I was first introduced to Red & White Spa through a Lifebooker Loot deal about six months ago. Even after researching and stumbling across some pretty harsh reviews here on Yelp and Citysearch, I decided to give them a go and have had four fantastic waxes since then. I guess you could say I am a seasoned (4+ years) recipient of Brazilians and my pain threshold has gotten pretty decent, so I'm a good guinea pig in that regard. I've been to both Anna and Dominika (I really may be butchering her name but she's Polish & I'm not the best with accents). I make appointments through their website or sometimes by calling (it's not uncommon to get voicemail and they'll return your call). I've never experienced the appointment time snafus that other reviewers have had -- most often, it's me that isn't able to get out of work when I expected or am running late -- so I can't testify about that arena.
I started out with Anna and she really is such a doll. Petite, blonde, no-nonsense but gentle. She is not a chatterbox while waxing and I appreciate that -- even though a bikini wax isn't the most relaxing of experiences, sometimes it's really my only downtime (sad..!) and I love being able to chill out and be distracted by a magazine. At the time I was seeing her, I was only doing the Deep Bikini, which is not the whole shebang -- however, I recommended her heavily to friends because although she applies wax to smaller sections than I was used to previously, I was surprised at how relatively painless this was with her. She is very methodical and quick.
I saw Dominika this morning and thought she was outstanding. She loves to chat during the session and I was totally okay with that. It's very comfortable and although she likely talks about the same things with everyone, I enjoyed the banter. I had to laugh a few times because she liked to get feedback on the results as she went, making sure I was okay and approved of her handiwork. She takes a bit longer (I think that perhaps all the girls there wax in smaller sections..? Or maybe my past technicians just really slathered it on..) but she's great at gauging when I'm expecting a rip and about to tense up.
As I stated before, I was using a Lifebooker deal for my waxes but it is my understanding that they are very reasonable otherwise -- $40 for Brazilian and $25 for a good Deep Bikini. I would gladly pay that. For the last few years, I've been paying anywhere from $55-75 at some pretty well known spots and my experience at Red & White Spa has been just as pleasant if not more so.
Do note that tips are only accepted in cash -- I think this is pretty standard but I have a horrible habit of not allowing time for an ATM stop beforehand. There's an ATM at the Asian market next door but I despise paying the fee and end up running to the Chase on Broadway.
I realize getting a wax is a very personal experience -- not only because you're getting your pubes ripped out, but because people handle pain very differently. If you know what to expect, I would almost guarantee you would have a positive experience here. I am very pleased to have tried them and don't see myself ever going back to the other salon/spas I had frequented.
