BE AWARE DO NOT EAT HERE!!!! 3/15/2012

Attention Jewish customers from upper east side, west side and midtown. be very careful the owner originally from southern Italy by the name of Tony, (also the owner of Amarone Restaurant) is a anti semitic, racist, anti jew, with a bigotry behavior toward Jews! This man is a fake, incompetent, illiterate and doesn't even speak proper English with a heavy Italian southern accent. Tony the owner of Azalea restaurant is a pathetic Albanian lover, he hates his own people from Italy. Please did you realize that there aren't Italian employees? no Italian waiter, no Italian busboy, no Italian manager and NO Italian Chief? And there worst of all that the employees working at the restaurants are illegal alien with criminal record from Romania, Albania, Mexico and Equador! the kitchen staff is not even Iitalian and the food is prepared and cooked by illegal alien from mexico and the chef by the name of Alex is not even Italian but an immigrant from Mexico! ATTENTION: The labor department is investigating the owners of both restaurants, Azalea restaurant and Amarone for violating Federal and state Law by illegally confiscating all the wanters tips and refusing to pay all his employees! It is also investigated for violating labor law by underpaying his employees and not even meeting the minimum wage required by law. the food portions are extremely small, overpriced and it takes for ever to come out from the kitchen! do yourself a favor save your money and go eat somewhere else! The food sucks, very poor taste, old frozen fish, small portions and overpriced!! more

Better Italian restaurant than in Italy 10/12/2009

First of all managed by a great guy, Tony, from Lazio. It gurantees great quality, personal touch, great food and great atmosphere, you feel at home, well...actually you feel like you are in Italy, eating better than in Italy. Pros: Fresh and delicious food and great atmosphere Cons: Too many people getting to know the place more

My secret gem in hell's kitchen. 2/24/2009

I said it before, the best rating I could ever give a restaurant is the fact that I see Italian tourists frequent it. Because it's authentic. The Pomodoro sauce is wonderful, I just get it with rigatoni and it's fantastic. Fresh basil...well fresh everything. Now I'm in love with their Fusilli Norcia, which is a red sauce with sweet and hot italian sausage, I never get tired of it. I also recommend the Brodetto with Red Snapper. It's a great portion of red snapper with shrimp, mussels and clams. The Three Cheese Risotto is rich and wonderful, and has always been perfectly cooked. It's the perfect local place for foodies in the hood to sneak off to for a few drinks or great, simply prepared Italian food. And the delver! Tony, the manager is a great guy, friendly and interested in his customers. The service is fantastic. Very relaxed. more

Party of 6 women recommend 5/16/2008

There was good Italian food and the service was great. The hostess was friendly and personable, and the place was comfortable. I would definitely go again and the party of 6 women I was with all agree. I had the pasta primavera that was awesome, Thanks Tony for the great service. more

Perfection - at least for me! 3/2/2008

Fresh Pasta, nice sized portions, top notch service - and the ever present and smiling Tony (owner, host...etc) I?ve been eating here for years and I love it - and recommend it to everyone. Pros: Just the best all around Cons: Crowded - noisy more

Amazing Authentic Italian Food 3/21/2007

Amarone Ristorante is my favorite restaurant in New York City. Every time I go there it is a beautiful and great experience. I'm always greeted warmly and seated promptly according to my reservation. Amarone has delicious Italian food that tastes like it comes from an Italian grandmother's kitchen, but is presented artistically. Every dish is delicious, starting with an antipasti, pasta aldente, pesci, carni and pollo. Amarone has amazing wine list (the best I've ever seen). An of course you can't forget to order a homemade dessert. Tiramisu is the best in NYC, chocolate cake with hazelnut gelato is excellent. Pros: Amazing Food, Excellent service more

The freshest Italian food that perfectly compliments a great Amarone 8/16/2006

Though it is a great place for a pre-broadway meal, I suggest going after 8pm when the hectic rush to get customers out to the show is over. Ask for Toni. Request the fresh pasta with the porcini mushrooms and truffle sauce. Then select a great bottle of Amarone, for example Bertani 1998. The mozzarella di bufala from Italy is the freshest around. This will be the most relaxing and the best meal you've had all year. Then sit back, have an espresso, enjoy any of the great desserts (my favorite is the tartufo) and relax some more. The waiter comes over and enhances your experience with a good Riciotto dessert wine. Have a few. Stay there until 1:30 in the morning. The owner will sit down and enter you in an interesting conversation. This is truly la dolce vita. If this restaurant were right next to DaSilvano in the Village, the service and the food cannot be compared. No contest. Please go to Amarone as only a true Italian like myself who knows good food, good wine, and nice people can tell you. My fiance and her mom were wowed in my company. It truly is a diamond in the rough. Pros: best list of Amarone in NYC, freshest Italian food, great friendly service Cons: busy street on 9th avenue, go inside even near the open doors more

Great Food Good Value 1/1/2006

My wife and I had dinner at the Amarone Ristorante ( 686 9th Ave) while in NYC. The food and service were exceptional as was the price. Zagat rates this restaurant a 19 for food, 14 for décor and 19 for service. I would rate the food at least a 24 and serice a 25. I agree with the décor rating. Overall, a very good food and a very good value. more

Average place 10/29/2005

I found this place to be inviting and warm but service a tad pushy. The food is tasty but nothing you can't find at other good Italian restaurants. Had the riccatto fettucine and it was good, my friend had the sea bass special and he enjoyed it too.. we shared our dishes and both of us were not feeling well afterwards. Overall, I would recommend it if you are in the area. Pros: parking Cons: service more

Truly My Favorite 9/20/2005

Living in the area, I can't tell how many times I have been to this restaurant, but I can say that I have never been disappointed. The food is some of the best I've found in the city;always fresh and always prepared ""just like Mama used to make"". The wines are among the best I've ever had, especially the Amarones. Great place to take a break from the city and feel like your in a little restaurant in Italy. Pros: food, wine, ambiance Cons: having to leave more

amarone just ok 9/3/2005

Amarone was recommended to some friends and I after a show. We were pretty disappointed. We were seated pretty quickly, but thats prob. bec. the place was pretty empty. The owner welcomed us warmly kissing our hands, but the food was pretty average and the service was poor. Our waitress was nice enough when you could find her, but that was a challenge. I had the tilapia special which was mushy and boring and my three friends were also disappointed in their meals. Then they brought the check without asking if we would like dessert so we went for cheesecake elsewhere. Pros: seated quickly, warm welcome, friendly staff Cons: food mediocre, absent staff more

Just Bad Food 5/3/2005

Three friends and I stopped in just to grab a quick bite before a show. To sum it up, the food was bad and the service was bad. The bread was hard and stale. The sauce tasted like it was something that came out of a can. And the chicken dish one friend was dry and tasteless. And when we were ready to pay our bill, it took us 10 minutes just to find him and another 10 minutes just to bring us our change. And it wasnt like the place was crowed. Our waiter acted like he didnt even care about us. Pros: Not Crowded Cons: Taste, Service more

excellent? 3/4/2003

Amarone is an excellent restaurant. However, the dishes remain the same, even with the daily specials. If you visit New York City, you must visit Amarone. The wines are tastefull and rare. Many restaurants may follow Amarone as their example. Pros: wines, immediate seating, food Cons: smoking limited, sometimes crowded, smoking tables small more

One of the best restaurants. 1/14/2003

The best restaurant I've been to in New York. I would recommend it to all of New Yorkers. Pros: Inexpensive, Very good food, Good wine selection more

Amazing Pasta 12/18/2002

The pasta with truffle sauce is absolutely fantastic. The wine selection is quite decent and the service is very friendly. Very romantic!! Pros: prompt seating, fresh pasta, friendly more

A NICE EXPERIENCE ALL THE TIMES 11/18/2002

I HAVE EXPERIENCED AMARONE FEW TIMES, AND I THINK ITS GREAT!!! SERVICE IS ENJOYABLE AND FAST,THE OWNER IS WELL KNOWN TO BE A REAL GENTLEMAN TREATING HIS CUSTOMERS VERY WELL!! I AM SORRY FOR THE PEOPLE HAD EXPERIENCE SOMETHING DIFFERENT, BUT THEY SHOULD GIVE A TRY AGAIN, MAYBE CALLING THE OWNER BEFORE TO ANNOUNCE THEIR RESERVATION.SOMETIMES I BELIEVE GET REALLY BUSY,AND THAT SHOWS ITS A GOOD PLACE TO BE TO EAT!!!! Pros: FOOD, SERVICE, OWNER more

Does not reflect Italian food 10/29/2002

The seating was done immediately, this place is extremely tiny not intimate do not recommend taking children. The waiter kept us waiting forever, the pasta arrived raw not aldente RAW. The waiter was the least bit concerned. Upon leaving the restaurant we ran into the owner so we proceeded to explain our experience at his restaurant he was not the least bit concerned. I DO NOT recommend this restaurant and it certainly does not have good Italian food. Pros: Quick seating Cons: Unpleasant servers, Unpleasant owner, Poor food quality more

Fantastic 8/6/2002

Was very impressed with everything from the moment we got there until our meal was complete. The food overall was incredible! The Calamari appetizer was the best I ever had. The Chicken Amarone, Salmon Barolo, and Cornich Hen were also hits at the table. They sat us promptly and we were out in plenty of time before the show. This place is a great stop before a show AND even when you don't have one!! more

Never Disappointed 7/25/2002

Eaten here several times before and after the theater. Great Italian food, delicious salads, excellent pastas, good veal dishes as well. Save room for Italian cheese cake--the best! Very friendly and helpful staff and really do not need a reservation. Pros: good food, reasonably priced, lots of choices Cons: slightly crowded more

Good and affordable 6/21/2002

Have dined here at least 5 times, each time I leave completely satisfied. I would call the ambiance ""upscale casual."" The service is professional, the food is very fresh, and the prices are reasonable. Make a reservation if you plan to during the theater rush. Pros: Fresh food, reasonably priced, good service Cons: long wait w/o rez more
