damaged hair 6/29/2006

While the stylist was very nice, my hair was damaged badly in an attempt to relax it. I was told that there would be no problem, but I knew something was wrong when the stylist and another started talking in Japanese and pulling at my hair. I wasn't charged for the relaxer, but had to return another day to do a protein treatment. I paid for that, but the effects turned out to be incredibly temporary. I would seriously advise against getting any relaxers here. My hair is in real trouble. I've had Japanese thermal reconditioning done in the past with fantastic results. This is one mega disaster that almost warrants a shaving of the head. I'm really upset and angry. more

Outstanding 6/3/2006

When I first stepped into Arte salon, I felt a relaxing atmosphere. I was greeted by the owner, Joseph, who cut my hair. I felt like I was in my own private salon. Everyone was kind and my hair cut turned out GREAT! I get so many compliments and it pleases me that I am also happy with my hair. I would definitly reccomend that you come to Arte Salon. Barry Soileau is THE BEST! 1/31/2006

My hair was highlighted 4 years. I moved & someone else screwed it up. It had to grow out a long time. Called around & got Barry, who did some checking and found my products and called me back. He took the time. We ended up doing something different and I loved the color and cut he gave me, but I was impressed with the effort he put into all of it, and LOVED the look. Arte Salon isn't a SuperCuts, it is a high-end salon, but you will love how you are treated here, and you will love Barry's expertise! Pros: Very knowledgable, Cutting Edge, No Hair Damage more

laid-back eclectic salon 1/18/2006

First time visiting and I had a great experience. Nice glass of wine while my color was processing, which turned out perfectly thanks to Cristin. Kimberly cut my hair and she really took the time to find a style that suited me. Everyone was very friendly and the atmosphere was hip yet relaxed. Just what I was looking for. Pros: great hair more

Nice Salon Sub par service. 1/13/2006

I went to the Arte` salon for highlights and to get my hair straightened and hair cut. Cristin did my highlights and they came out AMAZING. Jospeh did my cut and straightened my hair with the drier and flat iron. The cut was just okay, the flat iron fried my hair. Ive had my curly hair straightened to silk before w/o damage. The girl doing my conditioning treatment kept running off to collect her tips and leaving me there to wait, very rude. Overall it was not what i expected. Thankfully my hair was okay. I've been to a lot of different spaces in NY, because I am picky but don't get along with picky people. The staff is very cool but not cool in any annoyingly hip way. You just get a sense of relaxation. Kim does so well with my hair that I don't have to worry about paying twice for half of what I hope to get. total steal. Pros: atmosphere, service, up to date more

I have never done this before but I found Arte online, I did alot of research and this salon kept coming up. I have very short hair and couldn't seem to find anyone to cut it so it would look hip and modern instead of frumpy. I took a shot of after reading all the reviews for Arte from Citysearch and made an appointment with Kristen.She was great!!Knew exactly what I wanted and took so much pride in cutting my hair. It came out exactly how i wanted it, and i have gotten more compliments in the past few days than in a long time. Everyone at the salon was very pleasant. The atmosphere was really comfortable, not stuffy at all. I even brought my 16 year old daughter who is impossible to please and she is thrilled with her cut and blow out. I will be back!! more

I love the haircuts I have been getting from Kim. I have followed her for quite some time because I LOVE her work. My haircuts are always easy to maintain, and she always has great new ideas to make sure my cut is always up to date. Kim is a talented stylist, and I would highly recommed her to everyone! Peaceful and Zen atmosphere 11/27/2005

This salon is a great find. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. I received a soothing scalp massage followed by a glass of wine. (wow!) Kristen gave me a wonderful haircut that is easy to maintain at home with minimal styling required. she also gave me some highlights- very natural looking. overall i would highly reccomend this salon. Nice salon, horrible hair 11/24/2005

While this salong is beautiful and the staff is friendly, I walked out with a haircut that is not flattering. And not what i asked for. Color and cut took over 3 hours and cost $300. Was this a cry-when-i-got-hom experiene?? Yes. more

Highly recommended 11/16/2005

I made a last minute appointment at Arte as a first time customer after reading on Citysearch how great the salon and stylists were here. They were so accommodating and friendly and my stylist, Miriam, did a fantastic job and gave me exactly what I was looking for in my cut... an hour after leaving the salon when I was at a Starbucks in the neighborhood, someone standing in line near me asked me where I get my hair done and commented on how nice it looked. My stlylist Kimberly just moved to Arte and I LOVE IT!! The salon is very inviting, hip but not pretentious. Kim always has new ideas for my hair and gives me styles that are easy to do at home. Her cuts grow in well and I'll still get compliments 2-3 months down the road. THANKS. more

The salon is cool and relaxing and the staff is friendly and professional. Cristin did my hair, I went from a long to short hair and I love it. She is great with curly hair and she gave me highlights that fit my complexion just right. I was so bored with my look but didnt' want to leave the salon traumatized by a drastic cut either. When it was all done I felt like a whole new person, I love my new cut and color! more

1st time at arte's salon 7/22/2005

Cristin was an angel of a stylist. We spoke for a few minutes before the actual hair cut to figure out what I wanted and what worked. Cristin really took the time to study my hair and advise me on what she's thinking of. Needless to say the hair cut is divine! Given that my hair is fine, it's tricky to cut correctly but Cristin had no trouble at all. The shampoo girl was also wonderful! She gave me the most relaxing scalp massage ever. This salon is a rarity. more

No Attitude, Fabulous 'do 5/17/2005

I always love going to Arte. The owner and staff are friendly and welcoming. The space is simply, but beautifully styled. Arte is an excellent value, and I never feel overcharged and underappreciated, as in other NYC salons I've been to. Like many of the other reviewers, I go to Barry as well. He takes care of me and we've gotten into a groove....he offers style/color recommendations, but he also listens to this opinionated girl, and I think that's important in a stylist. Both my roommate and myself followed Cristin from her last salon to Arte! I have a very short cut and she does a great job at keeping it very feminine and stylish. I wouldn't trust anyone else with my hair. Pros: great location, stylish, friendly more

Barry Soileau 5/16/2005

Barry Soileau has been my stylist since he moved here from New Orleans, and I pray that he never moves back, because I have NEVER had someone that has made my hair look THIS good! My wife had gone to him and raved about him and sent me to him. Being a good husband, I went (mainly to get her happy) but I am now convinced and glad I did.
