The pitmaster special left me wanting more BBQ, the food was not worth the calories. I love eating, but if it isn't good, it isn't worth it.

I love going to this place but I have noticed a few things after repeated visits. more

Costs add up quickly depending on what you order 12/31/2010

Came here for lunch recently. The meat by the pound was expensive, I thought. The brisket was tender and moist. We also ordered the bbq beef sandwich special which comes with choice of sides and drink. It was more than enough for lunch. The green bean side was too mushy for my taste. I couldn't finish my lemonade so I took it to go. The lady behind the bar topped it up for me. Sweet! more

not so great 11/4/2010

I had a first date here a few weeks ago and what a mistake. Messy and loud, loud music. The chicken was ok but not great, I care about what I put into my body and the sauce has a lot of sugar in it. My date had ribs which he said was ok but not the best he's had. I won't go back, there are better places. more

Nice Attempt at Authentic BBQ, but... 8/18/2010

I am a BBQ fan and have always wanted to try this restaurant after reading all the good reviews. The opportunity finally arose earlier this week and just my luck - Monday is all you can eat for $25! more

Great BBQ in New York 8/11/2010

One of my favorite places to go in the city. I go there usually for birthdays and other special occasions. The food is great the service is always good. more

Amazing Ribs & Side dishes 5/24/2010

I invited my two other friends as well as my boyfriend and we went for the Sunday Dinner Special, which is $20/person that comes with 1/4 chicken, 1 beef rib, 1 baby back rib, 1/4 lb of beef brisket and 2 small sides as well as a selection of dessert. Pros: Fun atmosphere & Great big ribs Cons: slightly dried brisket more

Good sides, bad chicken 4/19/2010

The "market chicken" was awful, but the pinto bean and mashed sweet potato sides were very good (though kind of small for $4.50 each). I think the chicken was just way too industrially-raised, rather than cooked wrong. The texture was just awful. Not that I was thrilled with the sauce either; Famous Dave's and Brother Jimmy's have much better bbq sauce. Also, I only picked this place because they said that they would have the Country Music Awards on with sound at the bar, and the speakers were apparently not hooked up. The bartender and hostess tried their best to get the sound to work, but no luck. Either way, I dated a southerner for a while and now I look for pulled chicken and pulled pork at bbq restaurants, and this place had neither, but I sure hope the other meats are better than the market chicken because it was just unacceptable. more

Good meat 4/6/2010

My husband and I are big BBQ fans, so we decided to try this place out. The setup was cafeteria style where you stand in line in the "meat station" and the "sides station" to order your food, and you order only drinks from your server. The line was quite long when we went, but I can see how efficient this set up can be. We ordered basically one of everything: most brisket, pork ribs, beef ribs, pulled pork (and I forget what else). Some of the meat was a little salty for me, but it was really good. And I'm a big sides gal, so we got 4 different sides: the baked beans are really good, but the "famous" mac and cheese was not so good (Brother Jimmy's is WAY better). All in all, a very good experience, and even though we ordered enough for 4 people (we had a TON of leftovers), our check was very reasonable. Would definitely go back. Pros: meat quality, friendly service more

Everyone's Top 10 List 4/4/2010

It's tough to know where to go for BBQ in NYC. I think the problem might be as New Yorkers we're not raised on BBQ to really know the difference between good and great. I've been to most of the Top 10 places in the city for BBQ and would say the ribs at Hill Country deserve to be on that list. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable about ribs and brisket and very friendly...and you definitely feel like you're in a real "BBQ joint" with their atmosphere. I would go to Hill Country again. Their BBQ is definitely above average for the city. My only complaint is that the brisket was a little too fatty for my taste...but what do I know, I'm not from Texas, KC or Memphis. You wanna talk pizza, you talk to a New Yorker. Pros: Staff, atmosphere, ribs Cons: Brisket a little fatty more

Great BBQ in a Fun & Festive Setting 2/21/2010

One of the best BBQ restaurants in the City, Hill Country serves Texas style BBQ at reasonable prices. Like a cafeteria for grown-ups, customers line up with trays at the different stations to place their orders for delicious meats and sides. At the meat station, be sure to order the brisket moist. The selection of sides is also quite impressive, from the Longhorn Mac and Cheese to the Sweet Potato Bourbon Mash. Hill Country is great for groups, especially hungry groups, because the food is already cooked, prepared and waiting for you. Long lines at the counters are your enemy. I've been here late a few times and the best selections of meat do sell out so come earlier. If you're lucky, watch a live band in the lower level while you chow down on southern grub. Yeehaw! Pros: great for groups, fun atmosphere, live music Cons: lose your meal ticket and pay the flat minimum $ more

Decent BBQ, Not Great 2/4/2010

went here for the first time last night. Ordered the Two Step dinner special with my girlfriend which basically has every meat on the menu and comes with two sides, allowing us to try a lil bit of everything and eliminate the hassle of the whole meal ticket concept . its a really good deal for the price considering how much food they give you. The line to get our food was pretty short so we got all of our food in about 10 minutes or so which was nice. they wrap all the meat in butcher paper and put it on a cafeteria tray, this would be a problem later. Pros: fast service, brisket, chicken, sides Cons: ribs, no plates more

Best BBQ in the city 12/15/2009

This is a great place to get a good bbq. The pulled pork here is the way to go. I would suggest this place over the dallas bbq and dukes any day. Pros: Great Food more

AMAZING bbq food and service! 12/13/2009

I ate her with a large group of friends on Saturday. I'm not really a big fan of bbq food but after dinner at hill country I'm now an addict! Everything was delicious and the staff were very friendly. Will definitely be back. Pros: food was amazing Cons: none more

Barbecue at it's finest! 12/11/2009

I'm not sure what restaurant the person below went to, but Hill Country is the best barbecue spot I've been to in the city. The aroma of good ole fashion Texas cue hits you the second you enter the door, not too mention the staff that greets you with a smile and makes you feel like you're a regular (even if it's you're first time). I consider myself to be a barbecue connoiesseur (which is maybe why I have a gym membership) and this place honestly makes me wish I'd found it as soon as it opened instead of wasting my money on other food people call barbecue. Not only the food, but FREE live music?! Give me a beer, a rib, and free live music and I'll go just about anywhere. I hear they're opening up a fried chicken place around the corner, looks like I'm going to need to renew my gym membership :) Pros: Yummy cue, great music, amazing drinks Cons: Haven't found one yet! more

Hate it 10/18/2009

A totally rude and unhelpful employee ruined this place for me. BBQ if ok but I'll never spend money at Hill Country again. Pros: BBQ Cons: Rude Employees more

Emperor's new clothes. 6/19/2009

From day one, the PR blitz for this place has been overwhelming. But for all the hype, this place is a cheap imitation of real BBQ. Overly fatty, poorly cooked meat at ridiculous prices. I don't know why this place consistently makes Citysearch's Top 5 lists (a real coup for the PR machine, I guess). There's been a BBQ renaissance in the five boroughs in recent years. There are at least a dozen cheaper and better BBQ joints. Go to those places. Avoid this one. Pros: NYC now has so many better BBQ options Cons: Poor food quality, extremely overpriced more

The best!!! 6/15/2009
