A friend who used to live in Manhattan is in town visiting and suggested that we do something we have never done before -- cruise Times Square hotel bars after a show. I was game.
Our first stop was The Whiskey at the W in TS. What a trip. We arrived just before 10:30pm and had no problem getting in. By the time we left at 12:30am, there was a line at the door.
It is dark going down to the basement bar - leave your eyes some time to adjust. The dance floor will light them up at soon as you get inside. The colored squares reminded me of Saturday Night Fever updated (some of the squares have gel inside that moves around when someone steps on it). In a short time, the music went from bearable for conversation to way too loud (great for the dancers, not so great for the talkers). We stuck around for a couple of rounds ($30 will buy you 2 Amstels, a Stoli drink & your tip) before heading to our next spot.
We had fun. It is a different place to go -- you will see 20-somethings and 50-somethings on the dance floor; some couples and some cruising for a date. It's not going to become my Thursday night spot, but I wouldn't mind popping in every once in a blue moon.
