check the basement 5/31/2006

The upstairs offerings of Canal Jeans aren't terribly exciting or different than the rest of the stores on broadway. You can stop by any of the other storefronts and largely see the same clothing for about the same prices. The reason I keep checking back at Canal is the basement where the discounted jeans are. The styles are definately out of season and some of the cheeper racks are refurbished but if you're looking for jeans to god forbid, get dirty in, this would probably be your best bet. I've picked up some jeans for $5 a pair. Think I cried when I got chain grease from my bicycle all over them? more

Cheap jeans, any size 2/7/2006

This is the main store for this Company, which has been around for years. They do not carry designer material, but they do carry good jeans at very affordable prices for the area. They also carry t-shirt and other casual in a large variety of sizes. Crowded would not be the word here, but packed would be. And the service is more akin to an assembly line than customer service, but if you need a pair of jeans and you don't want to spend a small fortune locally, this is the place. I have to say the assortment of styles and sizes is very good, so it was worth the trip for me. more

Not what it used to be. 1/5/2006

Let me date myself and say that when first discovered Canal Jean Co, Soho was still cheap and they still had a store on Canal Street. While never the place to go the trendiest jeans, not what I wanted anyway, I could always find a pair of inexpensive jeans and somewhat bohemian styles. When I took my 18 year old there recently, the place was cramped crowded and customer service was non existent. She eventually gave up. She later returned on her own and said that even during the week, mid afternoon, the place was crowded. more

Jeans! 12/18/2005

Can't really find anything bad to say about this jean shop. It's in a great location while you're wandering in lower Manhattan. As they specialize in denim, you get what you expect. They have plenty of styles to choose from, as well as other clothing to purchase. Some of it you can find in department stores but there are much more vintage and the popular "distressed" designs to choose from. Prices are average for the area. more

very hip 10/14/2005

This store used to be very cool in the old days, when it was on Canal Street. It still is cool, but in a different way. They have an awesome jean selection. Lots of crazy outfits that will suit the most bizarre tastes. I wouldn't say they are trendy, in terms of keeping up today's fashion, but they cater to the alternative quite well. I used to get jackets and shirts here for ultra low prices. more

funky clothes 8/29/2005

Canal Jean Company certainly has jeans -- but has lots of other funky clothes as well. The style is primarily vintage -- sort of an "East Village" look and feel. The prices are generally reasonable. The dressing rooms are small and there are not enough of them. The staff is hit or miss -- sometimes helpful, sometimes not. more

Mega clothing store 8/21/2005

This downtown shopping favorite is absolutely huge. Canal Jean Co. has all types of clothing for both men and women. They also carry an interesting selection of cheap vintage clothing and a section of old military wear. When I was young punk I was all about Canal Jean Co. Prices are modest to cheap. They have all sorts of stuff so look high and low and keep an open mind. more

Icon of jean shops 8/20/2005

If you need jeans, this is the place to look. They have a large selection and inventory of it. All sizes, colors and styles you’ll find here. They also sell other clothing apparel like shirts and jackets but I guess the main focus and what made them popular are their jeans. I usually don’t like this shop here often as its kind of overrated and the workers aren’t so nice But when I’m in the need for a new pair of jeans this would be the first place I looked. Though you most likely won’t be able to find the high priced designers here, it’s still a good place to start. more
