Worst

Don't get caught up in the decor for this restaurant is overpriced and the food is only average.

It's closed! 1/21/2009

Just a few nights ago I passed by on my way home to get some Pad Thai and the place is closed! I don't even know when they closed and it's in my neighborhood. So many places are either losing leases and/or not renewing them or leaving just because the rents are too high. It's a shame, the service and food was really good. I suppose I will try the Times Square Ruby Foo's when and if I am in that neighborhood. New York in general is not what it used to be and for a native New Yorker/Manhattanite like me, that is an even bigger shame. For all the ""cleaning up"" 'of neighborhoods and other ""improvements"", this city has sadly lost its unique and quirky nuances and flavors. more

food ok, waitress need more training!! 1/2/2009

First time to NY,first time to thisa restaurant.I agree with another reviewer that if you know Chinese food, their food is not great.Dim Sum is not up to my standard, but for tourists who do not know Chinese food that much,it will be ""ok"". I went there around 5pm after I saw the afternoon show on X'mas eve. Not really hungry so I just order some appetizers as snacks. The waitress asked us if we wanted regular water or sparkle water. My 24 year old daughter said regular water;i my 10 year old said sparkle water because he was attracted by the word ""sparkle"". She looked at me, I said regular water. Instead of listening to the adults, the waitress decided to bring a BIG bottle of ""sparkle"" water. Ended up it was $7.50!! I orderd 2 appitizers and a bowl of noodle. She looked at me and said ""that's all?"" two times, like she was not happy with the amount amount of money I am going to spend. Half way eating the pork ribs I decided to order a cocktail to go with it. Another waitress took my order and when the first waitress came back with the drink, she asked me TWICE if that's my drink. After she left the drink on the table, she right away took away my dishes, the pork ribs I was going to eat! No wonder why she questioned me about if that's my drinks, because SHE decided that I must have finished my food, and should go! So I called the other waitress, she reported it to the manager, and the manager came apologize. He took the pork ribs off my bill and send another pork ribs to us.Good damage control! However, the management should make sure those all frontline staff also know what is ""customer service"". Pros: decoration and interior design is good Cons: overpriced sparkle water and not good server more

delicious tuna 10/16/2008

I came here on a business lunch and the food was absolutely spectacular. I order one of the special rolls, and ordered an additional one even though I was not as hungry before The service is slow, the bar is not great, the server was a bit rude toi say the least. Considering I was on ""lunch"" at 4P.M"" when it was completely empty and she had 2 other tables besides myself I felt as if the girl didn't know what she was doing. I am more than fond of servers who can recommend dishes and specials rather than spat food on the table for me. Hi, thanks. Pros: Good sushi Cons: Service more

great food at good price 10/3/2008

I saw this place on the news this morning and decided to try it . WOW the food was outstanding and the service was excelent ( Brigett). This is a good place for a first date. Very affodable and family friendly. The drinks are a little pricy but very good. I live in New Jersey and would come across the bridge to eat here again. Tell a friend!!! Pros: Food , Ambience and price more

Fun, go dunring the day or off-hours 4/9/2008

Food is good, fun atmosphere. A bit pricy. Best enjoyed off hours, when they aren't too busy: late afternoon , not a weekend evening. more

Overcooked, Overrated 2/13/2008

I have to admit, so many people told us to go to Ruby Foos...so for a special night with our children, going to Kid's Night on Broadway, we took them to Ruby Foos on Broadway Theater District. We had an early reservation (5:30). The service and host was very good since we called a few times to tell them that we were running late because of bad weather getting into the city and they were very accomodating. I would say that was the only good thing about it. We ordered the crispy chicken lettuce wraps and pork dumplings for appetizer. The pork dumplings were the best thing we ate. The Chicken lettuce wraps had very little chicken to put in the lettuce. We ordered the Pad Thai Chicken and Shrimp, the Ruby Stir Fried Chicken and a house sushi roll (I forgot which one). The chicken and shrimp in the Pad Thai were dry and over cooked as was the chicken in the Stir Fried Chicken (which tasted burnt as well). The sushi roll was not fresh, very dry. I cant imagine that it was just the items we ordered. I would have had a much better chinese meal going to a different restaurant, paying half the price and getting a much better tasting meal. Pros: Good Service Cons: Awful food more

very delicious with excellent service 9/10/2007

Went to Ruby Foo's uptown location, it was an early dinner pre show. 6:00 reservation. the place was not crowded at that time. We were offered a table in the window, but i asked if we could sit in the main dining room, which is very dramatic with its sweeping stairway and eclectic Asian decor. The drink called Ruby Foo, was potent and delish. It was brought to the table in the shaker and poured into the frosted martini glass by the server. There was enough for two full drinks in that shaker!! When my glass was almost empty the waitress came over and poured the rest into my glass. That's Great Service. Great food recommendations by the waitress too.We had some Cali rolls, tempura rolls, pork dumplings for app's...all very good and fresh. The main course of the Filet mignong with chinese broccoli was amazing, very tender and flavorful. We told the waitress when we got there that we were going to a show and she made sure the service was prompt and everything was hot and served just right!!! We left around 7:15 and it was getting busy, you can see they were setting up for some big parties....also they have a fun kids menu and were very attentive to the children seated near us. Pros: great service, delicious food more

Ruby Fooey 9/2/2007

Fooooey - anyone that knows anything about asian food would agree that this place totally sucked. i've been there with my husband, looking forward to a nice romantic dinner. the place caught our attention by its nice ambience, but that really all it has. as you feel like sitting in a fridge this restaurant is a big rip off and i wouldn't recommend at all to go there. its not more than an overpriced mcdonald-standart place!!! Pros: ambience Cons: everything else more

THe place is GREAT - dont listen to the other reviewer - must be crazy! 5/2/2007

Ruby Foo's Uptown is Incredible! I attended a private event there and it was phenominal. The staff was extremely professional and the food was excellent. They did a cocktail hour downstairs and then a sit down dinner on the top floor - Don't listen to the other reviews! These people are idoits. It's not supposed to be ""authentic"" Chinese food anyway- This is pan Asian-fusion - get with it people - The place is not a tourist trap at all it is stunning and beautiful!!!!! - the problem is that these so called ""real"" new yorkers who write negative reviews are always on the look out for the little known out of the way dingy dungeon places that are up and coming and no one knows about- Ruby foo's is well known, dramatic, in your face and bold and it's all on purpose - they want you to feel like youre in a fantasy world. I LOVE this place and have lived in Manhattan on the upper west side for 25 years so believe me, I know good food people! Oh also, try the ruby foo - their cocktail -they are incredible! Pros: Decor, menu, ambiance, drinks Cons: exterior facade doesnt look like anything special - once you walk through the doors you will be in awe - it's stunning! more

BIG RIP OFF and BAD FOOD (FAST FOOD CHINESE) 4/15/2007

This is the quintissential tourist trap with all the facades that go along with it. The whole theme thing and the faux-chinese decor , nevertheless both locations are touristy (Upper West Side and Times Square). Cons: MANY more

Nice design, but average food 11/18/2006

This place is huge. They have an attractive design and nice location. But the food is of a very average quality. Even when it looks so attractive in the menu it appears to just ok on the table. Pros: Nice atmosphere Cons: the food more

Every time we visit the City 10/12/2006

Our first trip to ""Foos"" was the Times Square location in June 2005. Since that date, we've visited the Upper West Side location 3 times and after tonight's visit, my wife noted that this is one of her favorite places to eat, not only in NYC, but anywhere! I agree. We typically spend $100 per visit and this includes a couple of drinks each, appetizer, two main entrees (I recommend the #51 and the #62) and a side dish (always the pineapple chicken fried rice). We are stuffed when we're done. Very fresh ingredients, very good flavors, very good service (the last 2 waiters were very easy to talk with and knowledgable of the menus and ingredients) and a very fun atmosphere. more

birthday surprise 9/14/2006

This has got to be one of the best places I've ever eaten at. My fabulous friend surprised me by throwing me a birthday party here with all my co-workers. The place speaks for itself. Its got ambiance and the waiters are very friendly. The food is excellent. You have a choice between dim sum, chinese and japanese. The peking duck is delicious. The drinks are good too. I definitely recommend this place for groups. I had such a great time here tonight. If you live in New York and you love the bright lights at 42nd St. come to this place and try it out! It's sheek, savvy and very nice. Pros: ambiance, friendly and quick service, excellent food and drinks Cons: there are no cons more

Love the Uptown Location 8/18/2006

Ok, just looking up reviews for my favorite spots and noticed that MANY people who have posted reviews here are reviewing the wrong Ruby Foo's location. Pros: Price, Location (UWS), Atmosphere and Service. Great for large groups & kid friendly Cons: None that I know of! more

Overall: Great Food & Service & PLUM SAKI! 8/13/2006

I've been here three times (with different girls, hehe) and they are always impressed by the ambience, food, and drinks. Pros: good food, good service, fair pricing (share a meal!) Cons: a little touristy, the service can sometimes be a little too fast (stacking food) more

love this place 6/15/2006

great great food...I definitely would consider this one of my favorite spots in the city...I absolutely love the tuna...and as for the sushi...you cant beat it.....the atmosphere is totally cool and fun...and really nice for a crowd....the drinks are also worth trying.....definitely going back and back and back..... Pros: nice looking... Cons: little crowded more

Suprising... 6/4/2006

For a steven hanson restaurant this place in one word sucked!! our reservation was for 7:30, we arrived early and were told we had to wait. We sat at the bar and had suprisingly good drinks, the bartenders were very friendly and helpful in choosing one of their foo-foo cocktails. We were finally seated at 8:15, and our server was horrid, she knew nothing of the specials and told us all the wrong ingredients in the dishes we ordered. If we ever go back again, we'll just sit at the bar! Pros: Bartenders, Drinks Cons: Servers, Food, Wait Time more

Get Real.... 5/7/2006

You are in Times Square; by far the best restaurant in the area. Long waits --- I've eaten there over a dozen times; had to wait at least half the time; but for less time than it takes to have one drink. The food -- unique and inspired. The service -- exceptionally quick/attentive; tell them to slow down the service if it is 'too good.' Groups -- excellent job for groups up to 8. If your nose gets bent out of shape for any little thing, the management will make it right. And if it does get bent out of shape, you should have gotten in a cab or a train and chosen a restaurant outside of Times Square. I have a lot of business assocaites and customers who stay in Times Square hotels. I *always* recommend Ruby Foo's to them, and no one says anything but THUMBS UP. more

What has changed? 4/24/2006

I have always been a fan of this restaurant. Have referred a number of people. I took an out-of-town client their last Monday and was totally humiliated. The food--all of it was of very poor quality. I wonder if something has changed! The pad thai was soggy, cold, and tasteless. I asked for it spicy and it arrived with absolutely no sense of heat. I asked for chicken with it and it had 2 small pieces of chicken in the dish. I must say, it will be a long time if at all, before I would choose to go back. Pros: ambience, drinks, service Cons: food, food, food more
