It's light as air. I also love the fennel and arugula salad. FYI, the place is cash only. Love the bohemian/neighborhoody vibe and the outside seating on summer evenings.

Do not get the calamari! 12/14/2008

I went there a couple of days ago with a friend for a late lunch. We ordered calamari as a starter. From the menu, we assumed it'd be normal fried calamari, but when it arrived, it wasn't what we had expected. It wasn't covered in batter at all and had a green pesto-looking sauce over it. We thought we'd try it anyway. Both of us found it to taste really fishy despite the sauce covering it up. I had around 2 pieces and then my stomach started to hurt as well. We complained about it to the waiter and asked them to exchange the plate for dessert or something, but the waiter said that we had eaten too much of it! We had both eaten two pieces each. He then had the audacity to ask whether we'd like it wrapped up in a box to go! more

New ownership, recently gone very downhill. 5/7/2008

Until very recently, I loved this place. The food and wine were wonderful and the service was friendly. Pros: Memories of what it used to be. Cons: Sloppy and tasteless food, incompetent service, and lack of employee hygiene more

Best Overall!! 2/23/2008

Max Soha is my all time favorite restaurant. I went on my first date there five years ago and haven't stopped going there. They are most famously known for their incredible home made pasta lasagna, but there simple tomato sauce is what makes this place so special. The tomatoes they use are incredibly fresh, as well as their bruschetta. I have to say, I have tried almost everything on the menu once, including their amazingly fruity sangria to their scrumptious desserts! I have even asked them to cater my wedding one day!!! :o) Pros: Amazing food, drink and dessert! Cons: Small environment more

Lamb Ragu! 1/8/2008

I've enjoyed every meal that I've had at Max Soha, but the spaghetti with lamb ragu is definitely the best. Although summertime is best when you can sit outside, Max Soha is consistently delicious and staff are always friendly. It's pretty far uptown, but considering that the prices are unbelievably affordable, you can splurge on a cab! Pros: Affordable, patio seating, lamb ragu Cons: somewhat cramped inside more

Lack of service overshadows fairly decent food 5/7/2007

There are plenty of other cramped, drafty Italian eateries that you can go to to be ignored by your wait person and you don't have to go all the way to the 120's on Amsterdam. However, if you really don't want to pay much for your fairly decent Italian, I guess you'll just have to endure the charmless staff and elbow bumping. Pros: Price for quality of food Cons: Service and space more

Really Good Lamb Ragu 3/2/2007

If you go to Max Soha, definitely order the lamb ragu with spaghetti ($9.95). It is by far their best dish. All the other dishes are either decent or misses, but trust me, it is worth it to go to Max Soha just for this dish. I love the ambiance and the staff is great as well. And they must be doing something right...Columbia students and professors go there frequently. Friday nights have a long wait, but you won't be disappointed Pros: Really good lamb ragu Cons: Long waits, no credit cards more

Every dish was worse than the last 11/27/2006

Went to Max Soha last night with a bunch of friends to celebrate a birthday. Most dishes we tried were near flavorless and the pasta dishes were extremely chewy. The bread pudding was as hard as a rock and also lacking flavor. On a positive note, the service was adequate. Oh, and the large ""cash only"" signs definitely provided a certain ambiance - and a reminder that there was no way you could challenge the credit card charge for the awful food. Pros: None that come to mind Cons: Awful food, disinterested service more

Best Gnochhi Around! 12/8/2005

This is my favorite restaurant in the area, by far. The waiters are wonderful and even take the time to get to know you. Everything on the menu is wonderful. My only problem is that the gnocchi is so good, I can't seem to order anything else! The bread and dipping sauce they provide is amazing. A must if you are in the area. Pros: Amazing Pasta, Friendly, European feel more

Best restaurant in Morningside Heights 11/20/2005

One of my favorites in the area -- fantastic Italian food that's not expensive at all. It's dimly lit, and would be really romantic (if it wasn't so crowded). In the summer, you can ask to be seated outside, and even if it there's no particular view, it's tons of fun. The waiters and waitresses are always attentive. Personal favorite: the gnocchi. The only downside is the wait: expect to spend at least 20 minutes in line! Pros: Fantastic food, inexpensive Cons: Long wait more

the best small italian place around 8/1/2005

the food is simple and incredible tasting. the iced tea and wine list are delightful. with the exception of one slightly aloof but still efficient and civil waiter, the service is extraordinarily friendly. in fact, max has some of the best waiters around, especially the two guys from colombia--they rock! since i discovered it a few months ago, i've gone there to eat twice a week and can't think of a single bad thing to say about it. the bohemian atmosphere and non-servile staff might rub certain khaki-wearing family types with children in tow the wrong way, but leave them to the joyless corporate eateries of midtown! Pros: great food, friendly waiters, iced tea more

Sorry to say.... 7/4/2005

I have eaten out a great deal in the past 20 years and have come across many great little gems but Max Soha is not one of them. From the reception at the door to the rude service and etible food I was truly disappointed again. I don't think a third time will happen. Go at your own risk but take it from me there are much better places in the area. Cons: rude service, loud, not family friendly more

An Uptown Surprise - Downtown Feel 6/26/2005

The best surprise is when your not expecting one. I was tired of the same old, same old so I decided to go uptown, way uptown. It was a nice combination of good food, good service and a fun atmosphere. Their homemade pasta was al dente! Cons: Music was a tad loud more

Excellent food 5/29/2005

I just love this place. The food is delicious and inexpensive. I've been a frequent guest since I moved to the neighborhood. Their waiters are very personable and helpful, no complaints there. Overall, one of the most authentic Italian restaurants in the city. Pros: Food, Service, Value Cons: Small space more

Best Italian! 5/10/2005

I've never been a big fan of Italian food because the fare has never captured my attention, although I eat it quite often because my friends and family love Italian. However, I LOVE Max Soha and just may be my favorite restaurant in NYC. The creamed spinach and gnocchi is terrific, as is the lasagna. I don't understand why people said the staff is rude. Maybe that is because they are high-maintenance or rude clientele. They were extremely nice to me and very kind, each time i've gone. The small room makes the restaurant cozy and gives it it's atmosphere. GREAT PLACE Pros: atmosphere, food, service Cons: can't seat a lot more

It's so good! 4/20/2005
