Great food, bad service.... :( more

worst host service 8/18/2008

first and for most, when me and my friend entered the restaurant, the very rude host came to us. later we firgured that he was the Manager of the restaurant. He made us stand by the door for half and hour. told us that we have to wait by the door or won't get any good service. through out the meal, threatened us to leave the restaurant. one of the most horrible restaurant experience ever!!!! watch out for the manager. (has long hair and googly eyes and rude expression) Pros: small resturant Cons: terrible rude manager more

Decent food; terrible service 6/25/2008

We reserved a lunch at 1:45, and were immediately informed that there was no time for delay on our order. The waitress hovered over us to ensure that we order at once. Then we were told that the appetizers and main course would be presented together, so we could watch the rest of our meal grow cold as we ate. more

Soups and Noodles, take me there again! 4/27/2008

I used to like Vietnamese food in general, after eating at Nam I fell in love with it. Last time I had the sauteed chicken with the lemongrass sauce, which was amazing. Pros: Good soups, good noodles, good food! more

Dressed up Vietnamese gone awry 7/5/2007

I went here for lunch with a group today. My first impression of the place was positive. This is the most upscale I've ever seen for a Vietnamese place downtown. The food, however, needs work. I went blind, not having read anything about it, so I was expecting your typical pho dishes and the like. The entrees all sounded creatively good, and I ordered the chicken in coconut curry with yams and eggplant. The first bite told me it was too salty. Someone else in the group ordered the same meal and agreed. The portion was fine, but the sauce that covered the dish was too much. I couldn't finish it and had to gulp down lots of rice and water just to cut down on the salt! Another in our group ordered the lemongrass chicken rice dish and that one was also a disappointment. He said it wasn't that tasty. Pros: Nice modern decor Cons: Most at our table didn't like our dishes more

Hidden jewel of the city 1/28/2007

I loved this place, and I'm not the kind to gush. Actually, I was a little skeptical at first. My date suggested we check it out before the cabriolet show she had planned. I usually make the arrangements but had handed the baton to her just this once, and I wasn't sure if I could trust her choices in these things. But now not only do I think she's a virtuoso dinner planner, but in the process we've found a place that we'll return to many times over! The atmosphere was very romantic. I think it really helped loosen her up (she's usually quite uptight!). But after the starter martinis, I think she could let down her hair. We had a cozy corner table, and I liked overlooking the rest of the restaurant. The crowd was hip and trendy, and the other diners were dressed in smart casual (my date insisted that I not look too formal!). The food was divine. The waiters took good care of us and kept the drinks and plates coming. My date and I absolutely loved it. At the end, she told me I needed to eat a larger portion of the desserts because she didn't want to put on too many pounds! I said you don't have to twist my arm, and you can let me watch your figure! :-) Pros: Food was delicious and authentic. Romance was in the air. Cons: None whatsoever! more

The food is decent. The service was 10/28/2006

The food is decent. The service was very good for the first ten minutes and, after we moved a chair, we got insulted for over 10 minutes and felt physically threatened by one of the employees. Nobody came to apologize. A disaster. Pros: cheap Cons: worst service in NY more

Great Place 3/1/2005

I love Nam, the food is fantastic and the staff is ultra-nice and very very friendly/attentative. The only drag is the space is a little limited and the crowd tends to be a little older, late 30s. Pros: Food, Service Cons: Older Crowd more

No, this is not it... 9/17/2004

Our server was fine, but the mood was spoiled by an dreadfully unattentive host. Our reserved table was set-up and ready when we arrived, yet he made us wait for over a half hour before he seated us. He kept on saying to give him a minute, but all he was doing was running around the room with a clipboard and rearranging the same 3 tables over and over again, obviously just trying to look busy. He told us to wait at the bar, unfortunately they do not really have a bar, only a tiny service bar next to the kitchen entrance. The food was average, it's hard to go wrong with good ingredients and tangy sauces, but there was nothing special or inventive. There are Vietnamese places in Chinatown that do just as well, even better, and for a lot less money and with a lot less attitude. Pros: fresh ingredients Cons: , cramped, too noisy more

New type Fusion 8/22/2004

Great atmosphere, and ordinary food. Nice try of mixing Vienamise cuisine and continental, although, not quite ""fused"" well. Good looking waiters w/ below average service. Could be good for date, but not your fist date. Pros: Great Atmosphere, Crowded, Pretty decoration Cons: , Bit Pricey... more

Worst Service Experience 6/6/2004

Wait staff was unattentive; service was slow and noone checked on us throughout the entire dinner. In the middle of dessert, the waitress silently passes by and drops the check. We speak to the manager about the terrible service and laying down the check before we were done with dinner. The manager replies, ""It's what we do. It's a high volume restaurant where we need to turn the tables quickly."" Unless you want to be treated like a revolving door, don't come here. Admittedly the food is flavorful and enjoyable, but I left in the end with a bitter taste--and for the first time in my dining experience, left no tip. Pros: Decor, Inexpensive Cons: , Terrible wait staff more

Loved it! 2/6/2004

My boyfriend and I have been to Nam twice and we absolutely loved it! The soft glow of the lights, the bamboo wall, and the coziness of the room made for a very amiable setting. The food was delicious and the portions were perfect, not too big and not too small, contrary to what others have written. Also, all of our food arrived steaming hot and in a timely fashion (we HATE to be rushed, but we don't want to starve, either!). The prices were also quite reasonable, including prices for the wine. We also received wonderful service both times. The servers were friendly and pleasant, but not obtrusive. They were also knowledgeable and made great wine reccomendations. We will definetly be back! Pros: great food, great service, nice atmosphere more

excellent food, a bit noisy, waiters ok 10/20/2003

I've been to NAM twice, and both times the food was delightful. However, the music is a bit too loud and it can be difficult to have a conversation. The waitstaff is friendly but butts in, brings new dishes before we're finished with the old ones, and is hard to find when we want the check. Nevertheless, this is quite a delightful place and I intend to go back again. Pros: food quality, soothing decor, great location Cons: noise level, awkward waiters more

Deeelicious! 5/27/2003

Great food and great value - the food was fun, different, and quite tasty and when the check arrived it was a pleasure. more

An elegant alternative 3/5/2003

An elegant room with great lighting and style. Its a good alternative for those scared of Ctown dives. But didn't the designer go downstairs to the bathroom? It was is if they ran out of money abd left a saloon's restroom in the basement, and I can tell the cleaning staff hadn't ventured there in some time. The manager/maitre'd was pleasant and efficient, Unfortunately, our waiter could not have been less interested in his job or the experience of his guests. Stick with the cocktails (the lychee martini and the NAM cocktail were both good), but the wine list is innapropriate for the cuisine - bad choices across the board. The food was wonderful, with clean, bright, and focused flavors. It is some of the best Vietnamese in town. Pros: beautiful room, wonderful food, reasonably priced Cons: indifferent service, tight spacing more

Great bargain 2/24/2003

For the money you pay and the ambience and service you get, Nam is one of the best deals in town. The food is very good, with certain unique dishes (such as the shrimp dumplings). Some dishes have a ""Chinese take-out"" style about them, however. The wine list is small, but adequate for the food - stick to the whites. Cocktails should be avoided. Definitely worth a visit. Pros: Value, Ambience, Service Cons: Food is hit or miss more

Vegetarians Beware!! 11/13/2002

An otherwise fine meal was trashed when i realized that the dish i had ordered contained chicked, despite my asking for no chicken, no pork twice. OK, so anyone can make a mistake, but it would've been nice to have it comped and to not have the waiter ask me ""do you want to take that home?"" tacky: service, and the manager had worse attitude. like their food is good enough for them to affect attitude. Pros: decent food, prices swell Cons: snotty attitude, poor management, Kitchen sloppy more

Not worth hype-but not altogether bad 10/31/2002

Went to Nam last night. Didn't understand poor service ratings from other respondents. Our waiter was sufficiently good. Food was decent. Red snapper was good. However, this food can be had in Chinatown for a lower price. If atmosphere is more important to you, check this place out. If not, save your money and goto greasy outposts in Chinatown. Pros: good food, good service, nice environ Cons: overpriced, crowded tables, small portions more

Great food for the price 10/29/2002

Nam is a great place for tasty food that won't set you back. 2 people can easily have 2-3 appetizers, 2 entrees and a bottle of wine for under $100. I wouldn't go for the tasting menu because that is not what they are best for. Focus on their regular menu and you can't go wrong. Eat family style. You'll have a really nice meal for a very good price, and the atmosphere is really nice too. We'll definitely go back. I'd skip the desserts, they don't warrant the high price tag. You're best off getting another entree. Definitely worth the visit. more

AMAZING 10/11/2002

AMAZING food, great service, can be crowded so make a reservation, but great wine list, fabulous food and great deserts for a great price. an amazing find in tribeca. more
