Rose Bar

For one hour each Christmas Eve the otherwise private Gramercy Park across the street opens its gates to the public, and after carols and a brisk walk through its garden, the perfect respite to the winter's chill is a seat at the Rose Bar or, in our case, its adjacent Jade Bar, where bartender Jerry welcomed us warmly, and continued our holiday cheer with extraordinary libations, including its classic Bohemian Sidecar, a magical concoction of cognac, triple sec, lime juice and that forbidden green fairy known as absinthe, and my husband enjoyed some of the finest Scotches he has ever appreciated, incl the Whistle Pig, and Templeton. $19 a drink? Sure, but for its wonderful walls of artsy murals, cozy dark ambience, polished wood and velvet touches, and the chance to saunter in the footsteps of such NYC famous denizens as Jagger and Warhol, eminently worth it. The bar you go to hang out at every night? Probably not, at least not on our budgets. But for that special date, or a gift to oneself because you deserve it? Absolutely worth it. The Rose indeed still blooms. more

The Rose bar is wayyyy overrated... Its makes it almost impossible to get in, while the place is almost empty. They tell you to email rosebar@gramercyparkhotel for reservations when the email does not exist. No one answers. There are underage models that are invited and old perves that will do anything to sleep with you. The bouncers are rude and the drinks are terrible. You'd have to be from out of town or maybe just Queens to think this place is anymore than what it is... an overpriced hotel bar that had it's day two years ago thanks to hosting underage ""celebrities"" like Mischa Barton and the like.\r \r Today, you will find a bar that conveys exclusivity through outright rude behavior to its guests... including those at the hotel with confirmed reservations, so stay elsewhere. Once inside and seated, the experience continues on its downhill slide... first of all... where are the people?, meanwhile your waitress has her mind on her acting ""career"" and will barely tolerate your order... for an overpriced ($20+)/very average cocktail, the restaurant manager Eric with more mommy issues than his trust fund, live-in regulars spends too much time in the bathroom and will likely move your table (more than once) to seat underage guys in shiny striped shirts. And the music can all be found directly off of iTunes, so dont expect much originality there.\r \r In the end, the place had a Page Six run and got some hype... TWO YEARS AGO... the only people who havent figured this out by now are the hotel guests funneled in by the concierge and the angry staff who resent that the run is over and now take it out on their new breed of ""less cool"" customers b/c they personally cant afford to drink there.\r \r Take your money elsewhere, there are many amazing exlcusive spots in New York where once inside you'll see why it's worth it. If you are going to spend 23$ on a small glass of wine, they need to at least offer a good one. \r \r Staff is abnoxious. \r \r Don't be fooled. If you are a guest, and even when it is practically empty, they won't let you in without a reservation. \r \r Seriously save your time and money. \r They are just not that special. By the way, Jade and Rose Bars are pretty much the same place. They share the same space. I noticed that most of these ""cool"" places have couple of things in common: 1 - ridiculously overpriced 2 - bad / mediocre service I spent an entire afternoon there one Saturday playing pool with my friend. With $20 drinks I can still live, but $9 for a cup of tea? I think it's too much. Their food wasn't bad and priced relatively better than drinks. Will I go there again - may be, will I drink their tea - no. $200 for lunch and a few drinks for 2 people - it's a bit too much even by my standards... Pros: Great athmosphere Cons: $$$! more

This is the Best hotel in NYC. From its rooms, to Rose Bar, it will not disappoint. Rooms are expensive but the service is worth every penny. Def check out the roof during the day. Great drinks and views Pros: Rose Bar more

I used to live a couple of blocks away and watched the hotel's transformation. After living in LA for a year, we recently went back and stayed there. The decor is really stunning. Feels like the old Royalton but updated for our times - lots of velvet, dimmed lights, and loads of style. The feeling when you are there is great, but of course all this chic comes at a price. The 'private' rooftop which is supposed to be for hotel guests was booked for a private function for each of the 3 nights we had stayed there - that's a bit of an overkill by the managment. The bars downstairs require reservations (but that's OK they are very popular). The restaurant downstairs looks amazing, but the food tasted exactly like my chinese takeaway on 19th street, only with bigger plates and higher prices. Probably they need to do some work on that front. All in all, a very good experience, and I even got to use their keyed acccess to Gramercy park and read the paper and had coffee before my morning meetings. Went there during Holiday season with my wife to enjoy a few glasses of wine. Raining outside, we were greeeted at the cab with an umbrella and brought right inside. It was a quiet evening by the fireplace. Had a few drinks and relaxed, would definitely go back. Tad expensive, but in line with NY prices more

Was just there and it was pretty well dead. Looks okay for a business drink or if you just want to sit and talk in a quiet setting with friends, but if you're looking for a scene, it's moved on. Pros: good art and nice use of space Cons: boring, falls short of hype more
