Your ability to enjoy the Cloisters will hinge largely on your ability to imagine yourself as a completely different person, one whose life is governed not by a Blackberry and tonight's TV programming but by the unchanging seasons and intense spiritual devotion.
Why? Because the artwork itself is attractive but not nearly so beautiful as that from later eras. What's truly fascinating is the mindset that created the artwork and the lifestyle of the Middle Ages.
Granted, it's pretty hard for a modern-day New Yorker (or visitor) to get into that mindset, but the audio guide does a pretty good job getting you there. If you're really dedicated, read "Mont Saint Michele and Chartres" by Henry Adams before you go. Most of all, if you can possibly go alone, then do that. Nothing pulls you back into this century like someone you know talking about modern concerns.
Pros: beautiful art and architecture
Cons: hard to get to

While the Humane Society has many goals on its roster for the betterment of animals, they also provide low-cost veterinary services for all kinds of pets. The people here are obviously passionate about pets and it shows in their handling and care of your pet during exams. I have the utmost confidence in the staff at this facility. The only downside is that it can be tough to get an emergency appointment, so you may have to consider an alternative, such as a private veterinarian.
In addition, if you make an appointment, you will be charged an additional $30 which is non-refundable if you change to a weekday or cancel. But the good thing is that it's considered a donation to help their cause.

I invite anyone who hasn't been to the Big Apple to visit the city during November to January when the city is dressed up for the holidays. There are too many events to list in just one review but I promise if you visit, you won't be disappointed. New York comes alive at Christmas and you won't want to miss any of the fun.
Walking is the best way to enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the city as you can begin anywhere and proceed at your own pace. Stop along the way to ooh and aah the festive lights and decorations, shop windows, restaurants, street displays and of, course the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree at 47th Street (this year's tree lighting is November 29th at 7PM and marks the official start of the holiday season in NYC).
My favorite events include the Holiday Fair in Vanderbilt Hall at Grand Central Station, attending a performance of The Nutcracker at the New York State Theater at Lincoln Center, shopping in the East Village, Soho and along Madison Avenue, watching the Radio City Rockettes, and viewing the spectacular department store windows at Lord & Taylor, Macy's, and Saks Fifth Avenue.
