Somewhere in between the tens and the ones we found the truth about Fish Camp. We have been hitting the Best of List candidates and although we prefer another local lobster shack,...

Garbage 1/27/2012

Noisy, dingy, and cramp little hole-in-the-wall with rude and absent service and a comically overpriced menu. It's a shame I have to give it a star. To top it all off, I wouldn't recommend the food to anyone. Wish I could get that hour of my life back more

Crowded, overpriced. 6/16/2011

Overcrowded. You know something?s wrong when the tables are so close that they need to be pulled into the center of the room to get up. Good if you want to hear every word of your neighbor?s conversation though. They only reason people wait in line is because it?s in a cool neighborhood. Overpriced. $30 for a lobster roll? And with tables jammed so close are they are paying high rent or could it be that we sense certain greed and arrogance? Safety. My girlfriend?s $600 cashmere shawl was damaged by a space heater temporarily placed in the exact spot the host directed me to leave our personal effects. If our dinner had lasted longer the shawl could have set on fire and sent the dozens of customers in the over capacity space climbing over tables to get to the single exit. Arrogance. Despite our complaint, the owner Mary Redding failed to attempt any reasonable repair to the damage. She expressed no concern about our strong dissatisfaction about the damage itself and about the way she has been treating us as customers. more

Best lobster roll 5/28/2010

I love Mary's! We always end up wandering over here in the summer when waiting on the line isn't so bad in good weather. Before it opens, there is always a line of people outside waiting to get in, but it's definitely worth the wait. Inside is a cozy fish shack with a few tables and seats at the bar to eat, and we prefer the bar. We usually split a few things- but the lobster roll is the staple we absolutely love. Its fresh, flavorful and a nice size. We also like their wine selection and desserts. Great, laid back atmosphere with yummy food. Pros: Food Cons: no resies, long lines more

Really???? 12/5/2009

I was there last week with my girlfriend, we sat at the bar and ordered the Lobster Knuckles, Oysters, French Lentils and a Whole Black Bass. Lobster excellent, oysters excellent, lentils excellent (however, we asked the server what the green was in the salad and she said it was parsley when we were thinking it was either Kale or Collards - it was Kale...like really parsley) The disaster arrived with the fish, it was practically raw - we told our server after filleting the fish completely and she took the fish back - no apologizes - we sat patiently waiting (thinking we were going to get a entirely new fish) NO the same fish came back, entirely mutilated, and VERY over cooked. You are a fish restaurant and you can not cook fish properly? In these rough economic times you expect the restaurant of this size to take the extra effort to accommodate their guests, there was no apology nothing. The Chef is standing arms distance from us and she did not even acknowledge that the kitchen screwed up. A simple apology would have made a world of difference, you are a Fish restaurant in a quaint space, the patrons expects more from the staff and chef. We love good food and will give them another chance, but I will not recommend this to a friend until we return and have a good experience. Pros: Lobster Knuckles Cons: Whole Fish more

Go Mary!! 1/22/2009

I love it! I go here so often, always delicious and friendly. Best lobster roll in NYC! The shrimp tacos are soooooo good! Great wine list, deserts and everything is fresh! Pros: Everything Cons: Hard to get a table at night more

Um, excuse me? 12/30/2008

This place was a big disappointment, mostly because of the rude service. We had to wait over an hour to be seated, of course, and by the time we ordered they were out of lobster rolls. Whatever- that's not such a big deal. What was astounding was that they asked the couple next to us to LEAVE while they were drinking their coffee (you should have seen the looks on their faces). Then, minutes after we signed the credit card slip and received our cappuccinos, they did the same to US! I looked at the door, expecting to see a line around the corner, but there were only 2 people waiting for a table (it was pretty late). Pros: A place that was trendy, like 2 years ago, so of course it makes you feel really super-cool... Cons: ...until they kick you out while you're drinking coffee. more

always fresh seafood 12/2/2008

This is one of my all time favorite places to eat. Each time I have eaten there the food has been amazing. It is perfect for a date or a night with good friends. The fish dishes are tasty, fresh and presented beautifully. Everything from the service, decor, food and wine is tasteful a delight to the senses. Pros: seafood, service more

Poor service ruins an otherwise good meal 9/2/2008

That last review could have been written by me (I swear it wasn't!). I went to Mary's tonight. We arrived on the early side and were told by the very nice hostess that it would be about a twenty minute wait. We got a drink and waited on the bench outside. Eventually we got our table and proceeded to wait...and wait...and wait. Three tables that were seated after us had their orders taken first. Finally the waitress (dark hair, dark glasess) came over and rudely said ""Do you know what you want?"" as if she'd been waiting for us to make up our minds. She returned about five minutes later, dropped the food on our table and never came back again until she rushed us out the door when we had barely swallowed our last bite. Only when we were leaving, did we hear her telling others of the night's specials, how much the lobster roll cost that night, etc. We didn't get any of this. Pros: Good lobster roll Cons: Rude waitress more

Decent food; Poor waitstaff 8/23/2008

We ate here last night and aren't going to rush back anytime soon. Overall, the food is decent: good lobster rolls, fish is well prepared, oysters so-so. It's on par with a beach seafood house from somewhere like the Jersey shore (okay, a bit better--my wife says it's pretty good actually, and she's a foodie). Pros: Well prepared fish; good lobster rolls Cons: Waitress w/ dark hair & glasses is bad more

Best lobster roll in the city 4/5/2008

GREAT, fresh food and our server was friendly and helpful. Delicious mussels with fennel, conch soup was just OK (not much conch) but the lobster rolls were to die for. The guy sitting next to us even ordered four to go! Be ready to wait (ours was about 45 mins) but well worth it. Unlike anything else in the city. Pros: lobster rolls, fries, service Cons: no waiting area more

Tender morsels of tasty seafood 3/17/2008

Was just there last night, is just as the editorial review states it is PLUS extremely nice waitstaff, unheard of in ny levels of niceness. I was impressed by the food, having sampled the rich lump crab meat gratin and chunky, delish lobster roll. Thumbs up! Pros: relaxed vibe, friendly waitstaff, tasty food Cons: small & crowded more

Disappointing 12/18/2007

We'd heard such great things about Mary's Fish Camp and were very excited to try it. The Crab Au Gratin appetizer was excellent, but it was downhill from there. The Lobster Risotto was mushy and bland with rubbery lobster. The Montauk Skate was doused with so much lemon it was hard to taste anything else. Though I will say that the greens were good and the texture of the fish was excellent. The hot fudge sunday was embarrassing - not hot at all and tasted almost entirely of the peppermint candy cane crumbled into it. The wait staff was just fine (though they forgot to bring us coffee). more

Consistent on 2 things, very good lobster roll, really rude wait staff 6/5/2007

I have been to Mary's Fish Camp several times as I live in the neighborhood, just a mere 4 block away from the restaurant, and I can say the they have been consistent on 2 things. First, the lobster roll has always been good, second would be the service has always been rude and the waitress will talk down on you. After several years of going to this restaurant, I have just had it when I went this weekend. I had a $89 lunch bill for 2 persons, gave the waitress $120 so she could give me change so I could leave a $18 tip (20%). She only gave me back $11 change, when I told her (in a nice way) that I left $120, she remarked ""Oh I'm sorry, you wanted the $20 back?"" for everyone to hear. I just said yes, left the tip and exited quietly. I have never heard of the waitstaff deliberately not giving back the change to take as tip. That was the last straw from the rudeness of the wait staff that I will get and never again will I come back. Each time I went back in the past I hoped that I could get past the rudeness but, nope. I travel to New England often and nothing beats the lobster over there. more

A true ""jewel"" in West Village!! 5/22/2007

We wanted to head to the Greenwich Village area (West Village) to check it out & eat dinner. Did research to find just the right restaurant. Had 2 choices, Mary's won hands down! Came late, so no lines. Got a table right away. Food is excellent and worth the prices. Top quality seafood, great choices and unpretentious atmosphere with very knowledgeable staff. Simple, plain, very casual, great food! A must if you are in the area! www.marysfishcamp dot com. Pros: Excellent seafood, great selection of seafood items, knowledgeable waitstaff. Cons: Cramped quarters, long wait for tables at times. more

Give me a break. I love it. 3/19/2007

I loved my first visit to the fish-camp. I read the reviews and was worried that I may be in for a bad experience. Not so... We were greeted with chic attitude sans rudeness. Our food was nothing short of amazing. I had the crab sandwich and my B/F had something I normally would not have gone for, but I tried it and wished I had had it too. Our experience was that of a truly west village, intimate affair. For those of you looking for over the top, upper east side service, you should stay in your own neighborhood. Mary's fish camp is a real village experience and if you don't like it go home. Pros: in the neighborhood, good value, cute staff Cons: I can't get there everyday. more

Great service, delicious food + + + 3/19/2007

My boyfriend and I finally had the chance to check out this restaurant. We walked in and were seated immediately and we had 4-5 different fun happy people coming to check on us during our meal. I ordered the ""Montauk Skate fin"" (or filet?) that sounded really exotic?something definitely out of my ""safe zone."" The skate fin turned out to be a lemony, zesty dish that was an unforgettable taste experience. So good and so different! The prices were reasonable, and (as a west village resident) I am sick of cookie-cutter ""fancy"" restaurants?mary's really surprised me with its original taste and fun atmosphere! I can't wait to go back and try other menu items soon. Pros: unique flavors, cool service staff, location location location Cons: non-specific menu. more

turned away! 2/19/2007

I love Mary's Fish Camp. They have the greatest lobster roll that I have ever tasted. So, this past Saturday I decided to satisfy my craving and head over there. I arrived at 10pm and the hostess turned my friend and me away at the door saying that they were only open for another 55 minutes and had other tables waiting to be seated! What the hell kind of business is that? If you have a table willing to come in pay for appetizers, 25 bucks each for a lobster roll plus a bottle of wine and dessert, how can you possibly turn away that kind of business? Pros: lobster roll, fresh seafood Cons: turned away at door, rude hostess more

Flavorful Bouillabaise and Tasty Salt Crusted Shrimp 1/9/2007

My bf and I went to Mary's Fish Camp on a Tuesday night - we figured we had a better chance of getting seated w/o a long wait if we went earlier in the week - and we were right! We waited no more than 10 minutes and got great seats at the bar. The hostess was very friendly and recommended a decent bottle of white wine. The first dish we had was the salt crusted shrimp - seasoned to perfection! Then we had the fried clams and oysters - which were good, but the fried oysters I had at Pearl's definitely beat out these oysters. Then there was the Spicy Florida Conch Chowder - from my experience - chowder is thick, this was more like a broth. It really lacked any rich flavor - tasted like water w/ hot sauce...but maybe that's being too harsh. Let's just say, I wouldn't order it again. The grilled seabass was just ok (not as terrible as Pearl's), but not something to rave about or order again. The sides were what stood out - the grilled haricot verts, brussel sprouts w/ bacon, and the fries - all must tries! At this point, we were pretty full, but not quite satisfied. The two diners sitting to our left had the bouillabaise and were extremely happy with it - so we decided to give it a go. What a good call! The bouillabaise was so flavorful w/ fresh seafood (lobster, scallops, shrimp, mussels, clams, and squid). But then we ended w/ the hot fudge sundae - the peanut brittle was a nice touch, but the whipped cream and hot fudge were disappointing. A rollercoaster meal, but now I know what to get next time! Pros: Flavorful Bouillabaise and Salt Crusted Shrimp Cons: Grilled Sea Bass and Conch Chowder more
