Bad first experience. No way I will join 6/12/2010

My fiancé goes there so I went to try it out. They first made me sign a waiver and held on to my passport. They left me there without even give me a tour... I did my work out. !the equipment is ok but not worth what they charge. Then, I go downstairs to talk to the guy (apparently the manager) about joining or not. My passport was on the table in the middle of the room and had been sitting there the whole time!!! I don't know if they even realize what identity theft is but anyone could have just stolen it. Then I tell the guy about my situation (either I join or my fiancé quits to join another gym with me) hoping he knew as little as marketing 101 and how important it is to attract new clients and even more to keep existing ones. I felt like I was annoying him. He didn't even want me to join. He even cut me while I was speaking to get the phone... I told him I was going to check other gyms but I wanted to know about their promotions (get the clue, I want you to make me want to join your gym). He basically said that I had to sign up for everything for 100$ a month, no other offer and there was no promotion (understand "take it or leave it, I don't care"). I just took my passport and decided with my fiancé to join a cheaper and nicer gym on W14th street at the end of the month. Too bad for them, they lost a prospective customer and an existing one. Pros: Good locations Cons: Rude people more

spend less on advertising and decor and more on the actual equipment 8/28/2008

I have trouble believing that these other reviews are written by non-biased reviewers. Much of the cardio equipment is not even second rate. Techtrix equipment is poor quality. Instead of wasting money on "hip" wall murals, invest in some LifeFitness cardio equipment. Any decent club will at least have Lifefitness cardio equipment, or maybe the more expensive Cybex cardio equipment. To make matters worse, much of this third-rate equipment is often broken. Downstairs, the strength equipment looks like it was literally bought in 1985. The floor is cluttered with old equipment. For example, there are at least three seated squat machines, all of them old and very poorly designed. They seem to be designed to destroy your knees. They could address this problem by buying a newer Cybex seat squat machine. This problem is not limited to the cases I write about in this review - it is a widespread problem at this club. Crunch is notorious for their lack of substance. It's all advertising and paint. Pros: If you like purple walls and annoying advertising slogans, this is the place for you Cons: poor equipment, prepare to be inundated with junkmail more

OVERRATED, OVERPRICED! 6/12/2008

I was totally ripped off at this club. Facilities are ok, but you can find the same quality anywhere in the city for less. Staff was obnoxious, and not only do they overcharge for membership, but then have the nerve to charge for many "extras" that should be included once inside the club. Not to mention the tons of advertising they clutered my mailbox with trying to sell me more services and products. To top it off, I canceled my membership and they kept billing my credit card anyway! Glad I left when I did. more

Blasting music does not make for a good workout 12/11/2007

I visited the new Crunch health club on fourth ave and twelth street and found it to have a comprehensive assortment of new gym equipment. That is the positive. Unfortunately the music was blasting to the point of being overwhelming, on every floor of this facility including the men's bathroom. Although I attempted to speak with the floor personnel about this issue they ignored my request and the inundatingly loud music continued to blast away. This issue is a significant one because when one wishes to work out the music in the background should be modulated so that it is not jolting! more

This iconic club on Lafayette St. seemed a little a little overwhelming at first, but the staff is super-friendly and the vibe is really cool. It's fun to be a part of such a New York instituition. Having so many options spread out before you is exhilarating, but if you're not sure where to begin, the memberships come with a free training session to show you around and get you started on the right foot. There are like, a million, fun classes too. I'm still amazed that you can get all this for the same price as the YMCA! Pros: convenient location, excellent juice bar more

SoHomey 6/27/2005

A lot of gyms are one big industrial space loaded with machinery and harsh lighting, but Crunch has so much personality! Crunch SoHo is my favorite. Each of the four floors has a different purpose: Cardio, Weights, Studios, Boxing/More Cardio. You could take the little elevator in between them, or keep your heart rate up by taking the stairs. It's cute and comfortable, and since the equipment is separated by floor, it's easy to find what you're looking for. Plus you don't feel like you're on display! Pros: not crowded, convenient location, fun! more

Nowhere Better! 3/12/2005

Crunch is the coolest, most fun place in the world. I'd go there just to hang out, but I get to get in shape too! Great Music, Atmosphere, Funky classes, Fun times, Cycle X-Box! It's even affordable given the spectrum of choices in the city. There's nowhere better. Pros: Affordable, Not Crowded, FUN!!! more

great staff 7/8/2004

I go to Crunch Archive and I love the atmosphere. The staff is enormously friendly and the trainers are great. The facility is always clean. Its a little pricier than some other health clubs, but well worth it. Pros: friendly staff, clean environment more

great gym 2/10/2004

I've been coming here for 5 years!! This is by far the coolest gym in the city for its price range. The classes are cool, the staff is efficient, and the lockers are CLEAN. more
