STAY AWAY 3/14/2011

STAY AWAY!!! Totally despicable service. If you want beer to be poured over your head by you server or if you enjoy being spit on, this is the place for you. Because my female! server was threatening me with physical violence, I had to call 911 to be escorted out of the bar. When police arrived, she denied non of it but claimed that it was all an accident. While she was screaming like a banshee, no manager or other staff members showed up to calm her. It must be the culture of the joint. Worst service experience of my life. more

Very mellow jazz/blues bar scene 1/1/2011

My wife and I went there on a Tuesday night after a show on Broadway. We had none of the problems others have mentioned with wait staff. We were charged correctly for 4 drinks each at $10 per drink. Gratuity was added, and was appropriate. You can tip musicians as you wish or not. Music was very good. Dancing was fun. Regulars even danced with a waitress. The later it got (after 1 AM), the younger the crowd got. Good times. more

What a shame 12/7/2010

I first came here in 1999, on my first visit to the city. I really loved its slightly run-down charm and talented musicians, and vowed to return every time I came to New York. And I did, almost every year since then. Having finally moved to the city last year and not visited for a few months, I decided to take a friend from out of town to Arthur's on Friday night. She loves jazz, and I thought she'd enjoy the laidback, scruffy vibe - even if I'd noticed the drinks getting pricier and pricier in recent years. After our experience last weekend, I've finally realized my dedication to Arthur's is hopelessly outdated. Our waitress refused to let us sit down in empty seats, saying she was saving them in case a bigger group arrived, then picked a fight when - after ten minutes of them remaining empty - we finally rested our legs. She wouldn't take our drink orders, and told us we'd be kicked out if we didn't finish up and leave. Overpriced drinks ($7 for a Bud Light - really?), terrible service, and R'n'B - NOT jazz - played between sets. You'd get better atmosphere in an airport bar, frankly. I won't be going back. more

Nice place to sit back and cool out 12/7/2010

I have never had a problem at Arthur's, albeit I do go during the week when tourists(domestic and foreign) have not invaded the place yet. There is a piano lounge setting 6-8?. I really can't blame the staff. I dont believe there is a door cover charge (try finding that in NEW YORK CITY!!!) . Some people want to have one or two drinks, talk BS (not really listening to the music), tie up a table or bar stool for hours and DON'T TIP. or run a decent money tab. They better not do that in front of Ms. Georgia, she will stop music and tell them to STFU more

too bad 12/4/2010

terrible place because of the waitresses. beware! more

RIPPED OFF 2/4/2010

great music bad waitresse 10/13/2009

Today was surreal!!!!!! The waitress actually gave me a dirty look walking without saying anything and was rude with us during all the evening. THE MUSIC IS GREAT AND THE ATMOSPHERE IS SENSATIONAL. Pros: good atmosphere and music Cons: staff more

watch your wallet 4/11/2009

I have been taking people from out of town here for years, touristy by fun. My last experience was that the staff is just looking for ways to make money. Our waitress charged $11 for a drink I always paid $9 for. In addition she short changed me on a $50 bill. The next one charged me a service charge of $9 on $33 worth of drinks, when there is no service charge. I guess they just like to determine their own tips, and they are quite generous. Try 55 Bar if you want music, I will never return!! Cons: dishonest staff more

....a Mirage.... 7/30/2008

This place caught my eye because it looked like a hole in the ground bohemian jazz club that I have been looking for and finally found. However, my fears were realized when I went into this place and was treated rudely and felt ripped-off when I walked out an hour later confused, deflated and broke. Allow me to begin: The Drinks are watered down and they charged us $15 for a screwdriver made with well Vodka. Also, do not be fooled by the lack of a cover charge. The rude waitress (short blond girl) charged us a $25 service fee. Since when does a bar charge a service fee? Was this the cover? The band however was fantastic. The sad thing was that the band had to perform for tips like circus monkeys. Shame. Screw the artists again-Shame on you Arthur's. In conclusion, stay away from this trap unless you prefer rude service and watered down overpriced drinks. If you are thirsty for a taste of ol school NYC Jazz then this place is a mirage. more

a real jem 3/27/2008

Old bar with a lot of charm. Great jazz, cool bartenders, fun crowd, amazing decor...it pretty much looks like Party City exploded all over it. more

great time up until the bill came 10/26/2007

The atmosphere was great if you like cramped, customers that sing along to the music and a decor that hasnt changed since the place opened. BUT watch out if your running a tab, almost positive they added 2extra beers on the tab, they did add an automatic tip, and like the other review below me there were only 2 of us, and $7 for a budlight crazy. And they dont takew credit card!!! I would go back, actually want to just to see if they try to rip me off, but there are other places in the city and that area just as good, if not better. Pros: atmosphere, music Cons: prices, cash only bar more

Beware! 8/9/2007

Beware of this scam artist haven! Me and my boyfriend actually had a wonderful time here, enjoying the funk/jazz band Off the Hook with blues diva Sweet Georgia Brown. But at the end of the night, after we had 3 drinks each, the cocktail waitress charged us for 4 each, AND charged $12 a drink instead of $10, as the menu clearly stated. To make matters even worse, there was a 20% service charge added to the bill, even though there was only two of us. We talked to the manager, who scoffed. This place is a scam! Beware! They will rip you off! Pros: Great music, a lot of fun until the bill comes... Cons: Watch your bill carefully, and count your drinks everytime. They will rip you off. more

Best fun 5/6/2007

I visited Arthur's Tavern in November 2006, just after Thanksgiving. I was pleasantly surprised. We arrived about 8 pm when it was quiet and not crowded. Then the band started setting up. By 9 pm, the place was packed with patrons and then in walked a uniquely dressed, well rounded woman in a hat and zebra outfit. She worked her way to the back and we realized that she was Sweet Georgia Brown. What a show person! She entertained us all evening, with song, a little crassy humor, and she made us laugh, loudly. If you are a bald guy who likes to laugh, loudly, be prepared for some friendly exchange with Georgia. Sit near the front of the tavern and she will still pick you out! It was a great time. I will visit every time I return to the Big Apple. Pros: The ambience Cons: It is crowded. Restrooms are in the basement. more

Gotta Go 3/21/2005

Arthur's Tavern has been around a long time. If you're visiting NYC and want to hit a club where you can hear good jazz and R&B, make sure Arthur's is on your short list. No cover. Reasonably priced drinks. Great service. Great music. A mostly white crowd, wide range in age. Loved it! Pros: Its Tradition, Great Music, No Cover Cons: Crowded more

Top Jazz Bar! 11/7/2004

Hi it was my 1st time to New York as I am from UK. Read about Arthur's bar and knew I had to try it. Was not disappointed at all! Fantastic music, great atmosphere and all the band members were great guys! The lead singer (whom I spoke to outside) had a great voice whic was not impaired by smoking! Or so he told me! The lead gutarist was awesome! He did a great rendition of Voodoo Chil'. When I go back to NY I am definitely going back to Arthur's bar! See you soon xx Pros: great music, good waitresses, cheap beer Cons: , n/a, n/a more

Ahmad 11/28/2003

Crowded, LOUD!, some good acts, Love Mr Parker, who is seemingly in deep slumber during the gig, but wakes up on cue and brings the house down. more

Cool Place 8/24/2003

Definitely worth the trip! We went to a couple other places rated by this site. I was not very impressed until I got here. This place was definitely cool. The house band was very entertaining. I was extremely impressed with Raul Midon. He is an incredibly talented musician. It was a very fun night. I would definitely go back. Pros: Good Music, Fun Crowd, Very Entertaining more

okay, I guess 5/20/2003

This place was all right, not too bad, not too good. I got served quickly, it got crowded, it's in a crazy area, lots of stuff going on. I just wasn't crazy abouot it...And their description of music was wrong. They said, "live blues, jazz...." and the band there was doing a cover of "Purple Rain." I understand that music can have blues or jazz roots, but come on.... more

Good Times 2/3/2003

Crowded, Smelly, Smokey (not for long) Dingy, Gritty, Blues, Jazz, Live music AND no cover! This is the bar other bars try so hard to be like. Mix crowd on a Sat night. On my left, large, black woman with gold caped teeth, on my right, waspy upper east sider native Manhattenite. How could you go wrong! Capt. & Coke $7 bucks. Small place, but since there is no cover people were coming in an out all night long, so you can easly grab a seat! Pros: NO COVER!, very old New York more

Snuggel 1/30/2003

This place was like the bar in coyote ugly. Must get back there soon. more

  • The Scene
The wooden bar, tables, chairs and lingering scent of cigarette smoke of Arthur's Tavern predate the Beats; walk in and you're immediately transported to a bygone era. The rectangular bar bordering the tiny back stage puts music lovers and the night's live entertainment side by side. Distinguished couples share space at the main bar with an eclectic array of music lovers, all hungry for the bar's stiff drinks and soothing tunes.

    The Draw
Strains of old-school blues, jazz and R&B fill the cozy seating area and offer a chance to catch unknown legends like "Sweet" Georgia Brown. The bartenders treat their job like an art, and though fancy martinis aren't on the menu, they'll gladly make one if you ask.
