excellent place for a drink 6/13/2009

Interesting to see that the reviews describing how bad the bartender was were submitted at the same time. Anyways, I've been to this place several times and have had nothing but good experiences. Friendly customers, friendly bartenders, good selection of beers on tap...I just wish the kitchen was still open! more

if you can call him a bartender... 4/23/2009

I read all the reviews on this place and recently met up with some friends there. The music was cool, along with the female dj who was rocking out the tunes. The bartender/mangager was so annoyed by me asking him for drinks that I almost started questioning myself, "am i doing something wrong to tick this guy off"?! uuuuuh.... the answer is no way I wasn't, he's the bartender and it's his friggin job to serve drinks to the patrons!! Geeeeeeezzzz... this guy kept that stick up his butt the whole night too. Almost making it intimidating to approach the bar and buy more drinks. yeah real tough guy...Im a female dude have some f-ing courtesy if someones being polite aaaaaannnnd tipping you!!! Pros: the girl dj on Friday Cons: the bartender is one rude S.O.B! more

Worst Bartender/Manager Ever--RUDE! 4/16/2009

I was here last night with a group of friends. We were at the bar just a few minutes and ordered a round of shots. First of all, the bar was not extremely busy, and the bartender was sitting at the opposite end of the bar from us. When I tried to get his attention, he tried his hardest to ignore me--not sure why. When he finally took my order, he acted like he was doing me a favor by getting our drinks. I am sorry, but what kind of customer service is that? You should not be a bartender if you cannot be bothered with your patrons. You are in the wrong business!! Then, when I asked to speak to the manager, it so happens that the bartender is the manager. Then he proceeds to kick us out for no reason--I still don't know why. All I know is that this bar will not survive if this man is allowed to be the bartender/manager. He will def. ruin it. Pros: decently priced drinks Cons: rude bartender more

Horrible Service and RUDE bartender 4/16/2009

I have to agree with the past reviews--the bartender was so RUDE! I will never go back to this place because of him and will be sure to spread the word about the horrible service at this place. The guy thinks he is bartender version of th soup Nazi--it's ridiculous. Cons: RUDENESS more

know it all rude..bartender/owner 4/16/2009

the bartender who happens to be a part owner...prob 1 percent, is a know it all jerk..rude to everyone...cursed at people last nite 3 times...all for nothing...poured 7 shots for us...the 7th shot had 1/4 the alchohal of the others...so when we asked why he poured one of the others into it...then cursed us...when we left quickly the bouncer and bar back apologized to us saying what u rude/bad service/jerk this guy always is....and how sorry they were....i hope his partners read this Pros: should be cool local place Cons: owner/bartender with picaso hat more

Worst bartender ever... 1/12/2009

Met a group at this small intimate bar. Had been once or twice before. Walked in stone cold sober as I have a condition that doesnt allow me to drink. Was near the bar where a chubby, sweating, growing up gotti bartender was screaming at a girl for some reason. When I say screaming, I mean screaming and using profanities. He complained that he was sick of serving F****** 21 year olds. He turned to me and asked me how old I was. I told him I was 24 I think. (I sometimes forget now that no birthday is a legal milestone) He told me to F*** off and get out of his bar. (He is not the owner) I was really surprised but seeing as how it was a friends birthday I didnt want to ruin the night for her. I left without issue. I am a business owner myself and feel bad for the owner of this bar. He has employees representing him that I wouldnt let represent a mass murderer in court. Hope your experience with the place is better. Anthony Marchigiano Pros: Bar itself is fine Cons: Bartender should be fired immediately more

Jam Packed and a Tad Dingy 3/10/2007

There is very little seating and the standing room is minimal. Expect to have to push to get to the bar. more

Average 3/4/2007

Came here on a Wednesday Night. It' s not a very big place, a handful of seats at the bar and some tables and chairs all of which were occupied. The lighting is very dark and there are no televisions. Beer selection was limited and prices were a little expensive for the neighborhood ($5 for a bottle of Bud Light). Drinks are $2 off during happy hour. It seemed okay although nothing about it was special nor would make one want to return. more

It doesn't make a difference if your black & white 2/28/2007

lame title.. I went here with some friends recently and enjoyed it. It's a casual place with east village kids constituting most of the patrons. The drinks were average priced, and it wasn't overly crowded since we could sit at the bar. There weren't any tables open since they were either taken or reserved at 9pm, but it was all good. I recommend this place; it's chill and cheap! Pros: Cheap drinks, not too crowded, chill vibe Cons: maybe too small for a big crowd? more

The Hampton Jitney 2/9/2007

Possibly the worst bar in the neighborhood. If you like pretentious Wall St Yuppies and UWS groupies making there first ventures "downtown" then this is the bar for you. more

Semi-pro New School Intellectuals Made My Night at the Black and White 12/13/2006

Spent an evening here with some students from the New School for Social Research (which is just a few blocks away.) Together we enjoyed the inexpensive drinks, comfortable atmosphere and fine musical selections while we drank, laughed, and ultimately lost faith in mankind together. I would go back again, but life is a materialistic bourgois deception deflated by our post-modern condition. The martinis are good but the bathroom could use more sani-wipes in the dispenser. Oh what's the point anyway? Pros: Arendt, Derida, Rousseau Cons: Heidegger, Camus, Kafka more

Good Bar 5/6/2006

Fun place, but nothing special. I'll go back if I'm in the neighborhood. Pros: Friendly atmosphere, Good drinks more

address is wrong 1/6/2006

The bar is on E10th Street! we popped in for a quick drink, seems like a good place to start or end an evening more

Rock on! 4/18/2005

Great spot if you enjoy a drink and great indi rock. Always friendly and great music make this small spot a must for an average night that turns into a great one. Stay late and enjoy.. more

Shall we Shag Now or Shag Later? 3/25/2004

Great place to take your lady friend for an intimate snog session. Low lights, low-key decor, and an unintrusive and polite staff definitely go a long ways to building up your mojo but the Lean Cuisine menu list will force you to stick to the drink specials however. more

Unpretentious AND Hip (is it possible?) 10/29/2002

This is one of my favorite bars! I have been going here for 3 years. Great place for dinner with a date, drinks with friends or even to sit at the bar. The staff is always friendly and move at a un-New York pace. Decor is cozy too! Pros: Atmosphere, Value, Waitstaff Cons: Crowded on Weekends more

Relaxing Start to the Weekend 8/23/2002

I made this my first stop after work on Friday, around 6:30 p.m. It was calm, at that time, but inviting. I sat at the bar, which was romatically strewn with votive candles. A couple chatted quietly at a nearby table. The bartender was friendly and suggested considering drinks from the special drinks menu. I ordered a Rosewater, a fruity drink made up from Absolut, which tasted light although it had a kick! Soft jazz music was playing in the backround. I definitely destressed after a hectic day at work, and would love to go back! Pros: Romantic more

  • Attracting a steady flow of well-heeled patrons, this neighborhood favorite fills up quickly on weekends and smartly accommodates table folk with banquettes in Hershey-bar-proportioned alcoves. Surprisingly well-matched red and orange vertical stripes impart a warm sophistication, enhanced by old-fashioned sconces on the walls and art-deco lighting fixtures behind the bar. Cocktails are excellent and ample; a perfect accompaniment to the uncommonly cute crowd of professional, creative and fashion types that can usually be found here on any given night.
