Barking Zoo

Awfully rude and overpriced place. Went in this past weekend to find a coat. Had a man hovering over us as though we were going to steal it. Found a coat, but our measurement was off by two inches. Since we live in HK, bringing our dog down in the snow wasn't an option, so he couldn't have him try it on there. This store has an asinine return policy. We were only able to get store credit, not a refund, after we brought the coat back the next day, unused. Of course they had nothing else in our dog's size, and refused the idea of ordering one in the correct size. Talk about awful customer service. Cons: Price, Customer Service more

There are so many stores to choose from in the neighborhood, my favorite is the barking zoo. Not only is the food selection excellent (they have been always able to meet my dogs ever changing dietery needs) but the staff has always been knowledgeable, personable and makes it a pleasure to shop in this little neighborhood gem. The staff has always made me feel at home and more importantly appreciated. Now I ask, where do you get that these days? I've recommended them many times and would not hesistate to do so again. The guys who own the place have have a lot of expertise in nutrition; they manage to carry a big range of premium and specialty foods and are happy to help you with your pet's diet. Yes, they WILL discuss the state of your dog's digestion with you week after week while you search for the right food. So as a long time patron of the store I figured I would shed some light on the Best dog spot in Chelsea. The Barking Zoo has one of the best selections of Holistic foods in NYC. They have a very knowledgeable staff that are quick with a helping hand and a smile. Their selection of toys and beds is second to none. I have shopped there for a long time and plan on continuing. I enjoy the fact that this pet store offers cute homemade treats, quality pet food and free advice, but what I don't appreciate is the always prompt snickering ,smart alec vibe I get from the shop tenders. I return often, but always have to brace myself for the uncomfortable feeling I get that costumers are waited for to provide a forum for comic relief and sarcastic banter amongst the sales people. I suppose if you keep in mind that your friendly conversation will only be appreciated to make you feel a fool in the company of ""The Barking Zoo"" whence thrown back at you sarcastically/obnoxiously, or used for the co-workers to score wisecrack points amongst themselves, it's not a bad place to spend your money. Being new to the Chelsea neighorbood (former UESider) I asked at the local dog run where one shopped for their dogs. The Barking Zoo was recommended to me by everyone I spoke with. I made a b-line there and found my new best friends!!! The selection of Natural and Holistic and Raw foods was amazing. Their staff were so friendly and helpful. They referred me to local Vets, dog walkers and groomer, set up an account for me putting me on a delivery schedule every other week. I really appreciated that service but plan on making frequent trips to The Barking Zoo myself to scout out the best toys, bags and beds for my 2 cats and 2 dogs. New product comes in weekly so if you snooze you lose! They also design and make their own line of dog sweaters! Highly recommend to all. Very busy on weekends, Many tourists flock there.
