If you love hole-in-the wall local businesses and great graphic design, Desteenation has a shirt (or a hundred) for you. They go to the local bars, stores and restaurants they love (mostly in Seattle, Califormia and Hawaii so far) and license their logos or other artwork so they can turn them into unique, high-quality t-shirts. I drop into their Fremont store regularly to see what new designs they have in stock, and have sent more than a dozen of their t-shirts for great Seattle businesses like Sonic Boom records, the Tractor Tavern and Hattie's Hat to homesick friends who have moved away. (If you're worried about how they local businesses make out, they get a cut of all sales, in addition to some great free publicity).

Cheap is relative, but my sister is coming for a month with her whole family and just worked out a month's rental of a big car (minivan or SUV, I forget) for around $600. Enterprise actually focuses on local & long-term renters more than business travelers, and has better pricing and deals for those kinds of customers.

If your kitchen knives are getting dull, drop in to this little storefront (at the north end of the market, on the uphill side of the street, a few doors north of the original Starbucks). Not only do they sell lots of great high-end knives, they also offer a sharpening service.

Los Angeles offers a world-class selection of attractions for the weekend visitor, from the Santa Monica boardwalk and 3rd St. Promenade in the far west to the Disney Concert Hall downtown, with the Getty Center, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and several major movie studios in between. Unfortunately, given their broad dispersion from east to west, no single hotel location offers easy access to all these destinations.
If you're looking for a top-flight hotel that minimizes your drive time while offering the richest possible set of activites right out your door, I highly recommend the Mondrian in West Hollywood. Located right on Sunset, the Mondrian is a destination in itself - the rooftop Skybar is one of the hottest watering holes in LA - and offers a central point from which to venture both east and west. In addition, the Sunset Strip and West Hollywood in general offer some of the most interesting street life in all of LA, with hundreds of great stores, coffee shops, music venues and bars all clustered within a few square miles.

After some very disappointing experiences at lower-quality chain stores (e.g., Museum Quality Framing), I tried this single-location storefront in Fremont and have been a loyal customer ever since.
Pros: Great quality and variety of frame stock, mat and glass options; knowledgeable and helpful staff (i.e., people with a well-developed aesthetic sense who aren't afraid to have an opinion); reasonable prices; decent turnaround times; great customer service.
Cons: somewhat more expensive than the typical chain store.
As other reviewers have noted, this is also a fun store to visit and browse for gifts, cards and home decor, so it's worth having on your list even if you don't have a framing project.

I'm a native Seattleite, but four years on the east coast were enough to convince me that east coast pizza (thin, chewy crust, simple but high-quality toppings, cooked in wood- or coal-fired brick ovens) was massively superior to the Chicago or west coast styles more common around here.
Naturally, I was pleased when Tutta Bella opened, first in Columbia City and then in my own Wallingford neighborhood. But as good as Tutta Bella is (and it's *really* good), it still didn't live up to my fond memories of Brooklyn or New Haven pies. So when I had my first slice of pizza from a mobile pizza oven at the Fremont Sunday Market, I almost cried it was so good.
Here's the crazy thing about these guys: Veraci pizza has no fixed address. They make hands-down the best pizza in town in a trailer-mounted, wood-fired brick and clay oven that they drive from market to market. (They also do private parties and catering, and I'm practically ready to throw a big party just so I can have more of their pizza).
I can't really put my finger on why it's so darn good - maybe the crust is a little chewier, or the sauce has a little more oregano bite, or the edges are burned just a little like they are at Frank Pepe's Pizzeria in New Haven. But whatever it is, they do it better than anyone else in town. I don't know where they hang out in the rainy season, but if I were you I'd call them right now to find out - it's that good!
