I come here for happy hour on days off . . yes I go to happy hour on days off. Drinks are cheap, sliders and wings are awesome, POTATOE SKINS ARE AMAZING!

You might get lucky here if you are looking for a drunk co-ed to majke out with or more, but if you want to have good conversation and good times, bring along some pals. Crowded, ...

Great Prices, Ho Hum Service 12/10/2010

We went to Down the Hatch for a casual night with a friend. The prices are indisputably great - all our drinks were less than $10. I got the six wing combo. Again, very cheap and good. The wings were delicious and juicy but the onion rings were lackluster. My companions said their burgers were fine - nothing special. Obviously the draw is the wonderful prices and the gritty atmosphere. I would definitely go back with friends. more

One of my Favorite NYC Bars 6/24/2010

Love this bar. Love the fun atmosphere, the year-round xmas lights, the beer pong, cheap drinks, and neighborhood. Often gets very crowded but always have a good time. Pros: Cheap drinks, really fun atmosphere, great neighborhood Cons: Not for those who hate college bars more

SUPER DUPER CHEAP!! $8 pitchers and $3 shots on Thursday nights!! Outer-borough crowd but it's a good time if you bring your own good company 5/7/2010

$21 for 3 pitchers and unlimited wings? 3/17/2010

I recently fell back in love with daytime drinking. There's really nothing better than having a few beers midday, going to bed by midnight, and having all of Sunday hangover-free to tackle whatever projects you wanted to finish over the weekend. Last weekend, I headed over to Down the Hatch to indulge in some beers and wings. Down the Hatch, located in the West Village, has a pretty sweet deal on Saturday and Sundays - pay $21, and you'll have unlimited wings, fries and onion rings from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Need something to wash down those wings? You'll also get 3 pitchers of beer. Don't worry, you don't have to juggle several pitchers. Instead, you get tickets, and you can redeem each ticket for a beer or use four tickets and get a pitcher. You can select any of the beers on tap - I believe I was drinking Michelob Ultra for most of the afternoon (gotta cut those calories somewhere). The bar had plenty of tables and counters to eat wings off of, and unlike a night bar scene, everyone was friendly. People were sharing tables, chatting it up, pouring you some beer, etc. Granted, I was in NYU territory and may have been about 4 years older than some of the patrons, but everyone was getting along fine - to the point where I may have screamed out "Coll-ege." Now on to the beer - when I heard 1-6 p.m., I knew there was no reason for me to get there at 1, so we got there at 3. At first I was a little upset because back in the day, Saturday activities at DTH were all you can drink and now I was limited to 3 pitchers (this coming from the girl who only needs 3 beers). But, we didn't come close to redeeming all our drink tickets - not even the guys. As a heads up, at 5:30 the bartenders stop serving pitchers, but you can still get cups of beer. The bartenders are fine with you stocking up with beer at your table - I believe once it became 6 p.m., we may have had 2 pitchers left and stayed for another hour. Some bartenders didn't even collect tickets, which was great. As far as the food went, it was your typical bar food and was perfect for accompanying a pint. Wings came with fries and you could order onion rings too if you wanted. Our favorite Atomic Wings provides the wings at Down the Hatch. If you are looking to grab a few drinks during the day, check out Down the Hatch. It's a much more affordable option than sitting in any other bar in this city and ordering drinks and food. Pros: Cheap Cons: Crowded more

Great Hangout Shot 4/20/2009

Me and my friends always stop by this place when we are in the city. The crowd is very friendly, there is always a heated beer pong game going on, and the guys to girls ratio is mostly even. Pros: college party vibe, good prices Cons: there are none! more

WINGS WINGS WINGS BEER BEER BEER 4/1/2009

THIS PLACE HAS THE BEST WINGS IN THE CITY BY FAR. I WOULD KNOW. I AM THE CHICKEN KING AND HAVE BEEN TO EVERY WING JOINT IN THE CITY. DRINK SPECIALS EVERY NIGHT. PRICES ARE SICK CHEAP. CAN'T MISS ON ANY NIGHT OF THE WEEK. THEY ALSO GET ANY SPORTING EVENT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR. MMMMMMMMM CHICKEN AND SPORTS MMMMMMMMMMMM Pros: BEST WINGS IN THE CITY, CHEAP DRINKS Cons: ONLY 24HRS IN A DAY more

I looooove this bar! 3/26/2009

I had my birthday party at Down the Hatch last night and I can honestly say it was one of the best nights of my life. My friends have been emailing me all morning, telling me how much fun they had. Thank you so much for an amazing birthday, Down the Hatch! Pros: cheap prices, not pretentious Cons: can't think of any! more

best kept secret.... 3/25/2009

best kept secret in NYC - i shouldn't be telling you this BUT - Saturdays starting at 7pm $1 drafts & $2 shots! cheaper than getting a six pack and sitting in my apartment to get a buzz before i go out! Pros: CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP! Cons: one mouth, two hands more

Great Scam, avoid at all costs..... 3/14/2009

I would avoid this place at all costs. We went to meet some friends who had been drinking there a good portion of the night and we were just starting. They must have thought we were drunk, because after less than an hour and 2 rounds of drinks I had been tabbed for 5 rounds of drinks and the group of girls the bartender was talking to was obviously drinking for free. That is, they were not putting up any money or closing any sort of tab when leaving. If you're drunk and not paying attention this might work, but 2 rounds wasn't enough and it was very transparent. Not to mention when you try to make a point and call them out on it they will send the bouncers over and bounce you out. There really is no way to argue it. Calling the shift manager Noel, likewise, does nothing. The place was full of frauds and it drives me nuts to think of how many people have been ripped off by them. Stay out, stay away, to many other great bars. Pros: Their scamming ruined the night Cons: The bartenders, the people, the prices more

Awesome 1/25/2009

Down the Hatch is a great place for anyone who doesn't mind a crowd. The drink specials, atmostphere and diversity of people are definitely worth your time...not to mention the incredible Atomic Wings! I've brought all types of friends here and each one of them has had a phenomenal experience. They've all come back and introduced the place to others, as well. There is something for everyone here be it the beer pong and foosball, all types of sporting events on the flat screens, the hip and laid back rock/pop music or the food! Let's not forget the wonderful, friendly staff. more

The best place ever!!! 6/1/2008

This place is amazing! As soon as my friends and I got in I knew it would be a cool place to hangout and get to know people. We kept to ourselves for the first hour but then quickly made friends with the bartenders, bouncers, and some of the fellow patrons there. The guy below is just a tightwad who obviously doesnt know how to socialize. 5 bucks for drinks in this city is very cheap and if you think not then maybe your just a dumb tourist who shouldnt come to NYC unless you can afford it. Got a free DTH shirt and then a random guy gave me his as a souvenier. lol. I will be back here and I am definetly bringing my friends. BTW, The Dirty Pearls rock!!! - Kristy Pros: Staff, food, drinks, fellow patrons Cons: NONE!!!! more

Great bartenders, awesome bouncers, good food and fun! 1/19/2008

I have been going to this bar w/ friends for over 5years; it's great, we bumped into it by mistake and ever since that day, we haven't stopped going. The music is pretty good, the bartenders are very friendly and the food is great, esp. w/ the girl that serves it there, Karol, she is amazing, tip her well y'all! The bouncers have most become our friends, we know the whole staff, it's like a big family now. Try it and see for yourself. The drinks are deff. cheap compared to other bars. Pros: Great staff, cheap drinks, good music! Cons: gets crowded at times, but that's a good thing too. more

Expensive Drinks, Ugly Basement Bar, Boring!! 7/1/2007

Well, I don't know about some of these other reviewers, but the beer here is NOT cheap by any means. I don't consider $5 for a bottle of bud cheap compared to several other great dive bars in the city. I saw signs advertising cheaper drinks during happy hour and for women, but if you're a guy going there at night, you're going to get ripped off for each drink you purchase. When I first got there, the place was fairly crowded but then actually became less crowded by 11pm. I think people just got tired of the expensive drinks and went elsewhere after this. This place is also very clicky, everyone knows each other and don't really seem to be in the mood to meet new people. My gf and I sat there for quite a while, and not one other patron greeted us or said a word to us the entire time we were there. This is unusual compared to most of the other bars I like to frequent. The music was being provided by some bad DJ who played mostly rap music. The only good song he played going outside the hip hop genre was Pour Some Sugar on Me. The bartenders were mostly male, but service wasn't bad, just expensive! There are so many better bars to go to in the city that charge much less for drinks, so why waste your time at Down The Hatch. Pros: None whatsoever unless you enjoy watching a meat market party Cons: Expensive drinks after happy hour, horrible DJ and music, partrons aren't social towards newcomers more

Cheap drinks - good times! 6/20/2007

Down the Hatch brings me back to what little I manage to remember about my raucous college party days. With cheap cheap drinks - $1 beers and beer pong, Christmas lights and an obvious lack of men in suits it is a great place to kick back and have some good old fashioned fun. The bartenders are attentive and the music is always sure to please. My only minor complaint is of the size of the restrooms (although from the layout of this underground bar I know not much can be done). Pros: Cheap drinks Cons: bathrooms more

Foosball... Enough Said 2/15/2007

Foosball and cheap drinks. I'm not usually into loud, crowded bars, but I'll make an exception for DTH/OTW/Jakes... Always a good game of foosball to be had. more

New York's Best Bar 1/11/2007

Come here to get away from all those stuck up suits of new york. The drink specials are the best in town. No other bar in New York can match there prices. Go there for happy hour, for lunch, or just to get drunk. If you read GQ or Cosmo then this place isn't for you. Everyone that goes to DHT, goes because of its friendly atmosphere and friendly bartender. DHT is a great place to go if you're tired of paying $7 for a beer. Pros: If you're strapped for cash, this is the place to go Cons: it gets crowded quickly (get there early to get a seat) more

Most fun you could have, and cheap too! 12/30/2006

Just went there last night... it was crowded because of the football game, but the crowd was still friendly. Once the game ended, it opened up, and we made friends with this amazing bartender, Owen. He hooked us up, made great drinks (with flare), and made a night out with the girls that much more fun. Thanks Owen! I'll be coming back here regularly :) Pros: cute bartenders, cheap & strong drinks, awesome all around Cons: crowded, drafty more

good 12/2/2006

went there for my birthday...cute bartenders that were quick! way too packed though for a party...good for young singles...some very cute guys and then some not so cute guys. if youre looking for strong and good drinks and want a low key place then go to down the hatch. more

  • In Short
Aptly named for its basement setup, this bar rocks with the right tunes, lots of drunken NYU students and cheesy year-round Christmas lights. Reasonable prices and specials abound; however, the mixed drinks are small, and the beer is often served in warm mugs. That old faithful, "What's your major?" is often bandied about, and video games please the youngish crowd.
