Best Chinese on UES 8/2/2006

This is THE place to come if you want great Chinese food. It is one of the few Chinese restaurants where I have seen many Chinese families dining on the UES. That says a lot to me - if it's good enough for them, it must be good, and authentic. They have an array of dishes you won't see in most other restaurants - above and beyond the normal dishes (though they have those, too, even if you don't see them printed on the menu, just ask.) Service is great, decor is amiable, you will have a great meal. more

Wonderfully authentic food 2/24/2006

You may not understand the flavors and dishes here the first few times, because we have been so conditioned to quasi-Chinese fast food. But just give it a few visits and you'll understand what real Chinese food is. You can't go wrong with their lunch specials ($6.95), either. You most likely will have some leftovers for a snack later. Yum... more

Authentic chinese food on the upper east side 9/20/2005

If you're looking for real good quality chinese food, not your run of the mill crappy take out, then this is the place for you. Their menu includes lots of exotic stuff like frogs legs, but almost everything I've tasted has been excellent. Service is fine - I've noticed that the service is exponentially better if you're dining with a native Chinese speaker (just a tip). But even if you speak no Chinese, you'll be in for some excellent food! more

Upper East Side Twin of our Favorite New York Chinese 2/16/2005

The Midtown Wu Liang Ye is our favorite New York Chinese restaurant. This upper East Side twin is perhaps a shade less tasty, but it is also roomier and less crowded. Here's what I had to say about the midtown restaurant (which basically holds true here too): Wu Liang Ye is our favorite Chinese restaurant in New York. If you like real Szechuan food, this is the place. We usually get the Dan Dann noodles, doubled fried pork, bang bang chicken, or eggplant, along with dou miau (snow pea shoots, pronounced more like dom yaou; not on the menu but usually available if you ask). Just be prepared for more than a little heat. But it is absolutely delicious. more
