This a great bar where I went to a few times. Its a very cleaned and organized place. Its a very quiet environment but I enjoy it. The drinks are amazing and the price is reasonable. more

Love this place 3/5/2008

I live in this neighborhood and love this bar. From the outside you wouldn't think much of but once you walk in you really understand this place. The place is surprisingly clean and original. There are murals on all walls, nice crown-molding and dark wood bars and seating. The crowd is typical East Village (which is partly why I like this place) and most people are there just to chill and have a few beers and good conversation. The bartenders (sometimes 'Monks' sometimes not) will shush the crowd if it gets too rowdy. It is a small place, so don't go with a large group. Also note, they only serve beer and wine. I would come back here any night of the week. Pros: Original Decor, Friendly People and Staff Cons: Drinks are slightly more expensive, small place more

Great beer selection 10/27/2007

Not your average Blue Moon and Hoegaarden place, nice selection of Belgium beers. Also very tasty fruit beers, I drink them as a desert. They do not have food but they allow you to order from menus they have from other places, I went at night so it may be different during the day. If you like trying different beer this place is for you. Pros: Not crowded. Outside seeting area available Cons: Small, tight seating more

Prepare for a shushing! 9/17/2006

This bar is head and shoulders above all others in the area. Hands down, my favorite place to go for a few drinks when I'm looking for a low-key, conversation-minded drink. Place is cosy, beers are amazing and not overpriced, and if the crowd gets too rowdy, the ""monks"" actually do some lighthearted shushing! Pros: Variety of beers, intimate setting Cons: no food served, crowded on weekends more

The best Belgium has to offer 4/9/2006

This is a great bar to try fantastic beers from Belgium and other countries. Food service by ordering in is allowed from local restaurants. The ""monks"" who pull taps are cool and knowledgeble about their subject matter. An excellent place for serious ale lovers.... wimpy palates need not apply. Pros: beer selection, friendly staff, fair prices more

unlike anything else in NY 2/12/2006

Where else can you get delicious, gourmet beer of every color and flavor inside a bar with signs posted demanding ""no talking by order of the brewist monks""? If you brew beer, love beer, want to find a place to talk about beer, or basically have positive feelings about beer in any capacity, Burp Castle is the place. They host a homebrewer's guild once a month, which is in itself a serious recommendation: serious street cred. Good beer, good crowd, good service, dim lights, quiet atmosphere good for quiet get togethers of all types. Highly Recommended Pros: good service, good beer, good ambiance more

Rare brews, cozy contemplative space 2/3/2006

It's a monk bar. You go, you get an amazing beer and listen to people. I've heard/had some of the most interesting conversations in recent memory at Burp Castle. The crowd is always friendly as is the staff. Intriguing beers, great monk murals, and a warm environment, coupled with a knowledgable awesome staff, make this bar a must. Cheers! Pros: pints of Delirium, chant on the radio, Always great more

Unique, like their beers 2/2/2006

Burp Castle seems to have new ownership-- the monks are now cute (and cool) WOMEN (who sometimes wear the robes, but always act like angels) The new staff is friendly and fun to talk to -- but the best things about the place haven't changed--the chants, the beer, and the low-key ambiance. This is a great bar to go to if you want to talk to your date or friends. The beer selection can't be outmatched. Kwak, Triple Karmeliet, Coresndonk, I've even seen St.Bernardus on tap. The bottle list is outrageous, and the taps are off the hook. AND NOW THERE ARE HAPPY HOUR SPECIALS. Everything is a dollar off. Monday and Wednesday they have free belgian frites too. It's changed, but only for the better. Pros: BELGIAN BEER, GERMAN BEER, NOT LOUD more

Not your run of the mill bar 1/25/2005

Burp Castle is not your run of the mill bar. It's strictly beer and it's not your average beers. If you want to try something new and different, try here. Pros: atmosphere, quiet, selection Cons: , expensive more
