My mom, gone now 10 years, loved this store. Born in Naples before World War I, my mother was an expert on Italian food. She seldom spoke Italian at home, but even in her later years, she would start chatting, ordering, joking in her native tongue the second she entered the place. One time, the counter man asked her where she lived. Her house was in Bergen County with a view of NYC. But she told them she lived in the "woods." A NYC girl at heart, New Jersey was clearly not her beloved City.
We would make the trip on Sunday mornings because this place has it all. The best meat, bread, cheese, olives (to die for), salads, canned specialties and cooked foods. On the way home, more than once, we would start eating hunks of bread or the green olives.
The store is a throwback to a time when these stores were everywhere.
You should go and eat something you have never eaten before. You'll thank me and you'll make my mother happy. She loved to feed guests.
