NOT a local fav anymore 5/29/2009

This used to be a local BYOB place, we used to go here all the time. Then they changed their BYOB policy and never bothered to tell anyone about the $15 cork fee. When I order the pork dish it was dripping in oil, the waitress never mentioned it was deep fried, YUCK. We inquired about the cork fee on the bill and finally they took off the fee however they proceeded to literally hover around us until we left, we didn't even finish our wine. While they hovered over our table the manager proceeded to talk about us to other customer, right in front of us he said, ""they brought their F'ing wine"" and many other things. Thought the French being RUDE was just a stereotype. We will never go here again. Pros: decor Cons: bad food and bad staff more

French Gem in Murray Hill 2/11/2009

I'm always afraid that good reviews will mean that I won't be able to get a table next time I go to Cosette but they do deserve the praise- and a visit. This small restaurant is perfect for an intimate dinner for 2 or a party of 4 or more. I've been coming here for the past 3 years and have never had a bad meal. I've tried the entire menu as well as the specials and I really can't complain. I've brought family and friends to this place and it has become a favorite to all that have visited. Besides the friendly staff the food is the perfect combination between french classics and comfort food and there is always a wine to pair it with. I would recommend the Napoleon and the salade frisee and the salmon tartare for starters just because they are my favrites. For entrees try the Steak, the Rabbit or the fish, you can't go wrong. For dessert- the chocolate mousse will send you home with a smile on your face and in your wallet. This wonderful little restaurant great and very modestly priced. Go try it and I'm sure you'll agree. Pros: Great Food, Romantic, Ambience, Service Cons: Can only seat 32 at a time more

Romantic hideaway 9/22/2008

I've been going to Cosette for the past two years and it is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. Its small size gives it a cozy, romantic feel -- not to mention the fact that the owner also takes your order and serves you. The food is delicious -- I'm a fan of the onion soup and the steak aux poivre. I would highly recommend it for a special occasion. Pros: Great ambience, excellent service, good wine list Cons: Make reservations ahead of time more

DELICIOUS FRENCH NEIGHBORHOOD RESTO 4/14/2008

Even though I've lived just 10-12 blocks away for years, I never noticed this charming French restaurant on 33rd between 3rd/Lex until friends mentioned it (because it is close to the last stop on their express bus from the hinterlands) . . . . The service was terrific, the meal was delicious.....it is a tiny place, so it got a bit noisy as our meal progressed....but a glass or two from Cosette's nicely priced wine list helped modulate the tones.... Pros: delicious traditional French fare; terrific service Cons: rather small and noisy more

good food, great, wine, and tres romantique! 2/14/2008

My fiancee and I chose Cosette for our Valentine's Dinner this year! We loved it! Our table was ready for us right away with no problem. They promptly brought us bread, water, and gave great suggestions regarding the wine list. The Valentine's menu did not have many choices, but it did not bother me, as there was something for everyone. Both my fiancee and I chose the endive salad was an appetizer which was just delicious. I had the cherry duck and he had the filet mignon. Both were great siezed portions and just delicious! The BEST part was dessert!!! Chocolate hearts filled with chocolate and cream. They were delicious and both of the meals came witha glass of champagne! I love the lighting with candles, it's quaint, romantic, and the service was excellent! It made our evening! I recommend it highly! more

Best Local French 12/31/2007

Service is amazing and the food is great. From the freshly baked bread to the wine list, everything is excellent at this french bistro. Pros: Great Food! Great Service! Cons: Wish there were more of them. more

Treasure in the rough 6/29/2007

\r An overall great experience start (great french wines) to finish (to die for apple tart). It's quite small, with wine boxes lining the dining area, but the whole experience is very real and tasty. more

Wonderful food and wonderful service 11/13/2006

I went here on a Sunday night for dinner with my best friend. The waitress and manager? were great. They were really attentive and spoke french or at least had a french accent. We got a bottle of wine (21$- the cheapest) and I had the Cod and my friend had the Salmon. Very yummy! They also give you bread and they refilled it because I ate it all in the first 5 minutes. Delicious butter too!! We had the Creme Brulee for dessert. We each got one but it was way too filling. I would recommend sharing. I left very stuffed and very happy! Pros: Food Cons: It is a small place so you might have to wait if its busy more

Romantic-mania!! 9/7/2006

My boyfriend and are huge fans of this particular restaurant. Recommend to go there for dinner if couples since they have an excellent wine list. (if not wine-drinker, go for the ones they recommend) Love the DECOR; the owner is kind and humorous; general staff are well-etiquetted and comforting. Pros: Great qual.& quant. for the $; decor; atmosphere; service. Cons: can get very crowded for a small place. more

Our Valentine's Dinner 2/24/2006

My boyfriend and I went here for valentine's day. We were seated promptly, the service was good, and so was the food. It's a very small place, so be prepared to listen to other people's converstations at the tables next to you. Pros: good service, good food Cons: close tables more

Cute frenchy place 6/22/2005

No frill, good food & wine at reasonable price, reasonable servise. I wonder why I did not find this place much sooner. Definately I would love to go back there - good neighborhood place. more

Cute place. Bad food. 1/15/2005

It's a quaint little place with cute bistro decor. Unfortunately, my girlfriend and I were both dissatisfied with the food. Her butternut squash soup, a special, was watery, and tasted ""exactly like the soup from Food Emporium"". My girlfriend should know, since she orders this soup whenever it's available at any restaurant. She sent it back after two spoonfuls but we were charged for it anyway. Her salmon was tender but bland. My chicken in red wine sauce skimped in the sauce department and therefore was very bland as well. And the wait staff seemed like they didn't want patrons. My girlfriend, who is dieting and wanted nothing more than soup and a salad, was told that she MUST order an entree in order to stay at the restaurant. Pros: Decor, Uncrowded Cons: , Bad service, Small menu more

Little Piece of Paris 1/4/2005

Once you step into Cosette, you're miraculously in a small, off-the-beaten path Parisian bistro. This tiny restaurant is as cozy as it gets, with that certain Parisian flair. The food was average to above-average; the French Onion soup filling yet not overly impressive, and the desserts not brilliant in any way. However, go for the ambience, and consider the food just a companion for a trip across the world! more

Look elsewhere 5/21/2004

Look elsewhere. Go only if you are already in the neighborhood and don't want to bother going farther for a better place. The appetizers are just OK and the main courses were decidedly subpar. Worse of all, $60 was ""erroneously"" added to our $80 bill. You could get a much better dining experience for the same amount of money in a lot of other French Bistros. Pros: quaint decor more

Yummy 2/25/2004

The waiter was nice, great service. Cosy. Food was good and reasonably priced. Pros: Service more

Cosette is NOT a 10 5/13/2003

I did not have any disasters at Cosette. Everything went as well as the restaurant could have wanted. This place is not a ten, people. I do not understand the gushing. The food was very obviously prepared and you could have done a better job at home. I've had steak tartare in about 10 restaurants in New York; this was the worst. It's staffed by French people, the maitre d' is very nice. But it's got to come down to the food in the end. Average priced for a bistrot with worse-tasting food. We went due to the ratings here, but think that the reviewers should try some other places before heaping 10's on this place. Try Le Madeleine for a similar price but much better food. Pros: maitre d', authentic bistrot Cons: can buy better food, at the store more

Lovely! 2/2/2003

Authentic bistro! Finally! Romantic if you want it to be (brightly lit). Bernard is a great host; it didn't bother me a bit that he recited the entire menu to my wife. All the food was hot & tasty. 2 soups, 2 entrees, 4 glasses of wine and one dessert cost $110 w/ a 20% tip. Go for it! You'll adore it. more

Ooh la la 12/9/2002

Cozy romantic atomosphere with only around 15 tables at most. Service was very prompt but slightly rushed. Food was very good, but not what I would consider out of this world. Go here for a romantic dinner but not for an all out wow dining experience. more

Pleasant Surprise! 11/17/2002

Fantastic place. Cute and decorative. A pleasant surprise. Go there to relax and feel like your somewhere else. more
