Excellent Experience!!!! 12/9/2010

Last saturday, I had a date with a cute boy from Barcelona, Spain. He took me to his favorite tapas restaurant, 1492. I was very excited. Our reservation was at 9pm and we sat down 10 min after. It was busy and loud, the hostess gave us a table next to a bachelorette party and I saw those ladys staring at my boy!!!!. I didn't care so much after I try the tasty sandria and let loose after 3 glasses, my date order the Serrano ham plate, spicy potatoes croquettes and the lamb chops with red wine sauce, then Seafood Paella. Everything was delicious. Our waitress made sure our glasses of sangria were full all the time. They had a Dj at the bar, so after dinner we continue our interesting and fun night. having two more drinks and mixing up with the crowd. At that point I felt pretty much buzzed and enjoying myself Great service!!! Excellet food and atmosphere. Fun Music... I'll go back for sure!!! more

great place 10/31/2010

We went to 1492 on Saturday night for dinner. The outside area was closed so we sat inside. We thought the service was excellent, our glasses were kept full the entire time, our food came out quickly and the staff were all very friendly. That being said, there were only two other tables occupied in the place, which may explain why the service was so attentive? We ordered a few pitchers of sangria, several tapas and an order of paella. The sangria was good (although it could have used a little more alcohol). Every one of the tapas we ordered were excellent, as good as or better then many of the other tapas places we've been to in the city. The paella was good but not great. Desert was delicious (chocolate molten cake). Overall, good atmosphere, food, service and would definitely go back again. more

Has Roaches 7/5/2010

I was eating at the bar and as I finished the lamb, a roach hopped up and crawled across the bar. If this was L.A. they would have an ""F"" in the window. I contacted the owner and never heard back from them. Which only leads me to think they didn't do anything about the problem. I love the food there and if you don't care that roaches made it all the way to the bar and crawl across the counter, by all means, eat here. But if they are in the front, I would hate to see what's in the back or even worse, what crawls out when the lights go out. Eat at your own risk. I will NEVER eat here again. Pros: Food Awesome! Cons: Roaches Not. more

Worst service ever 7/12/2009

I am shocked this restaurant has received such rave reviews from people. Our dinner was ruined by the horrible french waitress at this place....it was my second time, she's looked always tired and nervious. I would rather buy my drinks than deal with the horrible wait for a table and rude staff. When I asked why everything was taking so long, the waitress actually responded it's like in spain Apparently this restaurant heyday is over...too many people and too poor of a manager. Avoid it. Pros: Garden, mojoto, Tapas Cons: service more

good spanish food 4/28/2009

Coming from Spain, I'm always very sceptical about eating 'home"" food out of the country, but I must say I was very pleasantly surprised when I went into this restaurant with a couple of friends.\r There is a lot to choose from on the menu, and the food is fresh and well done.\r On the downside, service is a bit chaotic and rushed. Pros: food, music, ambience Cons: service more

EXCELLENT!! 2/16/2009

I usually NEVER write reviews, just too much trouble.... however, I did a seach for the place online to confirm the address (going there again with freinds for dinner) and came accross the listing in Citysearch.... I was SHOCKED to find that anyone could have given this place a rating under 5 (4 if you feel the prices are a tad on the higher side). \r \r So to set the record straight..... Yes, it's a tad bit pricier than it could be, but WORTH it. The food, is FRESH, DELICIOUS and the variety is AWESOME! The portion sizes are generous and the biggest problem is knowing what to order.... everything is so tempting.\r \r So, enjoy your meal there and I know after you go, you'll also be back here to give them the ""*****"" they deserve. \r \r Pros: Excellent food & variety... biggest problem-- what to oder Cons: A tad pricy, but worth it more

Great for Groups 8/2/2008

I brought a big, loud, boisterous group here for a bachelorette party and it couldn't have been a more perfect experience. They had a big table inside ready for us, but happily seated us outside when I asked, and they even seated us before our complete party had arrived when I told them some people were running late. I had a reservation for ten but a couple extra joined us - no problem. They just let us pull up more chairs. They even let us smoke! (We were seated far enough away from the other tables for it not to bother anyone.) We ordered multiple rounds of sangria and tapas and everything arrived promptly (and was deeeee-licious. Meat lollipops? Seriously? Best idea EVER). It ended up being pretty reasonable, too - we were pleasantly surprised. If you're looking for a fun place for a big group on a summer night, definitely ask for the big table in the back! Pros: service, atmosphere, bacon-wrapped dates Cons: ? more

very disappointing service! it actually ruins the nice atmosphere. 7/11/2008

my boyfriend and i were in the neighborhood and came across 1492. hearing that it was wonderful, we decided to walk in and get a table for 5 (we had a couple of people meeting us). the rude manager would only give us a table for two and insisted that the women next to us would leave soon (the restaurant was not crowded at all and had numerous tables left) and we could have their table. 40 minutes into our drinks, the women were still not finished and our friends had walked in. the manager approached the table 4 more times rushing the women out. meanwhile, our friends are standing next to our table because they will not allow us to simply move to a 4-5 person table near. with rude remarks from the waitstaff and no acknowledgment of our table for the rest of the time there, we requested the bill. we were done with this place. we had to request the bill 5 additional times!!!! we ran out of there as fast as we could; however, before we could even escape....yet another patron (that we did not know) had to walk up to the rude manager and asked if they could place their order after sitting there for 30 minutes. apparently we were not the only ones with TERRIBLE service. Pros: nice atmosphere, great chocolate fondant cake Cons: WAIT STAFF AND MANAGER!!!!!! more

One of my NYC favorites! 11/5/2007

I adore 1492 ... every time I go the food is amazing, the ambience is lovely and the staff is the best. The chorizo lollypops are on my top 5 foods list - sooo good. Steak chimichurri, shrimps w/ jalepenos, croquettes, etc ... and a few bottles of rioja. Order up a bunch of tapas, share some wine and have a great time. Perfect date spot. more

Awesome place! 8/26/2007

I looove this place! My friend took me here last Friday and it was incredible! the food, the decor, the staff was exactly what I imagine a tapas bar in Spain to be like. I simply loved the outdoor seating -truly made me feel like I was outside of the city on a beautiful summer night. Additionally, the sangria was delicious and portions large enough to share. Pros: charming, yummy, and reasonable Cons: service was a bit slow more

Great food presentation..... 3/12/2007

and it goes beyond that. The food is tasty some could be better but all in all dining at 1492 was a good experience. I enjoyed the anchovies, pulpo, gambas and steak over potatoes. The lollipop I didnt like too much. The appetizer sampler is the way to go :) then order more after tasting. And yes there is also a dessert sampler. Delish! Pros: well spaced tables, service Cons: Parking specially on weekends more

I dont know 12/22/2006

better-but pricier than the other ""tapas"" on clinton- it is \r a strange place... the staff is desorganized and undertrained\r about the menu and wine list, but kind of end up winning you\r with their atitude. the food is good and tasty but some dishes are just \r not good no mater how you look at it (aka fiteuda-spelling?) the wine \r list is a big plus! but again, the staff is undretrained.\r mix all of it and is actually funn... and then it becomes frustrating....and \r then funn again and so own until you leave. so I dont know more

Some good, some bad 11/13/2006

I have mixed feelings about this place. For one, I think 11pm is way too early for a restaurant in NYC to close. I also think that the portions are way too small for how much they charge for them. Yes, they are tapas but the point of tapas is to be able to order as many dishes as possible in order to have a good selection and at these prices it makes it somewhat prohibitive. The baby eels and the squid, also the dates wrapped in bacon are very tasty but the octopus was tough and a bit bland. I have never ordered entrees, just tapas so I have no opinion about them but I have to agree with some other reviewers that they take too long to bring the food and the check and the waitstaff seem like they couldn't care less if you live or die. It is close to where I stay in NYC so I have gone a few times, but I'd rather go elsewhere in the future. Pros: Good location Cons: Too small for even tapas, overpriced, bad service more

One of the best overall dining experiences in the city 7/31/2006

One of my favorite places. Great food (the bacon wrapped dates and the garlic shrimp are to die for), great drink (I reccomend white wine sangria), and and amazing staff who make you feel comfortable and really quite at home. \r \r I've enjoyed every meal, but none more so than the party I threw here just last Friday. Stephen (the owner? Manager?) was wonderful. He accomodated 18 people, worked out a prefixe menu with our tastes in mind, and made sure we had the best of everything. So you can add great for large groups to my list as well!\r \r And did I mention how affordable it all is? Pros: Food, Service, Ambience Cons: I can't think of one more

Favourite place 6/22/2006

Love the place. You will feel right at home or on vacation in Spain.\r Great and joyful staff, nice selection of tapas. Food is amazing, it is like in Spain. However, from time to time, I would welcome to see a change on the menu - since I know the menu upside down. Pros: Ambience more

Spain arrives to the Lower East Side! 5/7/2006

Under new management, the Lower East Side is getting a taste of true authentic Spanish cuisine. Starting with the sangria that offers the perfect blend of specially selected Spanish wine and fresh fruits, the first sip will surely take you back to Spain. The Calamares Romana cooked meticulously and I dare anyone to find calamari prepared this well for under $10. The Solomillo is a carefully cooked asparagus wrapped with succulent filet mignon. The 1492 tasting is the super bowl of all tapas because there is something for everyone in this carefully selected surf-meets-turf dish (the oyster was dressed with a topping that left me speechless). The Ximenez 1971 dessert wine was the ultimate companion to the selection we ordered. The flan is prepared the way the Spaniards intended and the chocolate souffle made our lady companions devour every spoonful. Pros: Ambience, Food, Growing wine menu more

Subpar 4/21/2006

Awful paella. I woke up this morning in desperate need for anything- ANYTHING- good to eat after the awful dinner last night at 1492. Places like this make you think twice about being adventurous. We walked in to try something new since Falai next door couldn't seat us until much later. The seafood paella was bland and all the seafood was well overcooked. The wine list was nothing special and the waitress barely attended to us. Simply put - it wasn't worth it at all. Cons: Bad food, Service, Expensive more

Great food, reasonable prices 3/9/2006

So many reviews cited bad food, but I don't know what they're talking about. I also surveyed many of my friends (self-professed tapas snobs), and they really like this place. Some dishes are a little bland, a little salt does the trick, as opposed to overly salty & greasy places like Pippa. I *love* the bacon-wrapped dates. Serrano ham croquettes, seafood paella, paella valenciana, shrimp in garlic (gambas al ajillo), spanish frittata with alioli sauce are all excellent. Bud the cod & mushroom croquettes are mushy and tasteless. Desserts are also good - tried all 4. Very accommodating for a dinner party of 13 on a Saturday night. Romantic - wood tables and chairs softly lit with candles, with additional room in the back. One of my new favorites. Pros: Food, Ambience, Service more

Something has happened 10/1/2005

This place used to be great, lived around the corner ate here all the time. Went last night to sit in the garden - which is lovely - but the food was terrible. Had Lentil soup, Spinach Croqettes, Gambas al Ajillio (shrimp) Chipirones a la Plancha (grilled squid), Patatas Tres Salsas (french fires w/ 3 sauces) and a side of Spinach. Bad food, over priced, bad service. So many great new restaurants with really good food and less expensive. Don't go here. Pros: no wait b/c bad food, garden , Cons: food, service , value more

Not just another tapas spot. 9/19/2005

Everyone seems to be doing tapas nowadays, so I was weary of coming here, but I am glad I did. This is the real thing, as authentic as it can get in NYC. I've had many great Tapas experiences in Madrid and this place brought back a lot of fond memories. The two of us shared very flavorful wild mushroom croquetas, classic marinated anchovies, garlic-y grilled prawns and a generous arugula/quince paste/manchego salad - all of it was satisfying. We did find the chorizo, artichoke and manchego torta a tad unbalanced and a little too oily, but it didn't spoil our experience. And we had some of the best Mojitos in town, delicate and consistent, not the sugary mess often found in other bars and restaurant. Excellent and friendly service too. One of my new faves. Pros: Food, Service, Drinks more
