HOOKAAAAH 10/22/2009

Khyber Pass is like our second home apart from college. We come here about 6/ out of the 7 days a week to smoke hookah. Sometimes we even get there before they open. The service is great except for the blonde girl (the one whose eyes are like awkward, her hair is always pulled back and is platinum blonde)whose dating one of the guys she's kinda mean only because she messed once and we called her out on it. but what ever thats not the point. Her boyfriend is nice though and the owner loves us LITERALLY. MOVING ON. Now to explain why we put 0.0 as the food rating... we've never eaten there we go there for the sole purpose of smoking hookah. Ps: nobody can have our booth its the one on the left side..well actually both of them they're reserved. Now rating the hookah its UHmazing you can mix flavors put them in fruits and its just awesome. It takes about 4 to 6 pulls to start feeling the hookah. But then again there are some people who can't handle it and cough their lungs out. you know who you are. The hookah is cheap too 15 bucks a hookah. as for drinks we usually drink poland spring but they're coffee (cappucino) is really good too. The environment its comfortable and relaxing. if you get lucky some one might just whip it out under the table. (true story) Just don't sit outside if you're gonna smoke cuz there are people who keep asking if your hookah is weed and it clearly isn't. The music is awesome we often dance to it.. and hookah just generally liquifies your brain. Show up and have fun. HOOKAHHH Food: 0.0 Service: 5.0 Value: 5.0 Atmosphere: 5.0 more

Bland and sweet food- avoid! 8/16/2008

I went to Khyber Pass for a casual dinner. I love Afghani food, but this was not good Afghani food. Other than the kebabs, nothing was good. The soup was so bland, that we didn't even touch it & the waitress decided to give us house salad instead because she saw we were disgusted by the soup (plus, there's only one choice of soup). We tried two appetizers, and the lamb which came in a gravy which was unbelievably gross. The only good thing to eat was the baklava, and the chicken kebab. I think if I went again, I would only try the kebabs- stay clear of everything else unless you like bland food. Pros: Hookah while eating, no wait Cons: Terrible food, ok service more

Very good 8/24/2007

a bunch of friends and i ate here and it was awsome. everything was great from food to service. i deff plan to go back again soon Pros: food more

Nice decoration, good food, good prices 3/12/2007

I've been to Khyber Pass several times. It is inexpensive, it has great decorations and good ambiance. The food has been great most of the times, and some times a little bland. I went once for Valentine's day and their Valentine's special was really good. The service could use a little improvement but over all this is a place I will keep going back to. Pros: ambiance, prices, food Cons: service inconsistent more

Pretty average 2/5/2007

Maybe my expectations had been raised too high from reading some other glowing reviews but although the food wasn't bad it wasn't entirely memorable either and the waitress was clearly somewhat new to the job and not attentive at all. We started with some vegetable and lamb somosas which were OK but the oil tasted a little stale. Mains were well proportioned and the kebab's were nice but again no taste distinction, everything was fairly bland and I used a lot of the sauces on the table to lend some extra flavour. Pop in if you're passing by but not worth a special trip. Pros: Kebabs Cons: Bland more

Based on the other reviews, I was looking forward to this but... 9/14/2006

Based on other reviewers here, I was looking forward to dining at Khyber Pass, so last weekend I went there for lunch. I was sadly disappointed. The service was inattentive, but at least the waitress was pleasant. As far as the food goes, the appetizer was delicious, but the main entree itself was clearly microwaved leftovers. Anyway, despite that, it had no flavor and was quite bland. I make better eggplant at home than I had at this place. The decor was decent enough, and the large tables in the front looked really nice to dine at. Pros: inexpensive, quick and easy seating Cons: inattentive service, bland food more

Excellent food ambience, everything 5/24/2006

I have been to this restaurant maybe 4-5 times with both parents and friends and it was excellent every single time. Pros: Food, Amazing Decor, great service Cons: na more

good food, good price 3/21/2006

I have been there twice. The second time service was a bit slower, and less attentive (supposedly an Afghan celeb was getting all the attention at the table in back of me). But it has a nice, romantic, and afghan ambient to it. I have also been to Bamiyan afterwards, and found the setting there to be a little bit more exotic and romantic, but however, perferred the food and porportion-price deal at Khyber pass. Pros: inexpensive, nice decorations more

Great food - poor service 1/18/2006

I went there the other night on a date, and the food to put it simply was amazing! The portions were big enough for one, and big enough for the price ($10-$15 for an entree). The restaurant is decorated beautifully, you have to check out the ceiling and the chandeliers! The service though was horrible. After being seated for a half hour with our menus closed, my date had to get up to get a waiter. He then had to get up to get the check also. It was the worst service I have ever had, and there were only 2 other couples in the entire place! Pros: Food, Ambiance Cons: Service more

nice little place 5/19/2005

I also had apps the first time I went there and the best was the pumpkin filled fried dough things. They came with a great slightly sour sauce (yogurt and spices?) and it was SO good. The lassa like cardamom drink is great too. There is a beautiful little window seat with a low table and some cushions. SO romantic... more

Roll of the dice. 4/8/2005

If you're looking for something that's a fusion of middle eastern and indian, then you'll be very pleased with Afghani food. Khyber Pass is extremely inconsistant in terms of the quality of the food and the service is always slow. I'd recommend getting a number of appetizers and a single main dish so you can get a range of flavors. A pot of spiced tea is a must. Pros: nice decor, quiet Cons: inconsistant, slow more

Super ambience, great food 3/19/2004

This is one of my favorites, and it's the restaurant I always take my out-of-town friends to when they come to visit for one night - the St. Marks atmosphere to give them a little ""culture"", and Khyber Pass for the great food and delightful ambience. Great restaurant for a cheap-but-not-sleazy first date too. Pros: cushion seating, inexpensive, unique menu more

nice place 1/5/2004

My fiancee and I had a very nice meal here - unusual food (pumpkin) but very tasty. The atmosphere was very warm and homey for a cold winter evening, and the service, while not spectacular, was fine. Definitely a nice place to go for a relaxed, cozy atmosphere and a slightly-more-exotic than normal menu. Pros: atmosphere, food Cons: location, wine selection more

DING DONG 6/13/2003

DING DONG - great experience, service slightly inattentive and slow, but go it's good. Pros: good value, good food Cons: slow service more

Don't Pass Up the Khyber Pass!! 11/12/2002

YUM! This place is quaint and the food is yummie and interesting. Service is a tad slow...well more than a tad. But overall a definitely good meal. more

savory and delicious 8/15/2002

don't compare this restaurant to the indian dives around st marks--this place has a beautiful interior and delicious food. the best afghan food i've had in the city (and you might be surprised at the number of other afghani restaurants). the food has a lot yogurt in it, but its all very savory and delicious. i had a chicken curry dish and my boyfriend had the pumpkin dish, both of which were wonderful. the prices were quite reasonable. more

Thumbs up! 7/9/2002

I'm not adventurous when it comes to food, but my bf convinced me to try this place. I was happy that he did. Once you walk into this place, it's like you're not at St Marks anymore. It's cozy, and private, clean and pleasant. Definately recommended! more

fun, for a change 5/20/2002

If you're sick of the East Village Indian dives, check out this variation on similar spices, but done to another culture's specifications. Best of all, they've got a bar, so no need to BYOB. more
