Amazing Mac n Cheese 11/11/2010

We stopped by Fred's a few weeks ago and I have now fallen head over heals for their Mac n Cheese it was amazing with bread crumbs and the perfect amount of cheese. The staff was amazing they couldn't have been kinder to us. That weekend we went for the brunch and it was just as good. Thank god they have a big dining room other wise the line would be around the block. I am now 100% a Fred's loyalest and am bring them pictures of my dog and my boyfriend's dogs as well. more

The perfect spot for anything 11/5/2010

Between the Mac n Cheese and the Burgers you can't beet this spot. For years this has been one of my date spots and now me and my girlfriend love going here for brunch or dinner. We always love being able to sit down and just relax with some amazing food. We are regulars there and will continue to be more

Warm neighborhood spot 9/29/2010

Had dinner at Fred's tonight. I've walked by many times and never eaten there. The service was very friendly and prompt. Our food was delicious. We had the brownie with espresso ice cream for dessert and it was very decadent. The waitress came by the table just enough times to pay attention to our needs, but also gave us our space. The water glasses were constantly filled. In addition, we came in with a coupon, which the staff collected at the start of the meal, and explained up front that it would not count towards any drinks and we'd need to pay cash only in order to use the coupon -- so there were no surprises at the end when the check came, and the coupon was correctly discounted in the bill. more

Overrated 7/17/2010

The food is average, nothing that I would ever need to go back for. We were with a vegetarian ( don't know why) and she ordered an omelet with no sausage. When it came a busser had brought it and it had sausage so she sent it back. The waitress then returned and showed us that she wrote it down w/o sausage and threw the kitchen under the bus for messing up the order. Thats teamwork! I guess the decoration of all the dogs is cool, but thats it. Go to one of the million other bruch places in the area. Pros: The bus boy fills up your water a lot Cons: Waitress, food more

horrible 4/30/2010

Went for Sunday Brunch, was seated promptly and our order was taken. .....15min...25 min..40 min.. pass and no food or sign of our waitress; yet at least 3 other tables who sat down after were eating. Finally after complaining to the manager did our food arrive. Waitress was unapologetic, actually didn't even care. The manager was ok, apologized but not very sincerely.\r Oh, and the food was not worth the wait. Never going back to be ignored and unsatisfied. Pros: nothing Cons: everything more

Great Brunch Spot, Cozy Restaurant 3/5/2010

What comes to mind when you hear the name Fred? A dog. Naturally. (Didn't the little Obama girls want to name their pup that before the First Lady vetoed?) With plentiful pictures of the owners' blag lab, the woodsy decor of the Upper West Side restaurant is perfect -- a perfect weekend closer, that is. The free basket of fresh blueberry or chocolate chip muffins and strawberry butter is a great start to the brunch salads, omelets and entrees to come at this laid-back rest spot. I haven't been during the week, but it can't veer too far from the cute gimmicks like the weekend staples. Pros: Strawberry Butter, Fresh Muffins to Start Cons: Crowded sometimes, Weird decor if you don't like dogs more

friendly neighborhood dining 6/13/2009

I come here all the time and have quite a few favorites. I like to eat relatively healthy, but not deprive myself of yummy eats. I switch between the veggie burger, the pear salad and the mahi mahi. The Mahi Mahi is my favorite though. Oh and my husband is obsessed with the mac and cheese so i always steal a bite (or two or three) of his. The decor is darling with pictures of dogs covering every wall. I will say though, I am always a little surprised when the bill comes. I am of course used to NYC dinner prices, but everything is just $2 or $3 more than I think they should be. Pros: friendly managers, food Cons: a little pricier than I'd like more

terrible place to eat 4/28/2009

the food was horrible. came out cold, came out old and late\r \r the waitress was soooooooooo not attentive at all. we didnt get a bread basket so we asked for it after waiting for 20 min. we didnt get drinks and we didnt get the appetiz. we ordered. \r on top of that we got the vegetarian food and along came the cold french fries with bacon in it. this is an ok mistake only we said we were veggie people and the bacon bits are not noticable till you actually eat it. the veggie burger is also cooked in the bacon grease. NOT COOL Pros: good location-friendly hostess Cons: everything more

the worst experience I have ever met 3/19/2009

I live on the upper west side and so I stumbled upon this ""cute"" bar on the corner of my neighborhood called fred's. I was with a friend, and right when we get there, the bartendar singled us out and refused to serve us because he did not recognize a non-US ID. (its called a green card btw) However, he did not try to ID any one else at the bar and then proceeded to yell across the bar / restaurant saying that we should go to any other bar. \r \r I grew up in nyc and so obviously have been to several places but i have never experienced that type of rudeness experience in my entire life and i would never step foot in there ever again unless you want to be kicked out because you dont look ""american:""\r \r Cons: The rudest bartendar that I ever met \r Cons: the worst experience I have ever met more

Great mac & cheese in a large portion, good service and lots of cute pet pictures! I went with a group of 8 and had no problems getting a table on a Sunday evening. more

The Mac n Cheese is calling me!!!! 8/20/2008

Besides this place being adorable, and cozy, it has my favorite food- Mac n Cheese...and it's the best I've ever had... I love it and everyone else I know who's had it, loves it as well. They also have some of my favorite beers on Tap, so that's always something that goes well with my food ...\r LOVE IT!!! Pros: Best Mac n Cheese more

Best Burgers! 5/27/2008

I had all intentions of stopping in after reading a job post online I was interested in. I came by once and the owner wasn't there but was definitely happy with the beers on tap and the snacks at the bar (Stella and goldfish)! I came back another night because I wanted to try their food and they had outdoor seating (big bonus!). The first time I stopped by it was pretty dead but I went back on a Thurs. night and it was packed--and now I know why. Their food is awesome! So far the best burger I have had in NYC and I've been here for about 6 months now. Although we weren't able to sit outside, we were led to the back room which was pretty quiet but perfect for catching up with my friend. The waitstaff was friendly, the host was incredibly nice (not to mention apologetic for not being able to seat us outside) and our overall experience was great. Although they haven't hired me (yet!) they have definitely earned themselves a new patron--and quite possibly a regular. Pros: good food Cons: outdoor seating not always available more

FRED'S is Terrific! 3/6/2008

What a wonderful spot! My husband and I came into Fred's after years of walking right past it. On this particular day we decided to finally check it out. We were greeted warmly by one of the owners, Kimberly, who was particularly gracious. What a dinner! We started with the crispy calamari and it was wonderful; very light with a spicy red sauce. I had a wonderful piece of Mahi Mahi and my husband had a crock full of Chili with melted Cheese on top with tortilla chips and a side salad that was simply scrumptious. Our waitress was a beautiful and friendly young woman (Megan?). From the second we walked into the door until the moment we left, we felt at home in this cozy, vibrant environment. I'm so glad we finally made the trip inside! Fred's will surely become one of our regular spots in the neighborhood. Thank you Fred's! more

Terrific 7/1/2007

While FRED'S can get crowded on the weekends (especially during brunch) this is a stand-by for UWS residents. They have excellent food and a genuine staff that is fun and competent. Unlike other stuffy ""high end"" places, FRED'S does comfort food like nobody else. They are dog friendly outside in the warmer months too. Pros: Staff, Hosts, Family friendly Cons: crowded, sometime noisy more

Hands Down Best Spot in Neighborhood 2/25/2007

What a great spot! We just moved to the neighborhood and stumbled upon FRED'S...we LOVE this place. My husband and I sat at the bar and ordered burgers and a side of Mac-n-Cheese and it was simply delicious! The bartender was great he bought us a round because it was our first time there...we felt like we were at ""Cheers!"" Can't wait to go back and try their brunch! Pros: Great homey feel, staff, food more

Trust me, the mac & cheese is dreadful. 2/3/2007

I've ordered once before, meatloaf, and I give it a B. But today's order experience, well... Without any doubt this is the worst mac & cheese I've ever had in my life. Very little flavor of cheese, very strong flavor of wine. Yes, wine - like you might put in a nice sauce for chicken. Who puts wine in cheese sauce for a classic comfort food? Salad was a limp cupful of field greens that were the rage in the 1980's. I ordered sauteed veges and received crunchy sort-of-steamed veges. To top it off, since I had to order a minimum $20 for delivery with credit card, and my order thus far was only $19.80, I asked the order taker what the best dessert was. Short pause, ""carrot cake"" he says, so I order one. Clearly this is a carrot cake from the freezer section of the quantity foods catalog the head cook uses. Sad experience for my supper this evening. I'm now eating some cottage cheese and an apple since that entire $28 meal (including a tip for the quite friendly delivery person), is now in my trash pail. Pros: fast delivery Cons: food is so overpriced it makes it that much more disappointing more
