Had a good time recently with some friends down at Armstrong's, but while the scene was okay, the trivia was sub-par. For a cleaner trivia night, try the Gael Pub up on E. 83rd St...

BEST TRIVIA NIGHT IN NYC 7/27/2010

I go to MJ Armstrongs at least a couple times a week, for the great brunch specials and dinner, but I never miss Tuesday night! Because that's when they hold their weekly Quiz night. I've been to other trivia nights at other bars in New York, but none compare to this one. Quizmaster Chris is probably one of the smartest guys in the city and he puts on a great show. So I suggest if you want to have a great time and be a little smarter for it, go to MJ Armstrong's Quiz Night, every Tuesday at 7:30PM! Pros: good fun, good people, Great quizmaster! more

My friends and I love this bar! 6/1/2010

I?ve been there a few times for a happy hour. It is so much fun, drinks are affotrable and the food is very good! Great bar food, laid back bar. I think MJ Armstrong?s is the equivalent of my neighborhood bar at home. I love the sliders and chicken nachos. I have also won the one of the happy hours and I had a great time! Free drinks for me, can?t complain about that. All my friends also got drink specials. We ended playing beer pong in their downstairs room. They also have tons of plasma TV?s, downstairs and upstairs so we were able to watch the basketball game. My friends and I will definitely go back! more

awesome bar! 2/2/2010

Where do I start? Well MJ Armstrong is almost like a speak easy bar, you have no idea is there but once you walk in you know there is definitely something going on. My first time there they had a western party, omg was it fun. We had a blast! My friends had won a great drink special party, so prices were terrific. Music was definitely a plus. The DJ was really nice and took a couple of requests for us. I have never been on top of the bar but that?s where we ended up lol. We had a terrific time and also won tickets to a baseball game. Mature and fun crowd. Tons of giveaways, affordable drink specials, great atmosphere and good people. We came back the following Sunday and found out they also have brunch, the food was excellent, service was ok. They also have a lot of TV?s; after all it is a sports bar. Overall we loved it and will definitely be back soon. Pros: drink specials, excellent food and good atmosphere more

rude bartenders, bad service 12/12/2009

This place is awful! They called my friend up and told him he won a happy hour. He would get free drinks from 6 to 8 pm, and his friends would get half off their drinks from 6-8 pm. The entire time we were there the bartenders would ignore us. We barely got any drinks. Which was stupid of them because if they had helped us out, we would have given them a great tip because we had saved so much money on drinks. Then we ordered spinach dip and chips for my friend, and they brought out the chips and forgot the spinach dip. We had to wait another ten minutes for the spinach dip when we had been waiting 15 minutes for the food already. They also have this awful loudspeaker where they make announcements in the bar as if all the people were cattle. This place is terrible. I will never go here again. Pros: nothing Cons: everything more

Never Again 8/20/2009

I went with my boyfriend to MJ Armstrongs tonight and they wouldn't let him in because he is 19. This is a pub AND restaurant, so I don't understand why. I wanted to have a beer with my dinner, and I wanted to have my boyfriend with me. It appalls me that I couldn't even go here with someone underage just to have a beer with my dinner. The service was terrible. I went in anyway without my boyfriend (just to see what it was like) and the waitress never came. I had to go to the bar to get myself a drink. I ordered a rum and coke and they gave me a coke with water. There was no alcohol in it. Not only did this place give me a terrible vibe from the get go, they didn't even try and redeem me with their service. This is the first review I have ever given because I feel so strongly about how terribly I was treated. I'm not telling you not to go there, but I'd definitely give yourself a second bar to check out since this one probably won't do it for you. Pros: Clean Cons: Terrible service, weak drinks, rude staff more

the worst place, ever. 8/20/2009

the bar is horrible. first, the service is horribly slow, and then my boyfriend isn't 21 and they didn't let him in. it is a bar and grill, he only wanted to come in and eat and he was denied so he left while i endured the horrible service inside. this bar was completely ridiculous and a complete waste of time. a horrible example of what the city is about. steer clear of this place! i was totally dissatisfied. the service was slow and rude. i would never recommend this place to anyone, ever! Pros: nothing Cons: everything more

AWFUL service super slow bartenders 5/3/2009

Came with a friend for a $25 open bar for 3 hours. Came with an hour left of the open bar thinking I could catch up with this deal. NO WAY. The bartenders were super slow. The two nasty girl bartenders would stop mid drink and dance (even though they couldn't) while the bar was lined up with people needing drinks. They would totally avoid the people with wristbands and get to them...never! The guy who was bartending thought he was so cool cause he could pop the bottle tops off by hitting the bottom which it took him about 5 minutes to do this ""trick"" with a packed bar of people needing drinks who didn't give a **** about this ""trick"". When my friends and I finally got fed up and decided the $25 wasn't even worth it we left and tried to find another bar in this area which everything was closed down before 1am. Lame and Lame. Pros: NOTHING Cons: Bartenders Location more

Great for drinks 10/28/2008

Heard of MJ Armstrong's through some work friends. Stopped last Friday when I was in the neighborhood and had one of the best nights. The bartenders were great and friendly. The drinks and the crowd were great. more

What a pleasant surprise! 6/11/2008

My friend and I recently stumbled in there for a quick bite, we were pleasantly surprised! The food was excellent! I am a fanatic for good hot wings, and this place had great ones! special 50 cents a wing, and they were delicious, not too spicy where you couldn't eat them but just enough that it tasted great. The nachos were piled high with all sorts of toppings and ground beef. Even the fish and chips were to die for. I will definitely be going back soon! I recommend this place to anyone who just wants great all american food. more

Top Shelf Hangout 8/22/2007

M.J. Armstrong's is like the Michael Jordan of bars and Neil Armstrong of restaurants, all wrapped up into one of the finest dining and drinking establishments in the Lower East Side. With friendly service and countless big screen T.V.'s broadcasting every noteworthy sporting event, you'll always find the experience both comfortable and entertaining. The food ranges from average in the worst case to absolutely delectable, with the simplest often being the most delicious. Try a hamburger and fries or chicken fingers and honey dijon, and you won't be disappointed. Wednesday Quiz Night, however, is anything but simple. Test your sharpest wits against Quiz Master Chris's 50 weekly inquiries. Correctly answer even half of these and you'll find yourself in contention for the oversized gift check, awarded each week to the champion. Come back and win a few more times to earn a free M.J. Armstrong's party! Without question, M.J. Armstrong's is a top shelf hangout for almost any occasion. Pros: Great Service, Countless T.V.'s, Wednesday Quiz Night, Delicious Food Options Cons: Only one Quiz Night per week more

Fun for everyone 8/22/2007

When I returned to New York for my first visit of 2008, the first place I wanted to go was corner of 19th and 1st. While quiz night has moved to Tuesday, not much else has changed, and Armstrong's is still my favorite bar in the city. While vodka martinis and a veggie burger will always have a special place in my heart, I may have found a new favorite meal. Now I can take advantage of Tuesday's beer special and throw down some cheap pints to go with my new favorite menu item - the grilled vegetable sandwich. My carniverous teammates were even wowed by the hot and tasty veggies on a delicious roll. This goes to show that everything on the menu at Armstrong's is worth trying. Pros: Great Tuesday Quiz Night, welcoming staff, friendly regular crowd more

Eat, drink, and be quizzed 8/21/2007

Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name. I've always wanted to be a regular at a bar like Cheers and feel the camaraderie and warmth of an oft-frequented haunt. And while they might not know your name at Armstrong's (they'll at least make one up for you if you go there long enough), they make newcomer and established barfly alike feel at home. The food (sandwiches, burgers, salads) may be typical bar fare, but it is served up to perfection. My particular favorites are the Cobb salad served with either the balsamic vinaigrette or the honey mustard dressing, the Mediterranean chicken sandwich, and the fries (crisp and thin). If you truly want to take advantage of all that Armstrong's has to offer, head on over on a Wednesday for Quiz Night where you are sure to meet the gregarious Quizmaster Chris, keeper of all knowledge unnecessary , esoteric, or just plain ""Who knows that?""-inducing. Be aware, Quiz Night is not for the ill-informed, but Chris's questions, involving everything from those irrascible co-eds on A Different World to 1950s baseball to world capitals (the capital of Lichtenstein isn't Lichtenstein City, for the record), will keep everyone involved and looking for a chance to be the team hero. However, even if your encyclopedic recollection falls short, it's worth it to grab some friends and head to Armstrong's to test your mettle and enjoy some good food, good beer, and good times. more

My h*mp day is all about MJ's 8/16/2007

That's right, when Wednesday's come around, I not only get happy it's almost Friday; but best of all I know that I will be at Armstrong's for it's great trivia night with the Quiz Master, Chris. It's a great place to go and hang out even if you don't do the trivia thing or if you want to just go grab some grub. I am in love with their cheeseburgers - something about a large english muffin for buns just does it for me. Defintely a place to check out and go out of the way on your trip home - I do it and I come in from Jersey then drive back to Jersey the same night. Pros: Trivia and Burgers Cons: A little stuffy on warm nights more

Great Quiz Night 8/1/2007

MJ Armstrong's has the best trivia night in New York. Quizmaster Chris scraps the pretense of some of the stuffier scenes and stumps the boisterous crowds week after week with categories like Sports, Music, Movie Stills, and New York History. The beer is cold and refreshing, the nachos are hot and heaping, and for some lighter fare, try the Iceberg Wedge. Just watch out for the Bob Loblaws. They know their stuff. Pros: Trivia more

Best place to be?especially on Wednesday nights 8/1/2007

MJ Armstrong?s has become one of my favorite spots in the city. You will have a good time here any night of the week, but if you are into trivia come on Wednesday nights at 8:00 with a group of friends. I have been to several bars in the city for trivia night, but MJ?s is definitely the best one. The trivia takes places in the party room downstairs, and the immortal Quiz Master Chris hosts it. I believe he is a supernatural being who only appears on Wednesday nights for trivia, but I could be wrong. Regardless, trivia night at MJ?s is a great place to be on those dreadful Wednesday nights. It is the only thing that gets me out of bed in the morning and prevents me from quitting my job every Wednesday. You will feel the same after you try it. Pros: Trivia on Wednesday; Specials every night; Sunday brunch Cons: They don?t use horseradish in Bloody Mary?s more

Great Sports Bar 7/26/2007

Went there the other night with a few friends to catch the Cubs game. They have the MLB Package so they get all of the games. Good beer specials, lots of beers on tap. 50 cent wings wich were BIG and SPICY! it is a very big bar/ restaurant with 2 projection screens and many smaller tv's. Surpisingly good food too. They also have a cool private party room in the basement with a pool table and darts which the waitress was nice enough to show me. Best sports bar I have been to in the gramercy/union square area. Pros: TV Packages for all sports/ multiple draft beer options/ great wings more
