I started going to Jim's Coffee Shop because I heard a lot of great things about it. I have been going there quite a few times ever since. Not only does this restaurant serve large, generously sized breakfast plates, but their waiters and waitresses are the nicest people, always greeting their customers with warm smiles and providing speedy service. I would recommend that on weekends, get there early to beat the crowd, since the line usually gets pretty long at around 10-11 am.

I went to Pegasus & Pendragon Books & Music, which is a local bookstore that has two other locations in the East Bay. This bookstore is much like Barnes & Noble and Borders in that it's great if you're not looking for something specific and old (say something published more than 15 years ago and isn't a bestseller). Otherwise, the prices are hard to beat. You can purchase a number of bestselling books at a fraction (around 1/3) of the cover price.

Famous Haircuts is a hair salon I tried a couple times recently. On both occasions, I didn't have to wait too long, even without an appointment. I think that this place does a good job with simple men's hairstyles, like short cropped hair, which I got during those visits. I personally prefer the other place (Hair #1), but it's probably only because I've been there many times already and the lady is used to cutting the type of style I want.

Dynamite Cheese Steak is a small sandwich shop that makes the most awesome cheese steak sandwiches. Sure, I don't eat cheese steak sandwiches often, but I can't imagine them tasting better than the ones made here. I would recommend the steak and cheese with bell peppers sandwich (I think that's what it's called). Just add a touch of Tabasco and you've got yourself a truly dynamite sandwich. Check this place out if you're in the area.

I take my car to George Oren Tire Specialist for servicing of my car brakes and for tire repair. The prices of their services are, as expected, much cheaper than at car dealerships service centers, and you can count on them to do a great job and be honest about what your car needs and what it doesn't need. That's all you could ask for at an auto service shop.

I sometimes go to Crazy Charlie's Fuel and Propane to to get gas because it's quite possibly the cheapest place to get gas anywhere in the Bay Area. Even as gas prices continue to shoot up there to the $2.60's and $2.70, here at Crazy Charlie's you can fill up for a mere $2.29 (unleaded), if you don't mind putting brandless mystery gas into your car.

My dad called Associated Engineering when there was underground pipe leakage at our house. They quickly found the location of the leakage-- beneath our washer and dryer-- and jackhammered through the the floor of our garage to seal the leaky pipes. They completed the job in only 6 hours, and charged a reasonable price for it. I would give this service my stamp of approval.

My brother and I went to Suzann Photography once to have passport photos taken of us (my dad thought that professional photographers would do a much better job and actually make you look good in your passport photo). When we got there, we waited around 40 minutes for the photographer to arrive (the front desk lady said it would be a short wait) and when we finally got our pictures taken, they weren't even the least bit apologetic. Also, the pictures turned out no better than if we had taken them at Walgreens.

Alameda Sports Cards & Comics, located in downtown Alameda, is a great place to find your favorite comic books, action figures, and sports and comics trading cards at super prices. You can thumb through their impressive comic book, which are neatly separated by tabs (sort of like at a record store with the individual artist tabs). If you're looking for bargains, make sure to go there on Saturdays from noon to 4 pm when the store holds a Clearance Center event, where you can buy all kinds of drastically marked-down items like comic books, figures, cards, etc (all sales are final for these items though).

Fairyland is the place where a kid's favorite literary characters come to life, like the Three Little Pigs and Alice in Wonderland. All kinds of events happen there throughout the year, like puppet shows, storytime, children's theater, and more. The rides are mostly in the form of merry-go-rounds, a ferris wheel, a trolly, boat rides, etc. I went there often as a kid and had a blast there.
