At Salon & Beyond

I have never written a review on this site but felt compelled to because I am disappointed with the haircut I got at "At Salon." I went there because I saw that it has 5 stars on Citysearch, but now I wish I hadn't. There's nothing like a bad haircut to lower a woman's self image. The hair sylist was nice, but he didn't do what I had asked and emphasized. I had asked for just a trim with slight layers, and for my hair to remain thick, but he gave me chunky layers, with the shortest ones too short and prominent. (It reminds me of the old "Rachel" haircut from Friends in the 1990s - this does not fit the shape of my face at all.) I think part of the problem was that English is not his first language, and maybe he didn't understand me, though I asked if he did, and he said yes. I also couldn't entirely understand his heavy accent. After he started cutting, he didn't ask me a single question, which I am not used to. I feel like he didn't care what I had asked for and did what he wanted instead. At the end, when I saw the back of my hair, I said I hadn't asked for my hair to be thinned out like that. He countered that it is lighter this way. I said I didn't want it lighter. I wanted it to stay thick. He asked me to remain sitting so he could work on it some more, and I said, no thanks. I didn't want to lose any more hair in his hands. The only way to fix it now is to wait 6 months (at least) for it to grow out. The woman at the reception was nice and said I can come back for my hair to be fixed, and I told her the same thing, that only time will repair it. As I mentioned, the staff was kind, and I feel a little bad giving the salon one star because of it, but I am very disappointed in my haircut and plan to wear it in a ponytail until it grows out. more

I moved to NYC from Chicago 5 years ago. I was terrified about finding a new place to get my hair done. I went online, read review after review, and finally picked a salon. Fortunately, I picked At Salon. They are A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!! Luda is my colorist and she is truly the best. She is an absolute perfectionist. She has done Japanese straightening for me, KeraSmooth treatment, highlights, and she even corrected my color on the first visit. I didn't even know my color was "broken"... but after she was done, I could see such an improvement. It was unbelievable. I love going to At Salon. I go every three weeks. I had to add this review after seeing doriprincess' review about how she recommends finding a colorist elsewhere. Don't go anywhere else. As I said, Luda is a perfectionist and will do her best to inform clients but in the end, it is their choice on what color to go with. Sometimes I want to try something new too, instead of just covering the grays, and Luda is always on top of it. She cautions me if I choose a color that might not be just right and always steers me in the right direction. I trust her COMPLETELY. Luda is a great person and is meticulous about her work. * Note to doriprincess -- you should really try her again... :-) Venera does my cut and blow dry. She is also amazing! For 4 years, I kept my hair long and kept telling her, "Just trim the ends...", which she did. Then I had that moment that many of us know all too well and I told her, "Cut it all off, I don't know exactly what I want but I trust you." She did a great job and of course, I kept going a little shorter each time as I got used to the new length. She was always patient and wonderful. I sleep when she dries my hair. I know she will do it right and it's so relaxing. Highly recommend her and Luda! Getting an appointment is a breeze. Maya is always so helpful. Sam, the owner, is terrific. He has made so many changes to the salon over the years. He's always adding things like free wi-fi, handmade jewelry for sale, more products. It is a great place and there's no question that everyone there takes great pride in their work. You will NOT be disappointed with the crew at At Salon. I actually had to go back to Chicago for several months last year and I missed them terribly! I am back in NYC now and so happy to see them regularly again. more

Let me preface this review by saying that I am a very first timer when it comes to getting my hair colored so there may be things that happen to everyone that are unavoidable. With that said, I got my hair colored At Salon and Beyond by Luba, and though she was very nice and squeezed me in for appointment and was patient with all of my questions, the end result is not what I was hoping for. Also, let me say that the customer service here is fantastic. The woman at the front desk found me and a friend an appointment on a Friday night that same day and was very helpful and nice. Luba was attentive and seemed to know exactly what I needed (a demi-permenant color) right away and helped me pick one out. The person that cut my hair, Shawn, was nice and though I really just needed a quick trip, blew my hair out beautifully. They offer treats and coffee and a discount for 1st timers. But...I chose a color that was quite vibrant (that is my fault) because it was hard to tell with the little samples that it would be SO red. To Luba's credit, she did recommend a less bright color but didn't really explain that the color on my head would be so different from the sample. Also, I really wanted an auburn color, and what I got was that weird purplish-red that can only be described as bright burgundy that you see older ladies use. Plus they said that there wasn't really anything they could do that day about the dye that was on my scalp and around the crown of my hair but that it would wash away with 1 shampoo. I left feeling uncomfortable that I had a line around my hairline of red but thought that it would better the next day. 5 shampoos later (one even at another salon) the line is still there and my scalp is still conspicuously dyed red. All in all, I would get my haircut again there since the customer service was so great and the haircut is nice (not really anything special, but pretty good), but I think I'll shop around for a different colorist. more

The Kera-Smooth Treatment for my hair was the absolute best purchase I have made so far this year! The salon color specialist Luda had advised me to get the treatment at the beginning of the summer. Although I wish I had listened to her sooner, two months after the treatment, I still have perfectly smooth and frizz free locks. I would most definately recommend the Kera-Smooth treatment. Thank you Luda, not only for your amazing colorist skills, but for your very wise and helpful consultation. more

I was new in town and I heard a few good reviews about this salon from some colleagues. And they were right! The staff at this salon were very professional and friendly. The salon offers a wide range of hair products (for those of us who simply don't have the time to shop around), and they offer every service one can possibly wish for. I got a haircut and color, and both professionals really listened to my needs and provided a consultation. I would have to recommend their colorist Luda- she is absolutely fantastic and performs her job immaculately. When I left the salon, she had me feeling 10 years younger, with a fresh head of highlights and beautiful shiny healthy hair. Next time I'm in town, I will be making an appointment with her for sure. more

I tried many services in @Salon and really I cannot say anything but it is a very good beauty salon in my area upper west side of Manhattan. The professional service, customer service are outstanding and the discount for first time, second time and their special discount for some services and occasion are unbeatable in any other place I did try in the past, so in other word it is a value service and cost. I think everybody will like this place as I do. more

I’ve been looking for a beauty salon with high quality service and moderate pricing for years since I moved to NYC 12 years ago. After many tries finally I discovered At Salon and Beyond when it opened about 6 years ago. I’ve been using its services for more than 5 years now and I am very loyal to the awesome team who works there and it will be unfair to mention any name because I could forget one and all of them are nice professional and customer service oriented, starting from the receptionist, assistants, hairdressers, colorists, manicurist, and esthetician all are nice and act very professionally with excellent attitude. The owner is very active in managing his business and you will find him around most of the time following with each concept and details if you will notice, he asked me to write a review about his salon if my time allow because he understand how it is sometime inconvenient for many people to find extra time even to check their emails but because he is so nice and polite I had to find the time to write this review. And I think he does this with most of his clients may be all of them and that is show how keen he is in promoting and keeping his business on the top of excellence and proficiency compare to a lot of other beauty salons. I am happy with the services and the prices and I always feel good when I am at the salon with their professional service and excellent customer service besides their unbelievable hospitality in offering food, snacks, desserts, drinks and more. This place is better than a lot of other places I tried and I hope that they will be rewarded for their ultimate services by attracting more and more clients and improve their success in this bad economy. I have been a client in At Salon for more than 4 years and the services and customers service are very impressing, every body is so nice I saw a lot of people working there within the years and I didn't find one you can tell that he or she is not nice and professional. I should write about the salon long time ago but because everybody is busy and no time to have a minute to do anything till the owner ask me to write something about the salon if I am happy with the service and I promised him I will do. I had tried most of the services at the salon from hair cut, color, skincare, facial, waxing to makeup and massage even the Japanese Straightening I tried and with full confidence I am saying that they were outstanding and fantastic services I enjoyed all of them and the team over there is very skillful and extra professional. So good luck to them and hopefully they stay like that and good luck for you in trying their services and enjoy what I enjoyed. I had my color and haircut done at At Salon & Beyond and I am really happy with the result I got. The colorist and stylist did listen to me and what I wanted and they consulted me with what they can do and what will look better and I left very happy and my hair wasn't in better look like this before. I do appreciate their work and I can say that they are true artists in what they are doing and the salon is a very cute, cozy and professional place to be in and feel that you are at your home. I love this salon! It's close to where I live and the service is second to none! Lilliana is a wonderful stylist and colorist and the receptionist Maya is so friendly and courteous! I felt like I got the star treatment! Also, the chocolate baklava is to die for! I have tried a few salons in NY and this is by far the best! Lilliana listens to her clients to try and give them exactly what they want. Also, Sam is a wonderful owner and puts his customers first. Also, they don't overcharge you. The prices are very reasonable and 20% off your first visit is a plus! I highly recommend this salon and will definitely be back! Pros: Great, friendly service and sweet treats! Cons: None! more

I accidently ran into "At Salon & Beyond" 2 years ago when I was looking for places that specialized in Japanese Hair Straightening. I decided to give this place a shot and I've never once looked back. The owner is a fantastic fantastic man - very professional, friendly and always striving for customer satisfaction. The staff is highly talented and excel in their art. My favorite of all is Luda (hopefully, I'm spelling your name right!) who is the coolest lady I've met. She is the go-to person for hair straightening and hair coloring. She can give Ken Paves (Jessica Simpson's hair stylist) a run for his money, no exaggeration! Then there is Viniera and Natasha - the go-to ladies for haircut. They have mastered their art perfectly and never cease to amaze me and my hair! The great services combined with East European hospitality adds an eadditional flavor to the salon. And not to forget the yummy desserts! I would highly recommend this salon to everyone - its definitely worth every penny! Pros: Excellent - Service, Staff, Snacks ( yes, snacks too)! Cons: Nada! more

Sam bakes up yummy treats, and all the staff make the effort to make sure you are happy with your experience. Luda's highlights are consistently perfect, and the head massages are the highlight of my month! If you're looking for a down-to-earth, friendly salon that won't bankrupt you, you found it! When the "girl" who used to "do" me at a downtown salon left without saying where she was going, I had to find a new place. I had recently moved to the Upper West Side, had no clue where to go, and chose At Salon, based on the rave reviews here on Citysearch. I did have reservations, though, thinking, okay, there's no way it can live up to the hype, but at the very least, I'll snag a free pastry/cookie/cake from the room in the back, which was purported to be a perk. * I'm always anxious when trying a new place, even when it's touted as being "friendly". Upon entering, however, I was greeted by everyone within, and all anxiety went the way of the dodo. (The old receptionist has since left. Maya, the receptionist now, couldn't be a better or more gorgeous "first face" if she tried.) * Edyta, the manicurist/pedicurist, although as stunning as a model, is as modest and down-to-earth as your favorite school teacher. And the actual manicure and pedicure? Absolute perfection. She made my nails look like shiny, flawless candies -- but too delicious-looking to chew. She did not rush the process, and she also didn't waste any time, so every minute I spent in her care was extremely well spent. (Edyta has since stopped doing pedicures, but my feet are now in the exceedingly capable and just as attentive hands of Alexandra, a relative newcomer.) * Edyta's hair always looks smashing, so I was thrilled to learn that her stylist is Liliana at the same salon, and soon I trusted my hair to her hands. This is not a feat easily accomplished. However, I cannot rave enough about how much I love what she does to my hair. I love it so much, in fact, that I even entrusted my boyfriend's hair to her hands, and now he is hooked too. * I have NEVER seen anyone leave At Salon looking less than overjoyed with the wonders the staff has worked on them. * P.S. Oh, and the sweets in the back? DIVINE. The baklava, made by Sam, the owner, is the best I ever had. I moved to the upper west side from Chicago. I went on Citysearch to make my decision as to where to get my hair cut and colored. The comments on this site were accurate. I received amazing service a great haircut and color. My friend from Chicago came to visit and said my highlights were the best she's ever seen. I would highly recommend this friendly, salon with reasonable rates along with a precision cut and color. You won't be disappointed in your experience at this salon. They also offer a discount on your first visit. more

There are so many positive reviews about At Salon, but I can't stop myself from posting one here too. It's the best salon I've ever been to. Once you're there, you'll like everything about it - the interior design, incredibly friendly atmosphere, highly professional staff, great beauty products, free internet while you wait, even the home-made cookies! I keep coming back to this salon even after I moved to Philadelphia. Out of the services the salon offers, I usually come here for the haircut, blow-dry, hair-coloring, manicure and pedicure (and not to forget to mention amazing scalp massage during the hair wash). I also buy all of my hair care products here. What more can I say? My husband LOVES my new short hair style, even though he didn't even want to hear about me getting rid of my long hair! =) more

I am originally from France coming to New York each 2 weeks for business and stay for a week, it was difficult for me to find a nice place to get my beauty services done in New York City, I tried a lot of beauty salons all over the city out of CitySearch reviews and finally I found what I am looking for the best service and the convenient price besides the French boutique atmosphere which I always miss when I am out of Paris. I tried them many time in many different services and I can say it is a very professional nice cute place to have you beauty service done. It is outstanding beauty salon, outstanding service, outstanding customer service and hospitality. The most importing thing that I felt like I am in Paris atmosphere and I did not miss my country. I've been coloring my hair for years (single + highlights) and there is no better feeling than when you find a perfect colorist. I've been to MIngle a few times and have NEVER been disappointed. My gal is Sheila. You'll get exactly the color you desire from a smart, caring, sweet colorist. The entire salon and staff is just lovely. I created an account here on City Search because I had to write about how great this salon is! So far I've been there about 3 times, and I have no complaints. I live on the Upper West Side and go to school in Chelsea, and I've tried every upscale salon I could find an appointment for -- then one day I walked in and wondered if anyone could do my hair. Half an hour later (every other salon takes 45+ min), my long, curly hair was straight without the use of a flat iron, and I felt so good about myself that I literally walked for hours around the city. I felt like going back home would be doing a disservice to how well Venera did my hair! So far I've also seen Natasha, and they've both done great jobs. The staff there is so friendly, and the prices are a miracle compared to what else I've paid. After I had been going for facial and wax service in J. Scott Salon for long time, they stopped having these services last week, so I had to find out any other good place in the area and through citysearch I found At Salon. I was there few days ago after having an appointment for facial and wax. The place was very clean, nice waiting area, coffee, tea, water, soda and a lot of snacks and pastries available with very nice staff treat you with personal attention and hospitality. The appointment started on time I was a little early, the treatment room was very private and the esthetician was well knowledgeable with her stuff, she started with the facial French Company Protocol and products and then again she did my wax service and for the first time in my life I did not feel even any little pain as usual in waxing procedure, I think the wax quality which is French made also or the oil and lotion used on the skin before and after wax. I enjoyed the service, I got what I need and I think I found my new cozy place around the corner, I am very happy and I do recommend this salon for all of you.
