This is the island's top-of-the-line restaurant. The cuisine has always been excellent, but had sagged a bit until the new chef, the redoubtable Kim Bast, took over. The setting (inside and out) overlooks Fishermans Bay --- and on late summer and fall evenings, a sunset to rival the South Pacific
You can eat "light" -- e.g., gorgeous mussels in a garlic and saffron broth, or go big with such goodies as Lopez rack of lamb, local salmon and halibut. Each comes with a great bowl of soup and a local-greens salad, with bread from Holly B's locally famous bakery. Bruce Botts is the unofficial sommelier, and he has picked some toothsome wines, particularly from the Pacific Northwest. You won't have room, but don't skip dessert -- good local fruit and berries, plus Lopez Island Creamery ice cream' It's butterfat may stop your heart, but it's wonderful way to risk it.

From early May until mid-October, the Lopez Saturday Market spreads its incredible wares and goodies between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., just across from Vita's Deli (to which you can repair for a lunch treat; Joyce Brinar's food is better than any restaurant on the island -- and there are some good ones, e.g., Love Dog, the Bay Cafe).
There is an extraodinary produce/frozen lamb, pork and beef stand, Horse Drawn Farms -- featured in Seattle restaurants such as the Dahlia Lounge. There are incredible tacos/burritos/quesadillas, redolent of garlic and love. Don't miss Linda Adams' amazing pickles and jams. And you'll chat with half of Lopez's "nonestablishment" as you stroll the market.
There's nothing quite like it elsewhere in Puget Sound.

Lux surprised us with its high quality -- previous restaurants in the Wallingford Center have not been impressive. The calimari were pounded, pankoed, and delicious. I had a lovely roast chicken and mashers with pancetta gravy, my wife a nice flaky hailibut dusted with ground nuts. The wine list is short but good -- we had a Wolf Blass shiraz (2002) which was delicious. This is not a top-of-the-line place, but the remodel is bright and open, the wait staff young but experienced and effective, and we had a lovely experience.

Serafina does a trifecta -- great Italian food, fantastic service, and funky charm. Try the salsicce con peperonati e polenta. The wine last has a good selection on Italian and Pacific Northwest wine. On a warm summer evening, ask to be seated in the patio and be transported to Tuscany. Service is professional and knowledgeable. One entree in our group was overdone -- and promptly replaced. A memorable dessert was the rhubarb zabiglione. We emerged beautifully fed and in high spirits.

Joyce Brinar, formerly chef at the upscale Bay Cafe, provides an extraordinary array of hot and cold edibles. The food is imaginative, generous, and usually made with local ingredients. Her wine stock is first rate. Also, it's a favorite island gathering place, and a wonderful source for, say, a gooey barbequed pork sandwich to carry across the street to stroll through Lopez's summer Saturday Market.

The Love Dog is a Lopez Village institution - owner White Bear is an imaginative and risk-taking chef, sometimes hitting the mark, sometimes missing, but always doing her best. It's a lovely space, with a pleasant outdoor patio area for nicer days (it's also a great spot to watch the 4th of July parade). Give it a try!
