I wanted to sit at the bar with an old friend and just enjoy a glass of wine. But the bartender girl was absolutely rude and not attentive. I had to ask for a menu a few times ...

Hidden Gem 4/5/2010

If you are on the fence about going, let this be your reason to go - $25 3-course dinner.\r \r Let this be your second reason. Food, delicisss or is it delicsss. Well we all understand yum.\r \r Now if you go, you HAVE to get the Croustillant ?de? Chêvre?et? de ?Poire? for an appetizer. This is a MUST. I repeat a must. Trust me, even though you don't know me - TRUST ME.\r \r For dinner I had Raie ?à ?la? Grenobloise?. Skate fish isn't for anyone, although I don't know why. It's a white, meaty fish. I cleaned the plate. Clearly Skate fish is for me.\r \r Typically I am not a dessert person, but since it was included in my 3-course meal, I blindly chose the Flourless? Chocolate? Cake that came with vanilla ice cream and some raspberry sauce drizzled on the side. I just wanted it to never end.\r \r As for the wine, I really enjoyed the Muscadet?. I enjoyed it so much my friend had to get her own bottle...and drive.\r \r The place is small, cute, low key. A smidge off the beaten path, but well worth the trip.\r \r Bon appétit.\r \r Pros: Great prices, delicious food, outdoor dining, huge wine list Cons: One bathroom more

Bacchus Rules! 2/10/2009

The great atmosphere, fun waitresses, and knowledgeable owner make this place a keeper. It's very relaxed and the staff always seems to be in a good mood. The food is delicious classic bistro fare (love the escargots and foie gras...everything that's good for you!), but if you like something a bit more unusual, the duck spring rolls, chicken roll stuffed with shiitakes, and Cajun-spiced tuna are all excellent. As for the wine...that alone is worth the trip. They don't fool around at Bacchus. It's all French regional wines, some organic, at different price points, i.e., there's a wine for everyone here. AND if you're not into wine, try the beer on tap. Pros: great all around, this place is a lot of fun, and totally unpretentious more

sooo pleasant 2/9/2009

The food is consistently nice...and I've tried 3 or 4 dishes here. The atmosphere is pleasant. The people are so friendly. The prices are very reasonable. That about sums it up. Go! The dishes I've tried have all had something special about them...a bit of sophistication even though this is basically French peasant food. (I love French peasant food, and Bacchus is a great place to satisfy when I have that craving.) more

I simply love this place! 2/9/2009

This is the kind of place where you can really relax with great wine and equally great food whether you go for the classics like hanger steak and fries, or escargots, or something a little more unusual such as the pear and goat cheese in puff pastry, for example. It's unpretentious with a super friendly staff. I feel comfortable here whether I'm alone sitting at the bar, or at a table with friends. I often order wine by the glass because I like to try a different one for each of the appetizers I order. Definitely check out their remarkable French wine list. more

A romantic but unpretentious place 12/29/2008

My bf and I went there last Friday for a casual dinner, and it turned out that there was nothing casual about it, in a good way! The place was dimly lit and cozy. It was also very quiet when we were there even though there were about 4 other occupied tables. I ordered from the $25 prix-fixe menu and it was very worth it. I started off with escargots, lamb shank as entree and warm chocolate cake with vanilla ice-cream rolled in nuts as dessert. Everything was excellent, except maybe the side of mash potatoes which was a little watery. My bf ordered the onion soup, which was the BEST that I've ever tasted. He got the salmon linguini with a side of butternut squash-potato gratin for entree. The gratin was perfect, creamy inside but crunchy on top and bottom. We left with satisfied stomaches without a big hole in the wallet. And did I say that the waitress was very nice and friendly?! Pros: Easy to find parking, romantic more

A welcome surprise 12/5/2008

i took my partner out for his birthday Tues night at Bacchus. he wanted Italian but I persuaded him to come here as I'd heard some good things. It ended up being a fantastic night. Everything was great. First there was a really cool band, and the waitress (a lovely french girl) took care of us, explaining everything in detail and making two delicious recommendations. My partner had beef Bourguignon, and I had the salmon papilotte. She also helped us select some good wine. My partner said it was the best meal he'd had for years and I agree. Anyone looking for great food, great ambience and kind and attentive wait staff should go to Bacchus. more

Fun, Friendly, and Delicious! 12/4/2008

This place is hip. My friends and I had great food and wine, and we danced! The live band played Afro-Latin music. This is a new feature and it definitely adds a lot of fun to the evening. Friendly service, and enough of it to go around even on a busy night. I'd recommend this place to anyone. Did I mention great food and wine? My friends and I had a tasting: mussels in wine with crispy fries, escargots, pear and goat cheese in puff pastry, and the braised lamb. The chocolate mousse is silky smooth and the caramelized chunky apple tart Tatin melts in your mouth. We had a Loire wine that was really good too. YUM! Just go...go now! Pros: food, wine, ambience, music, service more

wonderful food and service 11/20/2008

Wonderful food and service. Service was top notch, the staff is warm and friendly without being stuffy and every plate was like a work of art. I've only been here once but i'd come here again.I would to recommend to anyone. Pros: food, service more

Who needs the attitude? 11/9/2008

We had brunch at Baccus. The food was acceptable, but the rest of the experience was not. The service was mixed and at times bordering on hostile. A party of six, one lunch plate came five minutes after the rest and we had to ask for a side dish a total of three times before it arrived. Could the loud music with a blasting base have been the cause? I think it snapped my pateince. We had to ask for it to be turned down twice. And for a party of six a 26% percent service charge was added to our bill. With all the wonderful places one could enjoy a leisurely meal in Brooklyn, who needs treatment like that? I say, ""Jamais plus!"" Pros: Average food Cons: Loud banging music, poor service, several items on the menu were not available, 26% service fee for a party of six, more

Great Wine... 9/26/2008

Love this place! Great wine & amazing food...quality of every ingredient, can't beat it.\r \r Seriously, it's the small spot, you're not sure you want to tell everyone about because you don't want to have to share it. It's that good more

Better than the rest 9/9/2008

If you remember Boerum Hilll and the Smith Street explosion of nearly 10 years ago, you'll no doubt remember that there was a wave of some pretty good French restaurants, that, alas, have either gone by the wayside or have become part mediocre maddening crowd. Bacchus on the other hand has seemed to ripen with age. I remember trying the place a few years ago and thought that they were pretty good, but imagined it going the way of most of the other Bistro's in the neighborhood-- I have been pleasantly surprised to find that this is not true. I now dine there regularly and tried take out for the first time last night. Both dishes ordered were prepared to perfection -- a perfect medium rare on my duck, a perfect medium on my girlfriend's burger. A glass of Pinot Noir at the wine bar while I waited for the order, and what could be more perfect? Maybe only dining on the outside patio. I'll recommend the shrimp and risotto app, the scallops app, the duck salad (the foie gras option is nice) or the snails if you're feeling traditional. For entrees I like the duck breast or the pork loin, my girlfriend would recommend the salmon and tell you they have THE best burger in the neighborhood. The service is quite competent and always friendly. more

Can't Handle Large Groups 7/23/2008

I made reservations a week or two in advance for a good friend's birthday. It was for 7 or 8 people and we all showed up 15 minutes in advance. 45 minutes later and we still hadn't been seated and the host was not in the least bit apologetic. As the place is small, we watched as the waiters leisurely waited on the customers occupying the table we had reserved, while we left to awkwardly squeeze in around the bar. Then, once we were seated, (an hour after our reservation time) we had two or three different people waiting on us, which isn't unusual for a large party, except that we could barely get any of them to come over and serve us. Throughout the night, the staff just seemed indifferent to annoyed about us being there. Totally unprofessional. It was a pity, because the food was good and not too expensive, but the experience left such a bad taste in my mouth that I'd never go back. more

A Lovely Favorite 10/21/2007

What makes this a gem is its every day simplicity. Service is so friendly and consistent, as is the food. Wednesday 2 for 1 entrees is an absolute steal! The wait staff is always friendly and offers great wine suggestions. This is our neighborhood standby. Pros: good wine, solid food, outdoor garden, family friendly, great value, comfortable and relaxed Cons: cash only (just my opinion) more

Bistro food, inconsistent service 7/19/2007

I really like Bacchus for what it is, namely a bistro. It's meant for sitting outside and lazily eating some bistro style food. Granted, the menu is a little ambitious in some respects, but if you stick to the basics you won't be disappointed. Don't go here for a quick bite - the service can inconsistent. But if you want to hang out with a nice glass of wine or a good beer and some steak frites in a pleasant garden, I highly recommend. Pros: great place for a simple, relaxing meal Cons: service can be slow more

Worst service I have ever encountered 5/26/2007

I am sure the food is delicious, but I never got the opportunity to taste it. My wife and I -- after finding our reservation was not recorded, and being sort of sneered at for having the temerity to ask for a garden table, as we had reserved -- waited, first for water, then for bread, then for someone to take our order....and then a full hour for our appetizers (a green salad and a brochette with vegetables) to be served. After being told repeatedly the appetizers would arrive in ""two minutes,"" while we grew increasingly agitated and starving, we decided to leave and take our chances elsewhere. Who knew how long it would be, or how long for our steaks to arrive after that? \r \r We found respite at Bedouin Tent next door, where the service was prompt and friendly and the food (as always) was totally delicious.\r more

Delightful 3/27/2007

It truly is. I go here regularly enough to know the staff. The steak is never overcooked - always tender and delicious. The 1/2 chicken is always moist and delightful. I always order an extra side of fries because they're PERFECT! The salad starters are all good, though if you love goat cheese - those are incredible! The snails in garlic sauce - try them. I hate snails yet love this dish. Oh, and brunch is always fun. Service could be a bit slow when it's busy, but the wine and the bread will keep you occupied if your dinner parther isn't keeping you entertained ;o) more

Everyday sophistication. 1/25/2007

My boyfriend and I passed this place by at least 50 times before we finally ate there- now we eat there once a week! The dinners are great, but I want to speak to the brunch. They have a real brunch menu with lots of offerings, a lovely lemony hollandaise, and rich coffee. I am always picky about potatoes, and the Bacchus potatoes define what I look for- soft and moist, stuck together with a pile of creamy caramelized onions. The rich egg dishes are rounded out by a lovely green salad. Despite the small size they don't rush you out, it seems like they'll serve you coffee all day if you let them.\r \r Bacchus is overwhelmingly charming and warm in a very neighborhood kind of way, after I was there only twice the manager (or owner or ""the waiter who's always there"") recognized us and greeted my boyfriend and I with a cheerful ""welcome back"" wave. more

2 for 1 wednesday 11/8/2006

Last wednesday i went to bacchus on atlantic av.I hadn't been there in a while and talking to my friend i remembered that they use to do a 2 for 1 entrees on wednesday. So i called to find out and they did tell me that they were still doing it. So i went there with my friend and we had a great time, the food was really good i had a beef stew (perfect winter dish) and my friend had the hanger steak. The ambiance and the service was friendly and casual. Because we knew the bill was gonna be half of what it was supposed to be, the waiter helped us to pick a very nice bottle wine on a very impressive wine list.\r Bacchus is a very nice french bistro with friendly people, i'll go back there very soon...\r john more

Excellent French Bistro. 11/7/2006

I have been enjoying the great food and wines at Bacchus since my move from Manhattan to Brooklyn earlier this year. This great gem of a restaurant has been one of the unexpected joys of my new hood. Not only has the food been uniformly excellent but the warm welcome and friendly atmosphere has assured me that Brooklyn can equal or better anything that Manhattan can offer. Every New Yorker should enjoy at least one great meal there. more

Go next door to Bedouin Tent... 2/16/2006

After waiting twenty minutes, we were finally seated, another ten minutes passed until a waiter approached us. A waiter rushed us through the specials and brought us the bottle of wine we ordered. Bacchus ran out of breadbaskets and bread! They brought us a tiny plate with toasted wonder bread and one slice of french bread. The foie gras was not fresh... the oysters... also not so fresh. Medium rare filet at Bacchus translates to tough red meat almost well done. The leg of lamb was fair but, like the filet, was served luke warm. The desserts were fine, nothing special- warm chocolate cake and a caramel meringue. We had full wine glasses and the manager asked us to get up and move to a table at the bar so they could seat a larger party in the space we occupied. Poor, inattentive yet rushed service... combined with substandard food. Pros: Wine list Cons: Service, Food more
