By far the absolute worst Comedy Club I have ever been to. Everything was great until the bouncers jumped me. Yea...thats right. I was with a ""lively"" audience and we were all laughing really hard. The bouncer. an older, taller man came over to me and cursed me off and told me to ""shut the F@ck"" up. I told him all I was doing was laughing. About 1 hour later we laughed again and he actually ripped me up by my shirt, ripping it, attempted to punch me and just grazed me. I then through him off of me. Then my female cousin intervened who was pregnant and another shorter bouncer through her to the ground and kicked her in the stomach. The bouncers are disgusting, old animals and should not be working there. If you fire the staff i will be back but otherwise i wouldn't go if you paid me. I was about to press charges and the police wanted me to, but I know karma will get them in the end. \r \r *This event occurred a little over a year ago so if they replaced the staff than disregard.\r \r If the staff is still the same than STAY AWAY! more

Bad Experience...Bad Comedy Club 12/5/2010

What a bad experience I had at this Comedy Club. I have never been so humiliated in all my life. Everytime so one laughed we were asked to keep it down. The "bouncers" are a much of bullies - management should be ashamed of themselves. Bad experience....Bad Comedy Club. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Every chance I get I will let it be known that this place is terrible. more

Go to see Veronica Mosley 2/8/2010

I've been to pretty much all the comedy clubs in the city and Gotham is probably the best. I've been there at least 5 times. It doesn't have that "I'm in a garage" look that most of the others have. The waitresses are very good - they come by often so we had 4 visits during the show. At the other clubs, I usually get just two, the minimum required by most places. I drink wine so I don't know about the watered-down drinks others wrote about. The reason I'm writing now is because they had a absolutely hilarious comedian on named Veronica Mosley. She had lots of different stuff but most memorable were her imitations of Rachel Ray and Martha Stewart. She only did about 15 minutes and I wish she was on longer. The rest of the show was Ian Bagg who was funny, but just talked to the audience and didnt have much material. All in, I had a great experience - always do at Gotham. Pros: Nice clean club, very good wait staff, drinks reasonable Cons: None more

Worst Comedy Club in NYC 1/16/2010

I'm a relatively big comedy fan, averaging about 10 shows a year, more often at Carolines and Comix (and other venues), though. Last night was my first time at Gotham, so I was optimistic (and the tickets were free, that's how sad the "talent" was for the night - and yes, I know that's a common practice, but the place was half empty still). Pros: Nice aesthetically Cons: Douchebag "Bouncers," Awful "Talent" more

Worst Comedy Club in NYC 1/15/2010

I'm a relatively big comedy fan, averaging about 10 shows a year, more often at Carolines and Comix (and other venues), though. Last night was my first time at Gotham, so I was optimistic (and the tickets were free, that's how sad the "talent" was for the night - and yes, I know that's a common practice, but the place was half empty still). The opening comic, whose name escapes me, was by an enormous margin the absolute worst comic I've ever seen/heard in my entire life. Her entire "act" consisted of asking couples in the front row details about their relationships. Naturally, the only people in the entire room laughing were these same people. The fact that this woman was booked in the first place speaks volumes about Gotham's management; the fact that they didn't boot her off stage 2 minutes into her "act" speaks even more. The fact that they gave my group (7 people, not heckling at all) the evil eye, and subsequently kicked us out speaks even more. I should state the reason my group was being "loud" (other guests weren't looking at us, we were whispering amongst ourselves like all the other disappointed comedy fans) was because 1. the comic sucked something aweful, and 2. I ordered a vodka/tonic, which I had to send back TWICE because there was absolutely zero alcohol in it. Gotham apparently employs shitty bartenders, shitty talent management, and even shittier fat old guy "security" which suffers from an epic case of small dick syndrome. I'm pretty tolerant (especially when booze are involved), but my experience last night was absolutely unbelievable. I will never be going back, and I implore others to avoid this place, for their own sake. Worst management, worst employees, worst comics. Good Comedy, HORRIBLE Drinks. 4/25/2009

Jay Mohr and his openers were very funny and all did a great set. Several months earlier Judy Gold was horrible. So, choose your performer carefully. Pros: Sometimes the comics are funny. Cons: Their drinks are disguisting--watered down liquor? more

Good Comedy, HORRIBLE Drinks. 4/24/2009

Jay Mohr and his openers were very funny and all did a great set. Several months earlier Judy Gold was horrible. So, choose your performer carefully. The Ketel One martini that I ordered was either made horribly wrong or they used watered-down vodka. I sent it back and told them to put some vodka in it. It came back worse. It could not be consumed. The waitress picked up the un-touched drink, but she still charge me $13.50 for it. My date ordered a reisling. Their reisling tastes like white-vinegar. Bad waitress, bad bartender, unreliable comedy shows. If you go, just order beers for your drinks, because everything else is nasty. Pros: Sometimes the comics are funny. Cons: Their drinks are disguisting--watered down liquor? more

Second trip to Gotham Comedy Club and boy, oh boy, was it good! My first time was almost TOO much fun (how often can you say that?!) so I NEVER thought my second trip would live up to my first time! It was amazing! Gotham manages a tight ship: staff was friendly, tables were clean and spacious (nothing like you'd expect from a NY comedy club!), and the security was undoubtedly the BEST! You get the MOST FOR YOUR MONEY -- there was an annoying (probably too intoxicated) group of 30-year-olds at the table next to us. They kept talking amongst themselves which amounted to a terribly distracting and CONSTANT murmur while the comedians were performing. They were kindly asked to quite down (by the suit-and-tie security staff) or to take their conversation outside of the showroom so as not to ruin the show for the other customers. Five minutes later--while the customers from several tables were exchanging glances about this talkative group--the security guy came back over and politely, professionally, and quietly insisted that they leave. This place REALLY cares about it customers and REALLY appreciates their business. After all, the LAST thing anyone wants to spend money on is a bad night out on the town. This was perfect. Pros: SOOO clean; friendly staff; professional security; high quality more

This place IS a joke- it had me laughing for hours! 1/1/2009

This is by far one of the best comedy clubs I've ever been to in the world. It's great that they have created a reputation by having a strong repertoire of comedians that have and do still perform there. I personally have seen some big names there (Hangin' With Mr. Cooper, anyone?). And the security is one of the best things about the place. Unlike SOME NY clubs, this one respects ALL of its customers- not just the obnoxious ones. There is nothing worse than going to a place to enjoy the show and have to tolerate all of the drunk noisy idiots. So yea, if you disrupt the show for others, they will throw you out. Much appreciated, actually. In general, bar far the best place to go for what really feels like an intimate time with some of the best comedians in the world. I go every time I'm in the city, and every time I end up in tears laughing so hard. Pros: Great Comic Line Up! Great service- wait staff and security! Great venue layout! more

Native New Yorkers Chris Mazzilli and Michael Reisman opened the original Gotham Comedy Club in May 1996 and it has proven to be a leader in the industry, bringing comics such as Dave Chappelle, Lewis Black and Colin Quinn (to name a few) to the stage. Gotham Comedy Club has become the backdrop for many TV shows and films such as Jerry Seinfeld's 2002 Miramax film "Comedian" and Larry David's pilot of "Curb Your Enthusiasm". In 2005 Gotham Comedy Club opened it's new 10,000 square foot flagship location providing New York with live performances from today's elite comedians. Located in a 1929 building next door to the historic Chelsea Hotel, the new Gotham Comedy Club draws upon the charm and ambiance of the 1920s to capture the spirit of an upscale theater environment. Comedy Central's Live At Gotham features the country's hottest comedians doing fresh stand-up here. Each week, a new host introduces up-and-coming comedians for an hour of original comedy. NBC's Emmy-nominated series Last Comic Standing brings dueling comedians to duke it out on Gotham Comedy Club's stage, the comedy venue where some of the nation's most notorious comedians began their careers.
