Exquisite, original, complex yet not-too-complex Italian that pleases all the senses and finds undiscovered ones to seduce. The Cappuccino of Chestnuts, Wild Pheasant, and Chanter...

The only thing Italian about this restaurant is the name ""fiamma"" or flame. The wine list is large but ridiculously overpriced, and just because truffles are an Italian delicac...

Leave us alone! 10/22/2003

I recently took a friend for his birthday. I found the service to be overbearing and intrusive. The wait staff makes it virtually impossible to have a private conversation, which is a shame because the room was relatively quiet. I excused myself from my table went downstairs to inform the hostess that I would like to suprise my dinner guest by recognizing his birthday in a very understated way. They recommended writing Happy Birthday in chocolate on his dessert plate. I agreed. However when I returned to my table the waiter immediately came over and said ""So I guess we are celebrating a birthday here"". That would be ok at a restaurant half the price but my check was over $400. for two. This I feel makes it inexcusable. Dessert aririved with the writing and a candle UGH!. Pros: Good Food, Nice Decor Cons: Inept Service, Expensive more

Head to Fiamma for a great night! 10/11/2003

Went to Fiamma the other night and it was amazing. Fiamma provides delicious Italian food, a wonderful ambiance, impeccable service, and an overall great dining experience--all without appearing to try too hard or being pretentious. Out of a party of five people, none of them had anything negative at all to say about any part of the night. As a matter of fact, they couldn't stop raving. All agreed it was some of the best Italian food New York has to offer. Top it all off with perfect...perfect Torta dessert. And, while you obviously go for the food, it's the service that keeps you coming back. My father asked the busboy if he knew the final score of the Yankees-Red Sox game. The busboy said he didn't know, but moments later, our waitress approached us and told him the score. Enjoy. more

Beautiful place, laughable wine list 9/28/2003

The food was good, service was very attentive, although they try a little too hard (interrupt a lot). The place is absolutely gorgeosu, but the wine list...come on, we dine out a lot and even at Le Cirque you can find a decent bottle for under $45. This place had 90% of the wines costing 3 figures, and not because they were wonderful wines, but because they are overpriced. (Believe me, we know). However, make sure you save room for dessert...they are heavenly. Pros: decoration, Desserts Cons: overpriced wine list, Intrusive service more

Perfection 9/15/2003

Fiamma was FABULOUS. Some of the best service in town. My waiter attended to our every need without being intrusive. The decor was sexy and elegant at the same time. The pastas were all homemade and delicious. The fish was a fresh and very tasty. All together Fiamma had it down, everything was perfect from the moment we walked in to the chocolates given to us with our bill. Pros: great service, wine list more

new favourite 9/14/2003

My boyfriend took me to Fiamma last night and it is my new favourite restaurant! Right away, we were offered drinks and I got the highly addictive ""Fiamma"" cocktail, a delicious, seductive raspberry concoction. Then after being guided through the menu by the cute and smart waiter, our meal just blew me away. Scallops, kobe skirt steak, pasta with peas and proscuitto, strip steak, to name the highlights. And dessert.... and the vin santo... it was all too good for words! Everyone must try this fabulous italian hot spot! Pros: beautiful in all ways more

hot,hot, hot 9/14/2003

I was refered to this hot eatery by a friend of mine...my expectations were more than met. First we were warmly greeted by the attractive and witty staff. The upstairs lounge is beautiful...take time to have a drink there first. Great food, outstanding dessert. Fiamma, ""flame in Italian"" is hot, hot, hot. Pros: dessert, wine Cons: a bit noisy upstairs more

Pampered 9/10/2003

The servoce at Fiamma is better than ever. They are one of the few places that takes care of you without smothering you. The tables are a bit close together, but the food is great. Pros: service, wine list Cons: cramped more

mden 9/8/2003

What a great evening. From the wine and food recomendations to the superb food, they know how to take care of you. I take my clients and my friends. Dont leave without trying any of the pastas. more

Losing It 7/25/2003

I was here several months ago, just after the restaurant opened. It was fabulous. I just went last week, and I'm sorry to say they are losing it drastically. The food is still great, other than that -- what a nightmare. We had to wait 45 minutes, WITH a reservation and it was only a weeknight. The wine list is more extensive and expensive and more bland. The sommelier was annoying and extremely unhelpful. The appetizer took forever to get there and then are entrees came before we had finished them. I think the Chef here has a great thing going and knows his food. I think they need to get their act back together and showcase this a little better. I'm spending way too much money to be annoyed. I won't go back, and would highly caution my friends about the place as well. Pros: Food Cons: Unreliable Seating, overpriced winelist more

great food / horrible service 7/10/2003

What a wonderful restaurant with a unique menu. Unfortunately the waitress was horrific, and the sommelier doesn't have a clue about Italian wines...That shouldn't be the case when you're spending a few hundred dollars for meal. more

OK 7/5/2003

I prefer dining on the second floor (as opposed to the ground level). The space is larger and the atmosphere is more relaxed. It's a bit unoriginal to order the squab, but it is a very fine dish. Pros: Hip, Fine Food more

Exceptional 5/12/2003

Fiamma is now my favorite spot in NYC. I have been four times over the past year and each and every time I walk out of there I can't believe how good my meal was. The pastas are exceptional, the fish very flavorful as is the meat and desserts are a special treat. The wine list is wonderful, but pricey. While this is an expensive dining experience, it is always memorable, which can't often be said about other NY restaurants of the same $$ league. Fiamma is well worth it! Pros: food, service, decor more

Setting the bar very high... 5/11/2003

Fiamma continues to set the bar extremely high for Italian restaurants in the US. The decor straddles intimate and formal such that its a setting that will work very well for a romantic dinner or business engagement. The service is knowledgeable and attentive. The wine selection is exceptionally deep, though a bit pricey. FIAMMA IS ALL ABOUT THE FOOD. There is no Italian restaurant in NY that can compete with Michael White's cuisine. His pastas are exceptional and extremely fresh - try the various raviolis and the Stracci. The fish is very fresh and delicately prepared, and the Veal Chop is flavorful but not too large and overwhelming. The flavors are the key and they are diverse, subtle, and memorable. Importantly, Chef White does not make the mistake that so many Italian restaurants in the US do by over complicating the cuisine. Great Italian cuisine is simple, yet flavorful. Bravo! more

EXCEPTIONAL 5/2/2003

My parents and I dined here last week and had a lovely time. Our server was available and attentive, the sommelier was helpful and engaging, and the food was excellent! The atmosphere was chic: dining rooms on 3 stories with red, black, and candlelight motif. It is a restaurant for a special occasion... we had a wonderful time, and would love to go back! Pros: great service, in style, wine list Cons: $$$$ more

Great Service, Good Food 4/24/2003

I was impressed with how well we were attended to at the restaurant. The food was good, but nothing spectacular. Loved the atmosphere and the extensive wine list. more

Cool and Slick 3/18/2003

Come here to wow yourself. There is hip bar to drink at to coll you down. The atmosphere is the best I've seen. It has hip, chasian look, even though its italian. I had a great grilled octopus for appetizer, and we all shared some pasta, and I had te Cod for Dinner. Very light. They have a good dessert menu, however it is lacking, chocolate my favorite. I would defiantely recommend. more

Not exactly Italian food 3/14/2003

The only thing Italian about this restaurant is the name ""fiamma"" or flame. The wine list is large but ridiculously overpriced, and just because truffles are an Italian delicacy, it doesn't mean you should be putting them on every dish. There are a few good Italian restaurants in this city but this is not one of them. However, if you are B&T please go. Pros: large wine list Cons: Bland, Overpriced wine list more

Swordfish Roll 2/10/2003

Fiamma's pasta with lobster and shrimp is excellent as is the Swordfish dish. Never have I had swordfish as good as this, probably the tastiest thus far. I do not care for the bass or the pasta with shaved truffles. Great atmosphere and great neighborhood you can go to the Thompson hotel for drinks prior and when it gets warmer on the rooftop bar. The room on the 3rd floor is the absolut perfect spot for a private party do hip and great service. Pros: pastas, atmosphere, large party room more

Generic Upscale Italian Restaurant 2/6/2003

It serves decent italian food, has great service, and spots a clean, comtemporary decor....but it feels generic -- lacking in character and passion. My dining experience here was pleasant enough but this is not a restaurant I would feel compel to come back for another visit. It never drew me in from the moment I stepped into the foyer. Pros: Decent Food, Great Service, Clean Decor Cons: Generic, Uninspired more

break from the usual 2/4/2003

Found it to be the ideal way to cap off an ""alternative"" day. Saw an independent film (""Morvern Callar""), finished off an independent book (""Only in America"" by John Soltez)... met a couple friends here and capped off the ""alternative"" day. What a change from the expected -- first off, the Fiamma makes for a nice ""alternative"" cocktail, and the Garganelli plate reminded me of nothing I'd had before. Earthy, not too garlicky. Even the shrimp departed from the standard scampiness you're all too used to encounter. At the risk of sounding ""expected,"" I'll say save room for dessert, again a departure from the standard Tirami towers. A different take on the cuisine that costs a little more, but worth it if you want something fresh. Pros: different, top ingredients more
