Best color - 'cept for the sun :) 3/19/2008

What a cute place :) I love the tan I get there, and I love the candy they have in a little dish on the table. Portofino is so friendly and fun - I go there not only for the color, but to gab with the girls at the counter. They always have some funny story about a celeb tanning there or tight security on 57th street because some politician wants to dine at Nobu across the street! I'm a beach bunny in the summer time, but this tanning center gets me through the winter months. The one thing that stinks is that they don't have those cute little heart stickers to show your tan! Oh well - I guess I need to outgrow that phase at some point, huh? Good salon, adorable set up :) more

Convienient location 3/19/2008

If you work in midtown, Portofino Tanning is basically your only option for indoor baking. Luckily, this place delivers. I work across the street and watched as they opened this store, hoping it would be better than the kinda dingy place I go across town. It IS. I go on my lunch break, use a 12 minute bed, and am back at work without anyone really noticing I was gone. They do single tans, packages, mostly normal stuff no surprises. Now that I'm hooked on online reviews, I thought I'd give my neighbor a shout out - and save all my midtown buddies the job of looking for a midtown tanner. Portofino is the only one. AWESOME TAN 3/19/2008

Portofino has reallllllly good beds and they are super cheap. Their low end beds are like other places' high end beds. You can do stand up machines for $10 - and they are stroooong. I never use lotion but the guy at the desk suggested that I try one just once to see if it makes a difference. I stand corrected cuz it was the darkest I have ever gotten. I know they have other locations too, like all over the city. more

A fan of their Airbrush 3/17/2008

just got back from a wedding this weekend and my spray tan got me through my champagne-colored bridesmaid dress dilemma. i was planning to come in 2 weeks before to tan, but i was too swamped with work to make it. at the last minute i decided to try the spray tan and I am so glad i did. the dress i had to wear would have looked terrible with my pasty pale skin. I was in and out within half an hour and it lasted through the whole weekend of events. to anyone in a bind--the spray is the way to go. Pros: spray tan more

As a model, I need to tan every now and then for gigs and I've been going to Portofino for years. My agent first sent me to the one in Soho and now my home base is 5th Ave. After getting hooked up with discounts on packages, I had to return the favor and spread the word. This tanning salon is fabulous! ...clean rooms, great tanning, fun employees and close to Bergdorf-what more could you ask for? Cheers Portofino--you are my fav. great new tanning spot 3/16/2008

I grew up in Miami and ever since I moved to the city I been relying on tanning salons to keep me tan and happy. My family just moved to midtown and this tanning place is fantastic. I've been in them all, from corny cheap hole in the wall spots to the pricey pretentious salons in LA. Portofino ranks right up there with the best. It is posh without being pretentious. I have been using a couple different beds, but my favorite is their mattress tanning bed. I haven't seen this kind before. I lay on a mattress, flip half way through and get a chance to breathe, relax and escape from the city bustle for a bit. Their prices are reasonable, the staff has been consistently friendly, and space es beautiful. I''m happy to give Portofino my recommendation. Great find 3/15/2008

I actually found this place from citysearch. It seemed to get good reviews so I stopped by the other night to try it. I printed a coupon off of their website and got a buy 1 get 1 free. I was surprised that going twice actually gave me a decent tan. The store was clean, had nice decor for a tanning salon, and the girl at the desk was a sweetheart. Great tan, Airbrush available too 3/15/2008

I love the tan I get from the tanning beds at this place, but I wanted a little extra something for my wedding last weekend. It was a small ceremony, no big deal, but I wanted to be dark in that white dress. I asked the girl that usually puts me in the machines if she recommended the airbrush for this event, and she told me that half of her clients are brides! I had a personally applied airbrush applied by Valeria - it was only $55 and worth every penny. Now I'm in post wedding bliss, rehashing on what went right (nothing went wrong!) and my girlfriends told me to write a review on here for good karma :) Thanks so much Portofino! more

AWESOME TAN 3/15/2008

I got really great color from this place. If you go, be prepared to buy a package. The single sessions are expensive - the packages, not so much! I got a package of 26 standups - and they're like, $9 each. That's cheap for NY tanning, I think. My color was really good, even from just one session. They have phones in every room - this cracked me up. Its actually so that you can call the girl at the front desk if you have a problem, instead of like, walking out of your room half dressed. Very new, very fancy. For $9, I thought I got way more than my money's worth. more

Portofino Sun + Manhattan Laser Hair Removal 3/15/2008

Okay so it was my surprise when I got to my laser hair removal treatment appointment and found a brand new fancy tanning salon right next door! I had time to spare, so I did both. Make sure you ASK before you do this (they may tell you to space out the hair removal and tanning if you've never done it before) but if Manhattan Laser gives you the go ahead, do it. This is the best tanning experience I've had. Relaxing and gave me good results. They have a lot of beds so I didn't even have to wait. more

Newest location is NICEST location 3/15/2008

A long time customer of Portofino, I couldn't wait for this midtown location to open. I've been splitting my time tanning between the two 3rd Avenue locations, but since I live on 56th, neither one was really too convienient. Then this hot spot opened! While each Portofino is a little different, this one is by far the most impressive. With huge floor to ceiling windows in the lobby and cool antiquey furniture, I wasn't surprised when I looked up from the couch I was waiting on to an incredible ceiling painting. Tons of space, a warm waiting area with candy, water, tea, and magazines --- I didn't really even want to leave the lobby when my appointment time came up! Then it only got better as I went down the hallway to my tanning bed. There are PAINTINGS on the ways, a marble set of bathrooms, and neat clean brand new machines. My tan was great, always is at any location, but my experience was worth talking about with my girlfriends over dinner that night! more

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAA yahhhhhs! Portofino has tha mad tans. 10 stand UPS for 10 dollahs a pop Get tha Sun Dazzler it got me mad tan. I tan real good and this store made me so tan for ma sista's sweet sixteen. They dont let ya use oil so buy the dark SE*Y lotion to make ya broooown. more

Quality Spray Tan 3/14/2008

I work next door to this place at Bergdorf and have been recommending it for airbrush nonstop since I had mine done last week. You have no idea how many clients I get who are interested in the airbrush tan - and now I have a really great place to recommend. Portofino gives you great color without streaking and also sells any products you might want for upkeep. I work in cosmetics but I buy their "tan extender", designed for the airbrush tan. It's a moisturizer with some of the actual airbrush solution mixed in that you can use to keep your airbrush days longer than the typical week. Thanks for my airbrush, Portofino! Best Tanning Machines 3/14/2008

This place is awesome. Highly recommended. I've gone three times now and I am as brown as I get. Instead of having like, five of the same bed, Portofino has nine or ten different beds. I just tell them what I want THAT DAY, and they recommend the machine that will give me the desired result. The first time I tanned, I was whiiiiiite, so I started off in a machine that would get the process started. The next time, I was moved to a machine that works slightly differently - one that was designed to follow up the first session. Today, my third time, I was given the choice to either move up the minutes of my last bed, or go on to a third bed. Its awesome. So far, no red, only brown. Ask the staff for their advice and they'll give it to you. Better machines than I've seen at other NY tanning salons. Pros: New tanning machines Cons: Popular more

I'm not one to write reviews, but they suggested that if I liked tanning there, I could help them out and share my experience. To be honest, the place is great. The staff is smiling and friendly. I get tan from their standing machine and I don't burn. I would recommend Portafino to anyone wanting a tan. Pros: good service, good tanning more

Highly Recommended 3/13/2008

This store is hard to find-on my first visit I had to call about 4 times to get help finding my way. I was quite embarrassed but, every time I called, the girl on the phone was so patient and friendly. Once I finally got there I was pampered! They gave me a tour of the store, took the time to explain the machines and lotions and set me up with a sale on my package. The room was spacious, clean, and had googles waiting for me. I never felt rushed or out of place. Sure, it's only a tanning salon, but it is nice to have great service from start to finish anywhere in the city. Pros: service Cons: difficult to find more

great for getting ready for vacation 3/8/2008

This place is exactly what I was looking for. I'm very pale and not used to tanning, but I didn't want to burn on vacation. I went there to get a base tan before i left. I went in about 2 weeks before I left, the girl set me up with a small package, a lotion, and after 5 times I was actually pretty tan. The people were friendly, the rooms were clean and always had towels and googles for me. Overall-two thumbs up from me Pros: great tanning results more

I'm a new customer and have never written a review here before, but the staff working there was so nice and mentioned that if i was happy with my experience i could return the favor and write a review. It looks like the other reviews nailed it--Portofino really is great. The entire store is new and clean, the service is friendly, and tanning results are excellent. Ode to my Airbrusher 3/2/2008

Dear dark short-haired airbrush girl (I'm sorry I don't remember your name!!) You made my birthday week!! I was nervous to get an airbrush, but my friends convinced me to do it and I looked SO hot and tan on my birthday night. Thank youuuu!! Cute and Classy! 3/2/2008

I moved to midtown and changed tanning salons in the process. I'm used to tacky muscle men posters and tasteless decor, but I was pleasantly surprised with this new place. The people at the desk are so bubbly and helpful and the atmosphere is classy and clean--a welcome change for my previous spot. I can stand tanning with tacky posters, but I much prefer the peaceful, upscale ambiance at Portofino. Pros: ambiance, great staff Cons: can't think of any more
