Best

great sushi.. I love the shrimp tempora roll. I would recomend this place .. I dont think there is a lunch special which is what I would like to see here.

Worst

Yes, the pieces are large (too large and not expertly sliced, in my opinion), but also pricey. The Prices and long waits are just not acceptible - especially when there are many ...

haru is going downhill rapidly 5/1/2012

I used to like Haru but find their attitude and prices to be a real turnoff. Not friendly or helpful on the phone, pricing just keep going up and quality and value do not follow. Lots of better options for good sushi with much friendlier service! more

Just ok 5/21/2010

Went here on a warm Saturday night and sat outside. Haru gets a bad rap but for the price it does the job. We started with edamame and split a couple of rolls. The presentation on the grouping of rolls was nice. The tempura flakes were hidden on the crunchy spicy tuna roll. Nothing seemed overly exciting from a food or scene standpoint. The location in Union Square is definitely more fun. The The Sake Bar across the street has a better scene. It just seems like they don't try very hard here. For good sushi, I hit up Atlantic Grill around the corner. Pros: Outdoor seating Cons: food just ok more

The Kiss of Fire roll is great! 3/28/2010

I love the kiss of fire roll but they don't know how to serve eel properly. I told them over and over that I wanted it hot and they insisted on sending it out luke warm. I ended up just telling them to throw it out. Sake list was decent. Just don't get the eel! Pros: Great quality Cons: Dont eat the Eel more

Disappointment to fish around the world. 3/26/2009

My goal is to eat at every sushi place in the city. I've gone to about 25 places thus far. This isn't the wost place i've been too, but it's pretty bad. Way overpriced and just not fresh tasting. I just tossed the rest in the garbage. This is a big deal, I love sushi and have never thrown it out, in fact one time at a nice restaurant a couple finished their meal and left two pieces of a special roll and before the waitress could take it away, I snatched it off their plate. That's how much I love sushi. This place sucked. Pros: quick delivery Cons: overpriced terrible fish more

Worst sushi ever 12/25/2008

I went to Haru with my husband on xmas day and had the worse sushi. It was not fresh and the rows were as hard as mah-jong. We were very disapointed and didn't think it was worth $80. Go somewhere else if you want real sushi. Pros: Ambience Cons: Sushi not fresh at all more

Love it 9/27/2006

I love this place. Went for the first time and our server was cool as beans but confused an order, sending out a tartar instead of a ceviche. It looked good so we decided to keep it anyway, but she realized her mistake, came over to apologize and take the dish away. We insisted it that we wanted it to keep it and would pay for it but she comped it from our bill and sent us a round of sake on top of everything. You can't take great customer service for granted these days! The food was freaking fantastic too. We're definitely going back soon. Pros: Service, food, location Cons: Nada more

pretty good sushi rolls, white folks love it 7/3/2006

not authentic sushi or the highest quality fish (yes, I think I'm qualified to state that) Pros: some items are quite tasty Cons: the raw fish is not top quality sushi, but edible more

Neighborhood favorite 5/12/2006

Been going to Haru ever since it opened and it's still my favorite Japanese place on the UES. Crowds have calmed down a little, which is GREAT for the locals who don't want to deal with the crappy, trendy places popping up everywhere. Leave this place to those of us who want great food without getting ripped off! Pros: food, relaxed scene more

Not worth it 12/3/2005

The sushi is OK but not worth the wait, seating arrangements and the pace of service. There are at least 3-4 better sushi places in the neighborhood. Pros: Sushi is fine Cons: Seating, Service more

Totally unexpected! 1/14/2005

When I visited my friend who lives in the Upper Eastside, she recommended that we go to this restaurant. At first I was slightly skeptical because it was a sushi restaurant in the middle of NYC. Boy was I wrong! The food was great and the service was even better. The best part of the experience was knowing that the manager (a bubbly, friendly young woman with a great smile) truly cared about how we were doing. I would definently recommend this restaurant. Pros: Great food, Good service, Cozy Cons: , Music a bit loud more

Good Sushi 12/2/2004

One of the more accessable sushi places in NY, Haru has consistently good quality sushi, great waitstaff (you never need to ask for water or for your waitress/waiter) in a fun young enviornment. The manager is very helpful and attentive and she makes sure that everything is fine with each table. Pros: Reasonably Priced, Good Sushi, Good Staff more

Over-rated Sushi with snotty attitude 12/10/2002

Yes, the pieces are large (too large and not expertly sliced, in my opinion), but also pricey. The Prices and long waits are just not acceptible - especially when there are many better places to go. Haru was great when it first opened - but not now. Pros: Fresh Fish, Large Pieces Cons: Pricey, Crowded, Noisy more

Sushi Chefs Eat While Working 11/4/2002

My two friends and I ate at the sushi bar on Saturday night and notices that on several occasions one of the chefs would be eating with his bare hands as he worked and then touching the food to be served to customers. Overall, it made for a pretty gross dining experience. more

long waits and not so great 10/18/2002

Always a wait and only so, so food and service. Fun to dine outside, but not fabulous choices for food. Received the wrong dish -- I'm a vegeatarian and my dish came with chicken. more

Only the ice water was edible. 8/22/2002

The worst excuse for Japanese food I've ever encountered. The soup for the udon was soy sauce and water. The sushi was awful! The rice was poor quality and was cooked so badly it was hard. Furthermore, the rice had no seasoning, so the sushi was bland and disgusting. The fish was adequate, but inexpertly sliced. It is obvious that no one in the restaurant has any idea about or experience with Japanese cuisine. Cons: food more
