For one hour each Christmas Eve the otherwise private Gramercy Park across the street opens its gates to the public, and after carols and a brisk walk through its garden, the perfect respite to the winter's chill is a seat at the Rose Bar or, in our case, its adjacent Jade Bar, where bartender Jerry welcomed us warmly, and continued our holiday cheer with extraordinary libations, including its classic Bohemian Sidecar, a magical concoction of cognac, triple sec, lime juice and that forbidden green fairy known as absinthe, and my husband enjoyed some of the finest Scotches he has ever appreciated, incl the Whistle Pig, and Templeton. $19 a drink? Sure, but for its wonderful walls of artsy murals, cozy dark ambience, polished wood and velvet touches, and the chance to saunter in the footsteps of such NYC famous denizens as Jagger and Warhol, eminently worth it. The bar you go to hang out at every night? Probably not, at least not on our budgets. But for that special date, or a gift to oneself because you deserve it? Absolutely worth it. The Rose indeed still blooms.
