Not Just An Amazing Haircut 1/11/2010

Well, I have been a loyal client of Fred's for over 20 years now. Times have changed, styles have changed, NYC has changed but Fred continues to be Professional, reliable, creative and always interesting. I have been traveling from Boston, MA for many, many years to still get my haircut from Fred which says a lot about both him and myself. I highly recommend Fred for his creativity and skillful cuts as well as his positive energy and careful attention to detail. Wouldn't go anywhere else. 1/10/2010

Well you always hear these stories about how people always tell their barber everything. these sorts of stories from the older style barber shops that have those very comfortable and friendly atmospheres. Though with Fred they aren't stories, because every time I go for a haircut I always have a wonderful and interesting discussion (or discussions) with him. My parents went to him for haircuts, and now I go to him for haircuts (actually I've gone since before I can remember, and I'm 20 already). Like another reviewer, I live a bit of a ways away (Brooklyn), but the haircut and talks we have are worth it. Also... his haircuts feel like head massages... which is nice in my opinion. Sculpts Your Hair to Fit Your Face 1/5/2010

I have known Fred for over twenty years and have always had great cuts from him. It is usual to have colleagues and friends volunteer comments on how good the cut looks. Fred not only takes seminars on new styling and cutting techniques, but he also teaches at some of them. So, he is constantly thinking about techniques and looks that will make a client look his best. He cuts my hair so it falls naturally into its form; as a consequence, I'm left with a look that is easy to replicate and easy to take care of. Fred is very caring and professional and really takes the time and effort to give you a cte good looking cut that is good for your hair and face. I recommend him so often that I am afraid he'll get too busy. Just kidding. Thanks Fred Pros: Takes time and really gives you a cut best for you. Cons: None. A thoughtful and creative hairstylist 11/11/2009

...with a great sense of humor to boot! Fred is simply fantastic. Before I discovered his place, I was wasting money at various ""high end"" salons where I felt rushed and was often given a bland and sometimes unsubstantial and unmanagable cut. I have very thick hair and a small face and Fred always takes the time to not only discuss my needs but also meticulously shape my hair style to frame my face beautifully. I get stopped on the street all the time, no joke. I'm a performer on both stage and camera so my image is very important and feel so relieved to know I have Fred to depend on as my stylist! Best haircut in my life 10/8/2009

This will sound over the top, but truly, Fred gave me the best haircut I have ever had in my life. For most women, that means two things: 1)my hair looks good or great with very little effort (never happened before), and 2) people stop me and ask me who cut my hair. Seriously, they do. One reason the haircut is so great is because he spent an hour or so considering the shape of my head, my face, my profile, all those elements that are often ignored. This resulted in the most dynamite cut that has grown out beautifully. You will not be displeased if you give your coif over to Fred. more

In a city of very expensive, often only mediocre haircuts, I am so thrilled to have found Fred! Fred really takes the time to listen to what kind of look you're after or, if you're unsure about what exactly you want, he always has thoughts about new cuts to try that would suit your hair's texture and your features, along with your personality and lifestyle. And when it comes to the actual cutting, he is such a pro with the scissors! My hair always has great movement after a visit to Fred, and as someone who tends to wash and go in the morning, my cuts really hold up well on their own, even on days when I forgo the hairdryer. I would highly recommend Fred to anyone looking for a great haircut! more

Fred gives serious consideration your concerns. Then he constructs a fabulous haircut by taking into account qualities of your hair and your features. Giving you a look that is eye catching, easy to re-create, and probably versatile too! That's what he did for me. (And I have super fine, baby soft hair!) Tired of haircuts that don't make you feel like a model? 9/19/2009

Imagine getting your hair cut by someone who not only cuts, but CREATES the very styles you are lusting after in all the ""hairstyle catalogs?"" That's right, when you see pictures of the hottest new hairstyles in magazines, 90% of them were created by Fred. Plus, your transformation occurs in his home in a very ""no rush"" manner. As a result, the price is less then in the so-called ""top salons."" Every time Fred cuts my hair, I get attention and action for months. Those who know, know that the hair is WAY more important then the shoes. LOL Pros: Emerging from the chair looking like one of the hair models. Cons: None. more

Fred is a NYC gem 8/28/2009

I followed my instinct to track down the haircutter from the flyer, checked the website briefly and took a chance. Fred was so helpful and a great listener, he understood my considerations and concerns and got to work without any fuss or ego trips. The quiet, one-on-one setting really is good for focussing on the important aspects of hairstyling. No loud music, no blaring noises of other hairdryers. Just Fred, helping to accommodate my wishes. After a detailed haircut I look much better, styled as I wanted my hair to look. With Fred's technical skills as well as his expert input, I'm quite happy to have found him. Feel like a million bucks 8/16/2009

Three years ago I was looking for a Manhattan stylist who would take the time to listen to what I wanted, and to give me the best cut every time. Fred has never let me down. He's full of ideas and suggestions, but also listens to my vision for my hair. If you want personal attention and an expert cut, you'll find it in Fred. I always I am happy to get my haircut here because I am taken care of everytime. Fred has a keen eye for what looks good and what is up-to-date. He is very good at cutting curly hair. Men and women both compliment my hair regularly, which I attribute to his skills. He also has a pleasant, professional personality that not all hairstylists have. Pros: Best haircut ever! I have been going to Fred Stepkin for my changing hairstyles for years. Ever since he had been working at Jean Louis David back in 1982. He has created countless styles on my head, from conservative to funky. I love going to him because it's always a hairstyle adventure. It's fun to change my look and he is always there to help in creating something with an edge that I love and always get so many compliments after I go to see him! Best Hairsylist in the World 8/3/2009

I have been getting my hair styled by Fred since the mid 80's. Back then he was with Jean Louis David hair salon at Bendels. I have never been more happy with my haircuts than I have with Fred. (and you know how dissapointing a bad cut can be). Fred has always taken the time to consult with me on exactly what I want. You can really see how much he takes pride in styling hair. I've referred so many of my friends and family to him. Everyone loves getting their hair styled by Fred. I know this sounds like I'm paying tribute here, but I've known this guy for over 20 years and he deserves the praise. Pros: Always is current on the latest styles. Cons: I have nothing negative to say more
