Planet Rose blows 10/15/2010

If you're looking for karaoke in the city, do not go to Planet Rose. The service there was some of the worst I've ever expierenced. It took 15 minutes for my crew to get the bartenders attention. The bartender had no sense of urgency even though the cramped room was standing room only. The karaoke music selection was quite vast, however the wait to sing was about an hour. The kj finally called my name after I flagged him down and tipped him. I started singing and this annoying drunk guy, who I assume is a regular, decided to sing with me. Thankfully the mic was wireless so I was able to walk away. Luckily I was able to find another spot three blocks down the same street. more

Best bar in the entire city 8/28/2009

My boyfriend and I have been going to Planet Rose for almost 2 years now and we have yet to find a karaoke bar equal to it. We always bring our friends, have large parties here, and every time its a blast. The owners are wonderful people who take the time to get to know their "locals", but are still kind to new people. I have yet to experience them being "rude" to anyone and we've been going there forever! The sound equipment is great, so often microphones are horrible and you can never hear yourself in karaoke bars, but this bar has top notch equipment and about a million songs. We love the bartenders and go out to this bar every chance we can get. In addition, Artichoke pizza is nearby, so it is sure to be a fun night out!! I recommend Planet Rose for a date, group of friends, or party at anytime! Pros: Amazing bartenders, great location, excellent sound Cons: None more

Cool bar, great staff 5/26/2009

Had a great night here with my girlfriends at a bachelorette party. The host Collin was super nice. Great drink prices and you can sing mutiple times. We had a blast and will definitely go back. Pros: Cool staff, fun times more

This place is horrible! 12/27/2008

I paid $2. for a song, had 3 drinks, waited 2 hours and never got to sing. I saw people come in well after me sing before I got up. I saw several people sing 2 and 3 times. I eventually got my $2. back and left. I will never step foot in this dump again. Pros: They give you your money back when you leave in disgust. Cons: Everything else. more

Smells like feet, Nasty karaoke DJ, one nice Bartender 8/9/2008

When you walk in Planet Rose, don't be put off but the odd layout, leopard print carpet, or zebra couches. That's just the charm of Stuy-town, right? WRONG. The carpet makes the whole front of the bar smell like wet feet or as one friend put it, "The bathroom at a public pool." It also makes you not want to ever touch the couches. The layout is perplexing and getting a drink is much more difficult than it should be. Because the clientele is after-work suits and ties who drunkenly scream "All By Myself" into the microphone, you really have to get a lot closer to them than you probably should or would normally want to, just to get a drink. Finally, the karaoke DJ, whatever his name is, does not manage songs well, and is rude to boot! We put songs in at 915 and by 1130 they hadn't played. He offered minimal excuse-- it was frustrating when you know that your song was bumped down for his friends or some inside event. Bright spot- Sophia was a great bartender. If you go, get a seat at the bar, go early, and find some way to get in with the karaoke guy. Oh, and bring some noseplugs and Purel. Pros: One good bartender Cons: Bad karaoke, Awful post-work suits and ties, smells like feet more

Awesome Place To Rock Out the Tunes 5/20/2008

Good times! 2/26/2008

Planet Rose is hands-down the funnest karaoke bar in the city, with superfriendly bartenders and regulars, and strong-ass drinks! The floating microphone makes it more comfortable to sing if you're on the shy side, and lets you work the room if you're not. Sunday and weeknights are my favorite. If you go on a weekend night it's a good idea to try to get there and get your songs in early (cause do the math, there can only be 12 or so songs an hour); it's less crowded earlier, and during happy hour (when drinks are half-price), so you're the star of the show -- and songs are free. I heart Planet Rose! Pros: Friendly, fun atmosphere; great hook-up spot; awesome karaoke song selection. Cons: None! more

Same experience with ridiculous wait for songs to come up 11/16/2007

I used to love this place, but the last few times, I've noticed the same thing that other reviewers here did, that for some reason the song programmer was reshuffling the order of the songs. At one point I saw that I was #15. When I checked again 10 songs later, I was at #11!!! How does that happen. Watch him, you will see him put brand new requests halfway in the cue, instead of at the end. What's ironic is that my friends and I might have stayed well into the wee hours if our songs had come up in the order they were requested. But we got frustrated, took our money back and left, having only bought a few drinks. Whatever the business consideration is for this bizarre practice, what's certain is that neither I nor any of my friends are ever going back there. Pros: Great atmosphere, song selection, decent soundsystem and the bartender/drinks are pretty good Cons: As described, you will grow old and die before your song comes up more

Planet Rose = Karaoke Good Times 10/20/2007

There's no way you can not have a good time at Planet Rose. The bar staff and owners are extremely friendly and accomodating. The official KJ is friendly and responsive and ultimately fair. The karaoke starts as early as you want it to start with big crowds after 10 PM. Yes, you will wait a little while to sing during peak time -- but this is New York people. There's a lot of people here for a reason -- it's a fun laid-back place. If you hate crowds so much, stay home and sing in your apartment. Ohh yeah, and the sound is really good too! Pros: bar staff, drinks, karaoke Cons: if you hate fun crowds, dont come here lol more

TWO DOLLARS PER SONG?? LOL !! 10/15/2007

I came to Planet Rose by myself a couple of weekends ago. The ambience is nice and dark, funky, laid-back, and the drinks weren't badly priced for NYC standards. The bartender was an adorable petite girl with black hair (beautiful) and this had the makings of a wonderful evening. Then I handed the KJ my song slip and you know what he said? "That's two dollars.". LOL!!! I swear to god, I thought this was a scene from Better off Dead. TWO DOLLARS!! So let me get this straight: you charge 4+ dollars for a bottle of domestic beer, much more for shots, and yet the owner can not afford to pay the KJ so you have to charge two dollars per song? And you have to wait an eternity to sing? Even Second on Second, a true venue for karaoke, charges "only" $1.00 per song. I'll never go to either again. I didn't say anything. I just said I'd get it out of my jacket, paid my tab, said goodbye to the adorable bartender, and left. TWO DOLLARS.. absolutely hysterical. Pros: gorgeous black haired bartender Cons: two dollars per song to sing -- LOLLLLLL more

The Best Bartenders! A Great Night Out! Cool Vibe and Crowd! 9/26/2007

This is not your regular karaoke bar. This place Rocks! It's like one big party. The crowd is friendly and the bartenders sing along with you. Whatever you sing, however you sing it, it all good. They even have buy one get one free happy hour with ping pong! How cool is that? Pros: Bartenders, drinks, price, crowd, location, EVERYTHING. more

over-rated and expensive. Rude staff. 4/18/2007

I would NOT recommend wasting your money here. At $2 per song you would think that they would play them in the proper order, but the last time i was there i continually saw the karaoke guy shuffle my songs farther and farther back. My next song went from 7 songs back to 9 in 5 minutes, I took note of the song order before buying a drink and after waiting at the bar they had changed. When I confronted the guy he acted like he had no idea what I was talking about. This happened both times I came to here. Perhaps this is a ploy to keep customers waiting longer in the hopes that they will buy more $6 bottles of beer. At least they could have draft beer, whose larger size could help justify the exorbitant prices. Both times I was there there people had things stolen from unattended purses or coats. The second time it was people that i was with. When I alerted the bartenders to this they showed no interest. When asked about the surveillance cameras in the corners of the room, they first denied their existence, then after I pointed them out the staff, they claimed that they did not work. We called the next day and spoke to the manager, he gave us the same story, and had a total lack of sympathy or interest. Pros: None Cons: Expensive, unresponsive staff more

different from any karaoke bar 3/23/2007

first off, i just want to say i enjoyed the setup simply because it didn't feel like a karaoke bar. it was designed in a way to make you feel like you were just performing in your living room. the bar was almost out of sight from the lounge area, which made it seem like a laid-back night at a friend's. the lounge was furnished with zebra print couches and small knee level tables (which aren't that great around drunken crowd actually). the monitors were set up throughout the lounge near the ceiling, so the performer wasn't facing any particular way. it's great for those shy singers or first time karaoke people. prices on beer were average, to be expected, not cheap but not expensive either. the only drawback is its size. it is incredibly small and tends to be overcrowded. Pros: twist on traditional karaoke set up Cons: too small more

Grungy yet cool Karaoke! 3/13/2007

Had so much fun here.Got to sing all my songs like the true rockstar I am. Service was really fun.And the boys behind the bar can really sing too! Pros: Cheap drinks Cons: Huge drinks more

Oi! Oi! Oi! 9/11/2006

Warning: The consumption of alcohol may cause you to think you can sing. Fabulous fun with wonderful amazing people. If you really want to sing without a long wait, show up before 10pm. The songs are listed on a first come first serve basis, which is only fair. Why should I have to wait forever because you came late to the party? However, if you put in more than one song at a time they will space your songs out so that you are not singing back to back. The crowds are friendly, applauding for the horrible as well as the sublime. A great mix of bar regulars and one night stands. Mixed drinks tend to be strong, so pace yourself. Pros: Lots of fun, Great people, good drinks Cons: gets crowded which can result in a long wait for the mic more

When can I sing?!!! 8/24/2006

I was at Planet Rose the same night as the last reviewer and have a much different opinion of the experience. I was with a group of people celebrating a birthday - apparently there was another group of people there celebrating a birthday and they were the only ones who actually got to sing all the songs they requested. The birthday party I was in had to wait 2 hours to sing one song! I've heard of crowded but that's ridiculous. To make matters worse, the bartender kept singing songs?! Maybe if she sang less songs and poured more drinks, the mic could be evenly distributed amongst patrons. The first come first serve singing order is just not fair when parties sing twelve songs in a row. God Awful experience... Pros: Great place to hear a bartender sing Cons: Terrible place if you actually want to sing more

Best Karaoke in the City!! 7/19/2006

I went to Planet Rose last night and had a blast! As you walk in, the bar is on the right and the area in front of the bar is narrow, then the bar opens up into a large "living room" with zebra printed couches on the perimeter of a square room, with round coffee tables in front to hold drinks. There are small tv's in the ceiling corners so you can either sing from your seat or stand and walk around a bit in the room. The song selection is the best I've found in the City, with a very substantial show-tune section, and new additions sheets fitted in. The crowd last night was young, energetic, and fun! They were celebrating a friend's birthday. The female bartender kept the bar lively, singing herself, and blew fire from her mouth to entertain the crowd. The bar was crowded but smallish so the wait to sing was not long. Planet Rose offers a free song with the first drink, which were $7 each last night. After that, songs are $2 each. I was reluctant to post this review for fear of adding to the crowds but Planet Rose earned it. [As an aside, the Mexican restaurant across the street serves excellent fresh, homemade guacamole, made at your table.] Pros: Great song selection; decent sound system; hip crowd; fun, positive atmosphere Cons: $2 songs more

Owner Message
  • This karaoke hideaway has that small, local charm to it, even though the yards of animal-print upholstery doesn't exactly scream down to earth. Speaking of screaming, the karaoke scene at Planet Rose is laidback, fun, and all-inclusive, even the bartenders get involved. The brave, or more likely, drunk, performers don't even have to leave their barstool, the bartender will bring the wireless mic to the singer. (Talk about the diva treatment.) If bartender Missy is around she'll make you her signature flaming shot, which is appropriately called "Missy Likes to Set Things on Fire." Planet Rose is all around a fun place to hang out with friends or host a party. By the end of the night, the leopard print will grow on you, as will the guy singing show tunes. Then again, that's probably just the liquor speaking. - Shecky's Review

Editorial
  • The Scene
Past the steel-doored exterior displaying a large red velvet rose, a sense of departure sinks in. It could be the bar's windowless design and lair of zebra-print couches, the blond belting out "Physical" on the mic or just a profusion of rabbit ears (if Scotty the Blue Bunny's in the house). Lyric monitors keep eyes aimed high, though the promise of fleeting inhibitions and impending group bonding is palpable.

    The Draw
Guests tend to gather in the later hours, since karaoke usually works best with a slightly drunk clientele. (Mixed drinks are very reasonably priced.) Early in the night, the sparsely populated room has an air of Berlin decadence fused with Tokyo pop and American cheese. Hipsterish East Village patrons show their game side on the mobile microphone, boosted by the participation of rousing bartenders.
