I've been here a couple of times for lunch and can't get enough, I love meaty sandwhiches, and this is the place to come for that. The portions are huge and it is pricey, but you do get what you pay for, sometimes I'll even walk out with leftovers from my sandwhich, because its so huge! The bread tatses fresh and the meat too, Its just an overall great place and I would recommend it to anybody.

Sarge's is one of the truly great, classic old New York delis. They are increasingly a dying breed, so it's worth experiencing while you still can. fantastic cured meats and deli foods and run by absolute characters. It's like a movie set if it weren't so commonplace New York. One of the quintiseential deli experiences in New York along with Katz's.

Moving across Sixth Avenue from the west side to the east and expanding to fill the vacuum left by the departure of famed neighbor and competitor Balducci's, Jefferson Market has come into it's own. Not that it had anything to prove, being a neighborhood staple for more than 75 years, in a neighborhood which pride's itself on knowing from fresh. The selection of fresh produce, meats and fish is unsurpassed and the cheeses and prepared salads make for a simple meal for city dwellers to busy to cook.

Thank goodness Second Avenue re-opened on 33rd Street. Besides the addictive pastrami, the chicken-in-a-pot is like grandma's. Jewish penicillin, the best matzoh ball...yummy. and they deliver.

Le Basket is the most wonderful, greasy lunch 'salad' bar ever. Open whenever I've wanted to go, this place has no shame in leaving out food that clearly looks like it was left out all day long.. And they have no shame because the stuff still tastes great: loaded with MSG, sauce, and calories, the 'food' part is just an afterthought. Enjoy a wide variety of mayo-based salad products and crispy chinese chicken, dumplings, etc... The sandwich bar is reputed to be fairly healthy, but I've never tried it. There's a long line at lunch time, but the cashiers are incredible (think Soup Nazi from Seinfeld), so don't worry about a wait. In sum, it's a great local stop, but don't come out of your way to try it.

Buffa’s is the best breakfast place on the Lower East Side and, perhaps, in all of New York City. This place has something that is lacking in many other places today and that is character. There are few places with the history in their respective neighborhoods. The owner, John, is a great guy, but is hard on any poor guy who tries to get cute when ordering. The food is great and so is the service.

My mom, gone now 10 years, loved this store. Born in Naples before World War I, my mother was an expert on Italian food. She seldom spoke Italian at home, but even in her later years, she would start chatting, ordering, joking in her native tongue the second she entered the place. One time, the counter man asked her where she lived. Her house was in Bergen County with a view of NYC. But she told them she lived in the "woods." A NYC girl at heart, New Jersey was clearly not her beloved City.
We would make the trip on Sunday mornings because this place has it all. The best meat, bread, cheese, olives (to die for), salads, canned specialties and cooked foods. On the way home, more than once, we would start eating hunks of bread or the green olives.
The store is a throwback to a time when these stores were everywhere.
You should go and eat something you have never eaten before. You'll thank me and you'll make my mother happy. She loved to feed guests.
