I recently took a class led by Chef Loren. He was condescending and rude, treating us like underperforming students. At $100 a person for the class, I was disappointed and angered...

Don't go hungry! 5/17/2012

I signed up for this class with a large group of friends. The price tag for the evening was $160 per person for 3 hours (dinner and wine and beer). We were hoping to get both a lesson and dinner. Unfortunately, we got very litte of either. The lesson consisted of the chef telling us the menu and there was not enough food to go around at the end of the meal. We ended up having to get pizza afterwards! I'd say skip it and cook in your own kitchen. more

maggots in rice 11/20/2010

I took a basic techniques course and during the second class we found maggots in the wild rice. As if this wasn't bad enough, the oven my group was assigned to use was completely under calibrated. I called the next day to complain and was told by management that they would look into it and get back to me. In spite of repeated calls, they never responded. I would never recommend this place. more

This is the Best Culinary School in all of NYC 8/6/2009

I love cooking and I love to learn how to make myself a better chef so I take cooking classes all the time. I have gone to many culinary schools here in New York and I must say The Institute is the best! I try to take at least two of their classes every month the staff is amazing! I have become twice the chef I used to be thanks to The Institute of Culinary Education!!! more

Amazing Classes 7/15/2009

I took several of the recreational classes here with some friends. We took Beer & Meats, Introduction to the Wine Regions of France, and Home Entertaining: Dinner Party. The classes were so fun and really helpful, the instructors were terrific and so helpful. I have learned so much about cooking this summer it is almost unbelievable. I just threw my first dinner party over the weekend and i used the recipes that i learned in class. It was a smashing success! These classes are so worth it if you are serious about expanding your culinary knowledge! Pros: Great Classes & Great Teachers! more

not *quite* as advertised..... 12/26/2007

The class I attended only slightly resembled the description posted on-line. And, they had allowed 23 students into a kitchen that maybe should have held 12-14. It was an absolute mess. People were bumping into each other trying to find ingredients and equipment. When I spoke with the staff about the situation, I was told they couldn't offer any alternative other than a credit toward a future (presumably bad) experience. But, I was welcome to call back during office hours to seek another alternative. I did....but was dropped into voice mail. Watch their cancellation policy too. It's designed to support their inflexible (and some would say hostile) customer service model. Cons: inaccurate description of course; poorly operated and harsh customer service policies more

Terrible customer service 9/5/2007

I recently took a class led by Chef Loren. He was condescending and rude, treating us like underperforming students. At $100 a person for the class, I was disappointed and angered - especially because this was supposed to be a GIFT to the person attending with me. My e-mail to the school explaining my experience has gone unanswered. Pros: Good food at the end of class, some cooking techniques to be learned Cons: Incredibly rude chef leading the class. Not for casual cooks. Stressful and not fun. more

A Cutting Edge Cooking School in the heart of NYC! 3/7/2007

Highly recommend taking classes here if you are looking to really learn a thing or two about cooking. The school is extremely well designed, clean and modern. The teachers were very informative and I took away cooking lessons I would have never learned watching Rachel Ray on TV! Pros: modern, clean, fun, professional, informative more

Great Recreational Classes 12/22/2004

This place provides great cooking classes with lots of food provided. The class I attended was cancelled due to the rooms being overbooked. That was the only disappointment. This should be managed better. They did give us a free one day class and a credit of $107 towards any other class. Pros: Great instructors, Lots of food provided more

Truly AWESOME! 2/11/2003

The Institue of Culinary Education has evolved out of the former Peter Kumps Cooking School - and what an evolution it has been! I have been both a recreational and a pro-am student there for years and LOVE it. The facilities, instructors, ingredients and administrative staff are all excellent. DO NOT MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN FROM THE BEST! more
