(SF) Go ahead, you can touch 7/19/2006

If you ever want to see what it is like to be like Helen Keller, put on earplugs and descend into the darkness of the Tactile Dome. But, make sure you call a day ahead and schedule an appointment first. This place is for all ages, even 3 year olds enjoy playing with the hands-on experiments. They just don't know they are learning. Free admission via reciprocal membership through ASTC. There is a toddler area so that they are not completely left out. Allot a day for this activity. They are located in the Marina district and close at 5pm. ( http://www.exploratorium.edu ) more

The Lawrence Hall of Science of the West Bay 6/22/2006

Both of these science centers use activities and creative exhibits to explain science to kids in a fun way. I think the Exploratorium is the more successful - it tends to have more exhibits geared to teaching young children instead of just being fun for them to play with. It is larger, or at least seems that way, and in my dim childhood recollections has more demonstrations of the exhibits, where the Lawrence Hall of Science tends to rely on written information that kids are often not interested in perusing. more

Tactile Dome! 6/3/2006

Have any of the weeklies ever designated the Feel-a-tron the best place to make out in SF? Oh, I know it's not really called the Feel-a-tron… the official name isTactile Dome, but I kind of like Feel-a-tron, don't you? Anyways, if you and a sweetie want to have a little fun, descend into the darkness of the dome and feel around, so to speak… just make sure you stay close and don't mix up a loved one with a school field trip. more

There are not many museums around that allow you to actually play around with all of the exhibits. The exploratorium is one ofthose museums. It make children have fun while learning. The museum is science based but more geared towards physics. My neice hated physics in school, but after visiting teh museum a few times, she leraned to understand concepts and now she relates everything she learns to the exploratorium. Its a wonderful educational experince in which you have a great time. more

Science Explains it all 9/4/2005

Here at the Exploratorium you'll find the answers of all the things you've wondered about life. Well almost everything. They have so many sections of scientific discoveries and natural physics explained in plain English for kids and adults to comprehend without reading a sentence twice. Although this is one of the biggest attractions here in San Fransciso its one of the busisest places during school session. Field trips for students are never ending here, so you want to schedule a good day to visit. Parking is always available and the Palace of Fine Arts is right next door. If you walk acorss the street and you have the Marina, so its a good bet to check this place out. more

For Kids 1 to 99 8/17/2005

While nobody may realize it at the time, everything at the Exploratorium teaches you something. Areas teach about electricity, magnetism, sights, sounds, and more. The Exploratorium is not a typical museum and in fact it may be more entertaining and more educational. A must see in San Francisco for any kid, or just the kid in you. more

Exploratorium 8/15/2005

The Exploratorium is such a beautiful place to see and explore. The grounds itself is beautiful although I don't much like the wire fence they have now put around the pond. There are always ducks swimming there. The Exploratorium itself is a really neat place. They have an admission fee but is well worth the price. Inside are really neat sciense exhibits. It is just a fun place to explore. more

A Great Introduction into the Fascinating World of Science 8/14/2005

The Exploratorium was one of many museums I frequently visited as a kid, and basically was a wonderful first exposure to the world of science and exploration. I particularly enjoy the optical illusion exhibit, in which a room appearing through its outside window as a flat, level enclosed space in reality has a slanted floor and ceiling. The earthquake exhibit is also noteworthy, as it provides detail on what causes earthquakes and the history behind the two major California quakes. There are also exhibits explaining the science behind each of the five senses. All in all, as fun and as educational an experience then as it is today. more

science and learning 8/12/2005

The Exploratorium is a science museum that both kids and adults will enjoy. Outside, surrounded by Golden Gate Park, the museum is idyllic and tranquil. Inside, there are over 600 displays, ranging from an exhibit on optical illusions to a giant tube that carries sound. The displays are interactive, so kids learn about science while they have fun. more

A place for fun and learning 8/12/2005

I used to come here all the time as a kid, there are so many things to do there that a family wouldn't have any trouble spending a day here. Some of my favorite exhibits included the room where a bright light flashed and made a negative of your image on the walls, and also the wall of blunt-edged pins that allowed you to press your hand to it, creating a lasting impression in the shape of the pins. For parents it's a great place to let their kids run around and have fun, while not realizing that they're actually learning about science in the process. more

Cool Stuff 8/9/2005

At the Exploratorium, there are many things to do that quiet amazing and cool. This is a great place to have fun and bring the kids. There are a lot of unique experiments and exhibits to look at. Sometimes it gets too crowded when schools have their field trips there. more

Exploratorium 8/9/2005

The Exploratorim is a wonderful place to go with the family. My kids, my husban and I enjoy browsing all the different exhibits. Almost the exhibits they have are interactive in that you can touch and try them. We like to take our out of town family here as part of their San Francisco area tour. The grounds are beautiful and we have seen many people having their wedding pictures taken here. The Exploratorium itself has an admission fee and free, unmetered parking is available on the street. more

Great Maze!!! 8/7/2005

If you're in the Bay Area and you're looking for some good scenery for an outdoor wedding photo shoot. This is definitely the place you want to go to. I've had many relatives organize their wedding photo shoots here at the Palace of Fine Arts. If youre at the Exploritorium, you have to do the Tactile Dome there! It's this long maze with absolutely no light source in the entire maze. You have to feel your way through this entire maze/labrynth. It's supposed to take about an hour to an hour and a half. My friend got scared half way through and there are attendants that are able to guide you back safely in case you panic. Definitely a great tourist attraction! more

Great for Kids and adults 8/7/2005

The Exploratorium is an amazing place to visit. Even if you're not the typed that loves science. The Exploratorium has tons and tons of hands on exibits that will keep you entertained for hours at a time. Its easy to loose yourself in the joy of some of these "children's" exibits. more
