During the holidays, I often send friends and relatives a little bit something from the Northwest. Made in Washington ( http://www.madeinwashington.com ) carries my favorites: smoked salmon encased in wooden boxes, Seattle chocolates, Brown & Haley’s Aplets & Cotlets and Glass Eye Studios’ Blown Glass Ornaments. To make it even easier, Made in Washington sells gift boxes for shipping. They have a coupon in the Entertainment Book – Seattle area book.

I often buy Seattle Chocolates ( http://www.seattlechocolate.com ) as a present for a hostess or when visiting out-of-town relatives. The boxes are pretty and presentable and the prices come in $5/$15/$25 price range. The chocolate is very rich and indulgent, as chocolate should be. They are sold in local grocery stores, Seatac airport and Best of Washington. When purchasing from Best of Washington, check the Entertainment Book.

If you want great prices, Walmart ( http://www.walmart.com ) is the place to go. We live by a 24 hour Walmart which is suppose to be convenient. They have a wonderful return policy, but I don’t really like to go there. Especially during the holidays, the aisles are always fully lined with pallets of merchandise. The main aisles become single file where you can only go one direction. I feel like a rat in a maze. It is difficult and frustrating to navigate through the store.

The staff is very knowledgeable about their product and will spend the time educating you so you can select the special diamond. Afterwords you can return to the store for free diamond cleaning and setting checks.

I can't go wrong when I give the people whom I love, who loves music, an Apple iTunes gift card ( http://www.apple.com/ ). The denominations run as low as $20/$25 and can be purchased at an Apple store. Visit their site for one nearest you. I liked this option because it eliminates the guesswork - I didn't have to keep track of their favorite music, if they already have it or whatnot. Give them exactly what they like, when they want it.

If you have small children of varying age and live in Seattle, the Children's Museum ( http://www.thechildrensmuseum.org ) is a good place for a membership. One adult and one child costs $15, and a year membership is as low as $40. So, go three times and you break even.
If it is raining outside, we often go here so the kids can get exercise. There is plenty of space to run around and it's a good place for a play date.
Our favorites include:
1) The art studio where the kids can do arts and crafts. Each time we go, there is a different project to make. I'm not sure if it's the parents that like it more or the kids. We like to paint here!!!
2) About two times a year, there is a new traveling exhibit. Clifford is the current exhibit.
3) Discovery Bay: for Kids 3 and under, the water table is a popular destination. But it takes second billing to feeding the fish.

Woodland Park Zoo ( http://www.zoo.org ) is a great zoo to have a yearly membership. We have enjoyed the zoo membership throughout the year. A common misconception is not going during the winters. On the contrary, we enjoy inclement weather- well, overcast or light rain, we are guaranteed that it won't be crowded. One perk of having a membership is that we can focus on one area at a time. In doing so, we never get bored of the zoo, there is always something new and fascinating to see. We enjoy the Zoomazium (indoors), the Birds of Prey exhibit, Willabong station (feed the birds), Butterfly exhibit (summers) and the petting farm.

In the heart of main street (Cole Street) Enumclaw is a little bookstore called Lindon Bookstore ( http://www.lindonbookstore.com/NASApp/store/IndexJsp ). Expect a quaint little bookstore with an inviting aroma of espresso, friendly staff and an assortment of books and novelty gifts. They have a small lounge in the back where you can sit and relax to check out books you might want to buy. They have toys for the kids to play while you shop in peace. They also have an espresso cart in the front for a little cup o' latte, if you so wish. If you are hunting for a gift, stop by here, you're sure to find a new (or used) book or novelty item, for someone special.

Uptown Lancaster is a nice neighborhood in downtown Lancaster. Amongst the row of antique and vintage clothing shops is Rachel's Cafe. The crepes offered are so mouth watering that I had to try two kinds! The decor is casual Parissiene. Very hip creperie. Rachel's is well worth a meal with a pal. The prices were very reasonable.

There's nothing better at bonding the intergeneration than riding a restored historic steam train. The 45 minute train ride is just right for the grandkids, plus its a great activity that the grandparents can participate in despite the summer heat! View the pastoral countryside and Amish farms. Coach was economical, toddlers - 3 yrs and under ride free. At the platform you can visit a toy store carrying Thomas the Tank Engine paraphernalia and our kids loved the cranky car ride.
