Detail-oriented and focused stylists 9/28/2011

I had John do my keratin straightening system yesterday. He was very detail-oriented and focused, very precise also. As far as I can tell 1 day after he did a good job with both the treatment and the haircut. My only complaint is that in the afternoon after my treatment I got home with a very irritated sore throat. My only explanation is that's from the keratin treatment vapors while blowdrying and flat-ironing my hair. In addition, 3-4 other people around me were getting the same treatment. The other stylysts offered their clients a mask, while John didn't even offer me one. I liked the furniture of the salon. Some people worked on their laptops while having their hair done. However, I noticed a lot of tension between the people who worked there. They were not very friendly with each other. more

Lee is now here 1/29/2010

Lee is now at Le Salon Chinois so I, of course, had to move with her. Lee is still the best (she was at Ink) and this salon is even nicer than her former place. Plus the location is even more convenient. Lee is the best, most exacting and nicest stylist ever. She's even relaxed my hair, so I now have normal looking hair. Who knew that was even possible? Pros: Most precise stylist ever more

a must visit when in nyc 9/23/2009

I spend the whole day at this salon getting my brazillian straightening. It usually takes around 4-5 hrs. I might be there for 5 hrs but ill feel like im at home with my girlfriends hanging out. Everyone is friendly and caters to your needs. My hair looks amazing when i leave. They are so careful with their products that my hair does not feel, look, or gets damaged. I walk out of the salon feeling like a barbie doll!!! i highly recommend this salon to everyone Pros: hair colorist specialist and brazillian straightening more

An incredible deal 9/16/2009

I went here for Spa Week and got a typical $75+ hair cut for only $50. I had this awful dutch boy bob and Christina gave me a short 'do that looked fabulous. More than that I didn't even need to style it (I have awkward wavy hair) for it to look neat. It just dried and fell perfectly after showering. Minimal hair spray on the bangs and it looked like I had just walked out of the salon. With hair that's a bizarre combination of wavy, curly, and straight this was a godsend. More than that, I called and got an appointment for the SAME DAY at that morning. The receptionist was friendly. the only drawback is that they charge you for missing the appointment, so if you make an appointment, make sure that you show up (not that I didn't learn that the wrong way). Pros: Accomodating staff, good service Cons: A little pricey more

best hair service in the world! 7/21/2009

not only did i get 20% discount as a first timer i also got to experience the greatest hair service. My color was spectacular! I went from black to blonde and my hair felt and looked great. My haircut was just as amazing because i was given the most perfectionist bob cut ever. Sharp angled bob was what I wanted and it was what I got! \r must see JOHN.... Pros: great hospitality, amazing hair service, on time with appts Cons: elevator was out of service more

NO NOT GO THERE!!! 7/15/2009

Ok, lets start with 50 year old style books then move on to the hair dressers who have REALLY BAD haircuts themselves and can hardly speak English!! On top of it all they are super rude. Don't waste your money because I can promise you that you will NOT be happy at all!!! There are so many good places in the city, trust me, do yourself a favor and don't go to that place or you WILL regret it!! If there was a way I can give NO stars as all, trust me I would!!! Pros: NOTHING Cons: WORST PLACE EVER! more

Best Salon in NYC!!! 6/5/2009

I tried this place last week and got the best mens cut I've ever got in New York. The pricing was more than fair and I'm rocking a cut that even my girl said, ""looks amazing!"". Look no further if you want an excellent cut!!!!! more

LOVE LOVE LOVE this salon! 6/4/2009

So... love their work!!! They constantly cut, color and style my hair. They are absolutely professional and amazing results each time. But the only negative was when i wanted to use the spa, they were closed because they were expanding. But everything else is A+ Pros: Their work! Cons: closed the spa when i needed them!!! more

love salon chinois 2/19/2009

I desperately needed a bl*w out and styling done for a last minute fashion event that was invited to. SCRAMBLING i found Salon Chinois. They got me in right away and while i did mention that it was an EMERGENCY, they were so super nice about fititng me in. Patty, my stylist, re-styled my hair and even found time to cut it for me. All my friends loved my new look and i did too! Everything (even the party) was a total unbelievable success. Thank you so much Patty for making me look THIS GOOD!! Pros: Patty is the best. Everyone at the salon is amazing more

Loyal Client 12/26/2008

Contrary to the previous comment i personally love this salon, i have been seeing Yan personally for over six years and he has been more than accommodating, and knows exactly what he's doing. Not only that but the atmosphere of the salon proves stellar and the staff is more then professional. -Michael Catarata more

BEST Japanese Hair Straightening & Haircut in NYC 10/10/2008

HAIR STRAIGHTENING: I've been getting the Japanese Hair Straightening done for the past 5 years, and was THRILLED when I found Salon Chinois 3 years ago. The other places I'd been to left my hair fried and smelly. At Chinois, Patty has done my hair straightening about six times now (2-3 times a year) and she's a godsend. She knows the in's and out's of the process, is very meticulous, and I walk out of there every time with straight and HEALTHY hair. Seriously, the straightening actually MINIMIZES my split ends, breakage and dryness, all of which my natural hair is prone to. Other ""top"" salons I've been to don't even remotely compare in terms of service and quality. I just moved out of the country but am scheduling a trip to NYC just so that I can get my straightening done with Patty... I don't trust anyone else to do it!\r \r HAIRCUT: I get my hair cut with Yan, the owner, who's the friendliest person ever, not to mention a genius when it comes to hair. My hair has never looked this good! He takes his time and does a perfect job every time. He'll totally listen to what you want: he's not one of these stylists that will chop off 4 inches when all you want is to trim the ends. He'll also give you advice about how to style it the way he does. And it's so refreshing to go to a nice salon in NYC that isn't snobby.. Yan will chat it up while cutting your hair and gives you the sort of personal attention that is hard to find.\r \r STAFF: Everyone in the salon is extremely friendly and it has a great positive vibe. \r \r BOTTOM LINE: All in all, HIGHLY RECOMMEND this place. Note: I'm extremely picky and hard to please, but they've totally won me over!\r Pros: Quality services, expertise, great staff and facility more

Must Try... 10/9/2008

I am cursed with the worst pin straight, flat and thin hair. I was in desperate need of a make over. I walked into the salon based on the recommendation of a friend who see Yan *the head stylist* Yan was booked by they had me set up to see Ilda. I was a little nervouse because I know how disastrous new hair places can be, but when I walked in I was greeted by a male receptionist who was gracious , warm and made me feel really comfortable. In fact, ALL OF the staff was equally friendly and inviting. Really eager to make me feel welcome. My hair came out amazing. Ilda put fantastic layers and actually convinced me to do add highlights and I have to say I will never go any place else again. For me, what makes this place unique also is that they have a spa upstairs! You get your hair done downstairs and then go upstairs to have your nails and/eye brow waxing done also. Its one stop beauty and I am definitely going back. Definitely try Ilda. Pros: Warm Friendly Service, Great Haircuts! Salon and Spa in one place Cons: Its really busy and you have to book in advance on all services more

Really wonderful full service salon 7/31/2008

I have friends and family who have been going to this salon since it's opening (and have been following both Yen and Jose for years) and it's a wonderful place. The staff is talented and amazing and you feel like a queen when you leave. I haven't tried the spa services yet, but I've heard raves about them. Pros: Excellent, pleasant staff Cons: A little pricey more

Friendly staff 6/28/2007

I have been to a few hairdressers in New York and didn't really like any of them, however this place is really good. They try and fit you in even at short notice and when the lift doors open I fall in love with the girl on reception every time!\r The pricing is pretty good for a man and I guess repeat visits prove I'm satisfied. more

Rebuttal to an Undeserved review. 4/7/2007

In response to digarnick's review I would just like to say that I was the receptioinst at Le Salon Chinois on the day of her appointment and I would just like to point out to the public that it was digarnick's daughter who had gotten the single process with our colorist, and that it was her daughter who insisted on having a blow-out we in no means pushed the service as it is our philosophy to push our clients to do services. I would also like to mention that we did the eyebrows under the price of the single, any other client that would want to have their eyebrows done it cost a little extra. I would also like to point out that her daughter had gotten a blow-out with our head stylist Yan Chia, who charges his clients $75 for a blow-out, her daughter consistently mentioned that the cost of the blow-out did not matter because she wanted to have it done one way or another. The only reason why our operations manager threatened to call the authorities was this client made a big scene in our salon saying that she would not pay for any of her services in front of our clients who had come in to relax and get pampered. What digarnic failed to mention was that she recieved 30% off of the blow-out, which is more than we usually offer. And i would like it to be known for the record that my manager in NO way yelled at me or reprimanded me, digarnick misunderstood the situation and was a little to emotional so she must've thought that i had gotten yelled at. I would like our clients to know that Le Salon Chinois has never believed in any such thing as ""hidden fees"", it is our mission to please our clients to the fullest extent. more

Hidden Fees make the experience painful! 3/24/2007

The colorist was wonderful and with the first time coupon it was only $68 (for a single application) including eyebrows. However, when they were done coloring they asked if I wanted it blow-dryed. I changed seats and they charged me an extra $75 for blow-drying. They say the coupon doesn't apply to blow-drys. To top it off when I asked why I wasn't told the fee was extra and so high, the owner's wife yelled that she will ""call the authorities on me"" if I don't pay right away. When the receptionist apologized to me, the same woman yelled at her own receptionist. Unless you have money (and patience) to burn, avoid Le Salon Chinois! Pros: Last minute appointment Cons: Hidden fees, angry owners more

Fabulous colorist! 3/15/2007

Irina has been my colorist for years. I started going to her after a horrible hair coloring disaster. She was able to save my hair and I will follow her anywhere. I prefer natural looking highlights which Irina does with the balayage technique. My hair is naturally a dark to medium brown and you would never know it. She has also colored my two sisters, each of us with a different look. Not only is she an excellent colorist, but a caring, lovely person. I highly recommend Irina for all your coloring needs! more

DONT GO FOR THE JAPANESE STRAIGHTENING! 2/6/2007

Hi Guys,\r I got the japanese straightening a few weeks ago by John and it was the worst experience ever.\r First of all, he was the only working on my hair so it took hours.\r But more importantly, he didn't seem to know what he was doing and I've gotten it done once before (a year ago) and it was clear that he was incompetent.\r It's now been several weeks and my hair is really REALLY coarse and dry, like horse hair.\r I've never had it this texture before.\r My hair is naturally soft and the first time I got TR/japanese straightening done, it was beautiful, shiny and straight.\r Now it's unnatural, and coarse and while it's straight it looks absolutely horrible.\r I had the worst salon experience as well.....\r I urge you to go somewhere else if you want good results for your TR.\r John isn't experienced enough and I'm def. going back to the first salon I got it done at for my retouch and subsequent visits.\r Good Luck. Cons: Expensive, Inexperienced, Rudeness, Horrible Hair Now more

The Amazing Ilda 12/13/2006

So, I went here because they were offering a special on highlights and Jose, the colorist, recommended Ilda for cuts. Since they were also offering a special on all services that day, I decided to go for it. A bad experience with a stylist at a different salon has left me with a haircut I hate, and the newfound knowledge that I would rather eat tin foil than have layers in the back of my hair ever again. I have been hopping from salon to salon since trying to fix this unbelievably costly mistake. At my first consultation with Ilda, she explained why the cut didn't work and realistically told me my options. There wasn't much she could do with the back, since I am unwilling to cut it short, but she did make the front layers look nicer. After growing my hair out a little more, I came back so she could clean the layers in the back a little more. It will probably be another 3 months before the back grows out enough so that she can even it all out, and I want to kick myself for having gotten myself in this situation in the first place, but I am very happy that I managed to find such a great stylist. Ilda will go into detail about what will and won't work for you and takes the time to really talk with you to make sure she understands exactly what you want. She is fantastic at cutting; in the past I've almost always had to even out my hair myself after a cut, at least a little. But I don't have to do that when Ilda cuts my hair - she gets it right the first time. I really trust her judgment, and she is a genuinely nice person. At $75, she is a bargain for NYC standards (but still a little expensive for me), and I honestly believe that she can do a far better job than many stylists charging three times that amount. She is the only person I trust now to cut my hair. Thank you Ilda! Pros: Awesome stylist, polite staff, easy to get an appointment Cons: Location is not very convenient for me; $75 is cheap for NYC but still a little pricey more

Great colorist 11/1/2006

I've been here before for a haircut and Patti did a really nice job. But I've been coloring my hair for years and I can't find a good colorist. I know what I want and what I cannot stand is when a colorist says, ""That won't look good, we cannot do it for you."" To me, that translates to: ""I'm not a good colorist, I don't know how to mix it."" Well, I went in and my colorist was late so I wound up with Jose who I will now never leave. I showed Jose exactly the color I wanted and that's exactly the beautiful rich, deep burgundy color I got! Although if the color was inappropriate for me, he would have told me so, but I knew it was ""do-able"". Jose is a funny character, very very friendly and the atmosphere is not stiff at all. Everyone was so nice and accomodating that they will definitely see me again..and again....The woman who washed my hair, Yan and Jasmine, all very personable and very helpful when it came to purchasing some hair products for my hair. My hair looked great this morning after using the new products. A winner. Pros: Expertise, they know what they're talking about and it's not just hype. Cons: None. more
