great food; great service 10/8/2009

Davis, the bartender, knows EVERYTHING about the wines. Tell him what you like and he'll produce it. Food is consistently good - I am a neighborhood regular. My favorites are the oxtail ravioli, tuna, and the beef carpaccio. Pros: Low key, casual vibe, great food, nice people. Cons: Portions have gotten smaller - not quite the value it once w more

One of my favorite spots 10/14/2008

Excellent wine bar, great staff, cool vibe, and very good, well-priced food. Only drawbacks are when drunken uptown or non-East Village denizens arrive, or overflow from Il Bagatto next door and ruin the delicate vibe in there (it's small and it's easy to find oneself annoyed by loud, obnoxious lingerers who don't pick up on the enoteca vibe they're going for and treat the place like any other bar in the East Village. Best time to go is during the week for that reason. Pros: Service, food, wine selection, vibe Cons: Occasional overrun of drunken hipster crowd more

What happened to the Enoteca, Mama? 3/24/2007

By far, Il Posto Acanto has been the best kept wine bar secret in NY (and I fear sharing its name here may destroy that). No place could compare with its selection, its relatively mixed crowd (adults are often in attendance) and its civility. But something's happened. Lately, the bar has been loud and rowdy, something that belies its description on the wine bar menu (""We do not allow parties of more than 6, so that we may replicate the true Enoteca experience found in Rome..."" or something like that). Former bar keep used to recommend wines (excellent in their choices), then leave one alone (very much alone, I add thankfully) to one's own devices. Now, a new addition to the bar staff in particular feels the need to intrude (persistently) between your peace and quiet and that glass of nice wine you've just purchased. Why? Mama (the gregarious owner and chef of the restaurant next door) -- are you listening? Pros: wine selection, atmosphere, relative anonymity if you seek it Cons: seems to be going south... more

i must respond to the review above 12/14/2006

great wine, great food, great staff, great atmosphere...\r as for the reviewer above -- seven credit cards -- did you ask for seperate checks to begin with?? i would have yelled at you too! Pros: great wine, great food Cons: overflow crowd from il bagatto more

You couldn't pay me to go there again. 6/12/2006

I went with a party of 7, all of whom just started working together. We had a nice dinner - nice wait staff, kind of small portions, but good wine - and at the end each of us put in a credit card (i.e. 7 cards) to split the bill. I'll admit, it can be a pain to split it that many ways, but every restaurant in NY will do it. They end up making out on the tip anyway. All of a sudden the owner aggresively charges out of the back of the restaurant to yell at us that there is no way we can pay with 7 cards. We mention that it is a group of colleagues, many in from out of town, so we had all planned to pay separately. As I was the one being most directly yelled at by him, I tried to explain this to him, and asked him why he was insulting us. He responded, ""That wasn't me insulting you... THIS is me insulting you!"" as he literally got in my face. Finally he said they would take the cards, but he never wanted to see any of us in his restaurant again. He kicked us outside as soon as everyone had signed.\r \r At one point I asked one of the wait staff what the manager's problem was, and she responded that it was the owner, not the manager... I couldn't believer an owner would treat clientel like that. Never mind why someone would work for such a person, but I implore anyone who reads this to never, ever go to this place. People like this guy deserve to be out of business. Pros: wine Cons: owner more

Italian Perfection 2/3/2005

This is the best bar in New York City. It is awesome. The wine is fabulous and the sommiers are wonderful. They won't push the most expensive down your throat, but they'll help you get *good* stuff and they are super freindly. The atmosphere is perfect! It's causal, but nice. Not stuffy at all but not noisy and roudy. It is sooooooo great. It's my new favorite bar. If you like wine you *must* give it a go. You'll thank me. Pros: service, comfort, selection more

Truly Italian 12/27/2004

If you have travelled to Italy and find yourself yearning for the comfort of the country, then this place is for you. The wine list is fabulous and the bites to eat are wonderful. It's truly Italian -- so be ready for a cultural experience. If you are more comfortable with American versions of Italian life, this isn't for you. Also, this is a great place for a romantic date. Pros: Food, Wine, Atmosphere more

Not for everyone 2/19/2004

You love wine, intense Italian cuisine and taking a back seat in decision making - this is for you. The flavors are unique and familiar which means - go with it. There is an attitude, but a respectible one. You respect food and wine then leave it to the prefessionals, its thats good. Pros: food, WINE, scene more

No sour grapes, no room for attitude 1/16/2003

The place is like being invited into an Italian's home. Warm, welcoming, wonderful, but check your sense of entitlement and Upper East Side attitude at the door or don't bother, as you would not fit in or enjoy this little gem... Pros: Personal, Intimate, Warm more

It's worth it 12/6/2002

I have been to Il Posto several times since they opened. Each time I am reminded why it's a haven in this city. Their small menu is full of simple, well prepared Italian plates; from very fresh pastas to cured meats and salads. The wine list is comprehensive, clearly well chosen, and the servers are helpful without being snooty. Yes, there are some rules in place in regards to numbers of people in parties but the intent is to maintain the sane atmosphere. They succeed. If you are headed out with a large party and looking for a raucus night, Il Posto simply isn't for you. No hard feelings, I just wish people could appreciate why the rules exist. They actually wind up enhancing eveyone's experience. Pros: Food, Atmosphere, Wine List Cons: Not good for Groups more

What a Mean Owner! 12/5/2002

Are you kidding me with this place?!?! Someone should mention the fact that they don't allow parties greater than six. Six of us arrived and we having a lovely time UNTIL two more friends arrived. The owner came over right away and instisted that we leave IMMEDIATELY. Nevermind that we had a half bottle of wine left and one more friend on the way. We chugged our wine and left two friends behind to wait for the one that hadn't shown up. He FORCED the remaining two to leave as well because they were part of our party. Fine, you have your rules, but c'mon... get a grip! Pros: romantic Cons: no more than 6/party, nasty owner more

Prison dining rooms have less rules 12/4/2002

It was amazing how much more relaxed we all were once we left Il Posto. We were holding our breath the whole time that we might make some faux pas and disappoint the owner. We were paying this man to be treated like boorish slobs. I was looking for a quiet and unpretentious place to catch up with some old friends. Quiet it was, unpretentious it was not. The owner told us to leave for not following his rules, still made us pay for our drinks and then gave us the stink eye as we finished them. Pros: decor, quiet Cons: pretentious, oppresively pleasant more

Now this is a wine bar! 9/4/2002

You enter into this beautiful haven and come into some far off, romantic Italian world.... Tree branches coming out of brick walls, soft candlelight, communal tables - and you'll swear you're not in Manhattan.... I found the service nice, not rude, like some have said -- they just give you your space. Order the meat and cheese plate and a bottle of wine and sit back and relax with a good friend or perhaps some new ones.... I've never found a better wine bar in the city. Pros: ambience, great wine, yummy food more
