Village Chess Shop

Placed an order, and spent the following months emailing and calling Village Chess Shop to attempt to understand the status of my order. I was told a different story each time the phone was picked up, ranging from 'Oh - that's your chess set over there!' to 'Oh yes, your chess set, that's being made right now and we're expecting it next week.' Judging from posts which have appeared on the internet since I placed my order it seems that this is not an uncommon occurrence. I regret giving these guys the benefit of the doubt and not organising a bank refund sooner. Unfortunately I was swayed by so many positive reviews of the shop experience. Please do not order from this shop, and I would suggest that even their in store customers might question the ethics of a business that treats their customers in this way. more

I am just writing to report that the owner of this store, Michael Propper, has been very unethical in his relationship with my company. We shipped him quite a few of our Domino Sets over the past several years and, after many excuses and delays, he is simply refusing to pay our bills for this merchandise. He has said he doesn't "stiff" his vendors, but that is what he is doing to us. We have sent the matter to collection, but he has said "sue me", thinking, I suppose, that the amount he owes us $1389, is too small to warrant litigation. We are still deciding whether to take him to court. But I think it might be of value to his customers and potential customers to know that this store is run by a man who made a profit selling products he received from me and then refused to pay for these products. This review is ONLY for their online orders, never been to the actual shop. DO NOT place online orders with them. Appalling "customer service", never delivered goods, virtually no reply to communications. Wouldn't even do the refund they told me they'd do. Had to get my bank involved to get my money back. Ordered two weeks before I got the bank involved. I contacted them 3 times by email and 4 times by phone. They only contacted me once by email and twice by phone. The returned phone called were only after I said I'd report the fraud if they didn't call back. I called once and they were "ringing up a customer" and promised to call right back. I called back an hour later, they didn't pick up. I called right back with a *67 and they picked up. more

This is a decent store to go to for chess. They offer a large number of vintage chess sets, made of ivory, wood, plastic or whatever you can imagine. In addition to the store service they offer pay play with professional and amateur players in the area. This is a nice place to go for chess afffianado. more
