glass bricks outside) and the ""characters"" at the bar (at least when we were there) are really rather sad group. The bartender advised I NOT use the bathroom since it was mid-week and they only clean it on Sundays. Maybe he was joking but in the interest of my good health I took his advice. This place is scary. Damn Good Dive 11/19/2002

I was visiting NYC from Boston last week, and I got introduced to the Subway Inn. This bar has CHARACTER. Everything is great from the dirt-covered mirror to the fluorescent lights at the tables. I felt like I needed to carve my name into the wall, just like (what seemed like) eveybody that had sat there before me had done. This place may also serve as a good judge of character. I was with a girl who didn't squirm at the dirt covered bar (to me, that says: good catch). This place has it all. more

I Used to LOVE this place the whole dirty cuteness of it the, staff till i saw through the rust and masking taped seats and saw that all the staff were Jerks especially that creep micheal that lives in the back room.....you know the one that cleans the beers off the tables. more

Putting the Dive in Divine 7/9/2002

I've never lived around here, so Subway Inn's always been a trek for me, but that's probably a good thing -- it's pretty clear that it becomes a local habit for anyone near its powerful, dingy orbit. Drinks are cheap, hours are late, lighting's low and the low-key atmosphere is slowly becoming unique as well as antique in the rapidly gentrifying (is there any other pace of gentrifying?) neighborhood. It's a real find -- if you like your bars dark, cheap, friendly, and authentic, catch it now, before it's too late. more

Super fun NY hideaway 5/28/2002

It may have just been the night we were there, but the crowd was Very fun and laid back and the drinks were flowing. The jukebox had great selections and the atmosphere was perfect for a bachelorette party! more
